Journal compilation © 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Objective: Older individuals with bipolar disorder may exhibit greater cognitive decline over time compared to mentally healthy elderly individuals. We aimed to investigate neurocognitive performance in bipolar disorder over a period of two years. Methods: A comprehensive neuropsychological test battery was applied at baseline and two years later to 65 euthymic elderly outpatients with bipolar disorder (mean age = 68.35, range: 60–90 years) and to a demographically comparable sample of 42 healthy elderly controls. A general linear model was used to measure changes over time for the two groups. The impact of baseline illness characteristics on intra‐individual change in neurocognitive performance within the bipolar group was studied by using logistic regression analysis. Results: At baseline and at follow up, bipolar disorder patients performed worse on all neurocognitive measures compared to the healthy elderly group. However, there was no significant group‐by‐time interaction between the bipolar disorder patients and the comparison group. Conclusions: Although older bipolar disorder patients have worse cognitive function than normal controls, they did not have greater cognitive decline over a period of two years. 相似文献

A polyclonal antibody-based, group-specific, competitive ELISA (C-ELISA) for the detection of antibodies to equine encephalosis virus (EEV) was developed. The assay measures the competition between a specific guinea pig antiserum and a test serum, for a pre-titrated EEV antigen. The C-ELISA detected antibodies to the seven known EEV serotypes. Reference antisera raised against other arboviruses did not cross react with EEV antigen. Negative sera from horses in the United Kingdom were used to establish the baseline for a negative population. Negative and positive populations of South African horses, selected on the basis of virus neutralisation were assayed subsequently. Optimal test parameters, where sensitivity?specificity?100%, were calculated by two-graph receiver operator characteristic (TG-ROC) analysis to be at a cut-off value of 29.5% inhibition. Results show the EEV C-ELISA described to be sensitive, specific and reliable. Used in conjunction with ELISAs available for African horse sickness virus (AHSV), differential serological diagnosis between EEV and AHSV can be achieved. 相似文献

Expression of GABA(B) receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) in the central nervous system was compared between the spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed all the isoforms except B1e in cortex, hypothalamus, and medulla oblongata. In the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and ventrolateral medulla (VLM), the B1a-c and 1 g isoforms were present as well as B2. Real-time PCR detected significantly higher levels of B1a (p < 0.01) and B2 (p < 0.05) mRNA in the NTS of SHR compared to WKY. A significant increase in B1a expression (p < 0.05) was detected in VLM. Immunolabeling suggested presynaptic and postsynaptic expression of B1a, B1b, and B2 subtypes throughout the NTS, with significant differences in distribution patterns and labeling between subtypes and between SHR and WKY. These findings suggest that GABA(B) receptors expressed by neurones in NTS may be involved in cardiovascular regulation and that changes in GABA(B) mRNA expression levels may contribute to the hypertensive state in SHR. 相似文献
