Adolescents who were psychiatrically hospitalized ( N = 105) were classified as sexually abused, physically abused, both sexually and physically abused, or not abused, and studied to determine the prevalence of suicidal behavior and psychiatric disorders. Self-reports of hopelessness, depression, coping, and self-concept were also examined. No difference in suicidal behavior or psychiatric disorder, based on abuse history, was found, with one exception. Adolescents who were sexually abused, particularly those who experienced the most severe sexual abuse, used negative coping strategies more often than those not sexually abused. Findings suggest that symptomatology of adolescents who are psychiatrically hospitalized does not differ markedly based on history of abuse.  相似文献

Summary: Purpose: Epileptic posttraumatic seizures (PTSs) are a well-recognized consequence of head injury (HI), but HI and nonepileptic seizures (NESs) have not been related. We describe a significant subset of patients with NESs who had their seizures attributed to HI.
Methods: We reviewed the records of all patients diagnosed with NES at the University of Maryland Medical Center over a 6-year period (1989–1995) and selected patients with seizures attributed to a head injury occurring ≥3 years before the onset of their seizures.
Results: Of 157 patients with video-EEG confirmed NES, 37 (24%) had the onset of their seizures attributed to an HI. Their average age was 34 years (range, 15–56 years); 68% were women. Nonepileptic PTS usually developed within the first year after HI (89%). Convulsive symptoms were present in 54%. Whereas epileptic PTSs characteristically follow severe HI, the majority (78%) of our patients with nonepileptic PTSs sustained only mild HI. Before their HI, 76% of our patients were employed, working in the home, or students, but only 11% could continue those activities after developing nonepileptic PTSs.
Conclusions: Nonepileptic PTSs are frequently mistaken for epileptic PTSs and result in serious disability. The misdiagnosis of nonepileptic PTSs leads to ineffective and inappropriate treatment. Patients with intractable seizures after HIS, articularly mild HIS, should be carefully evaluated for NESs.  相似文献

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is the principal intermediate filament protein found in mature astrocytes. Although the exact function of GFAP is poorly understood, it is presumed to stabilize the astrocyte’s cytoskeleton and help in maintaining cell shape. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that when astrocytes were cocultured with primary Schwann cells (pSCs), astrocytes became hypertrophied and fibrous with intensely positive GFAP staining and segregated Schwann cells (SCs) into pockets. In order to understand the functional role of GFAP in this already established astrocyte-SC coculture model, we generated GFAP-negative cell lines from a GFAP-positive astrocytoma cell line and cocultured both the cell lines with pSCs. Our studies demonstrate that the GFAP-positive cell line put out processes toward the SCs, whereas the GFAP-negative cells did not form processes and the majority of the cells remained round. The most significant and interesting finding of this study, however, is the formation of elaborate processes by SCs when grown in coculture with the astrocytoma cells, unlike SCs cultured alone, which showed their typical bipolar spindle-shaped morphology. The extent of processes did not seem to be dependent on GFAP, since SCs cultured with both the cell lines formed similar processes. This coculture model may be useful in elucidating the factor(s) responsible for the formation of processes by SCs and can be further help in our understanding of the mechanism of morphological transformation of SCs.  相似文献

Chronic/relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE) serves as an animal model for relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis. Treatment with the β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol or the β2-adrenergic agonist terbutaline significantly suppressed both the first acute attack and the number of relapses in CREAE Lewis rats. The number of relapses was decreased even when treatment with β-adrenergic agonist was started after the onset of the first acute attack of CREAE. β-adrenergic receptor number was increased significantly on splenocytes from CREAE rats as compared to healthy controls or CFA-injected rats. Terbutaline treatment of CREAE rats lowered the splenocyte receptor number to normal values.  相似文献

A neonate with severe respiratory distress due to a benign mediastinal teratoma (MT) is reported. Despite early and easy surgical excision of the tumor, the child died due to poor cardiac function. Only ten cases of MT in neonates have been reported in the literature so far. While the tumor has been known to interfere with lung development in utero, postnatal myocardial dysfunction due to poor heart development has not been previously documented. The in vitro activity of ceftriaxone and six additional antimicrobial agents (ceftizoxime, cefoperazone, cefuroxime, fleroxacin, ciprofloxacin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) was assessed or 602 recent clinical isolates of staphylococci from six geographically distinct medical centers in North America. All seven antimicrobial agents were active (90–100% of strains susceptible) against oxacillin-susceptible (OS) strains of Staphylococcus aureus (OSSA) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (OSCNS) but had limited activity against oxacillin resistant (OR) staphylococci. Our assessment of the in vitro antistaphylococcal activity of ceftriaxone against contemporary isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci indicates that the activity versus OS staphylococci has not changed over the past decade despite widespread use of the drug. It appears that these agents will continue to be useful for empiric therapy in those centers in which OR strains are uncommon.Corresponding author.  相似文献

Many previous studies have examined the effects of norepinephrine (NE) on neuronal responsiveness to synaptic inputs and putative transmitter substances and have described differential depressant actions of NE on stimulus evoked versus spontaneous discharge such that the "signal to noise" ratio of threshold responses was increased. In the present studies, similar experimental strategies employing a combination of microiontophoresis, single unit recording and afferent pathway stimulation in intact anesthetized and brain tissue slice preparations have revealed noradrenergic "gating" actions whereby weak or subthreshold synaptic stimuli can evoke threshold neuronal responses in the presence of iontophoretically applied NE or following electrical stimulation of the locus coeruleus. Overall, these results suggest that potentially threshold excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs may normally arrive at central neurons but appear weak or absent except during behavioral conditions favoring the synaptic release of NE. As such, these findings provide evidence that signal to noise ratio may not be the only potential modulatory action expressed by NE in noradrenergic target circuits of the mammalian brain.  相似文献

Sixteen parkinsonians with acquired drug-resistant "off" periods without dyskinesia were placed on a diet in which virtually all protein was concentrated in the evening meal. Restoration of sensitivity to levodopa resulted in 88%. Ten patients (62%) have continued to comply with the diet for 7 months (mean). Two patients were studied in detail. Immobility correlated with elevated plasma levels of large neutral amino acids (LNAA), normality with low LNAA.  相似文献
