Clinico-pathologic conference: an 11-year-old girl with lupus erythematosus, venous thromboses, and purpura fulminans

An 11 year old girl with known diagnosis of lupus erythematosus with nephritis was admitted with respiratory distress during an episode in which she had infection with varicella-zoster virus complicated by purpura fulminans. She had a downhill course, terminating with a pulmonary embolus.     

What lies ahead in infant nutrition

Factors in human milk serve as stimuli for present and future investigation as supplements for infants. These substances involve macronutrients and micronutrients. Some substances such as minerals may serve as guidelines for minima and maxima for infant nutrition. While nutritional studies are needed for the prevention of disease, simultaneous nutritional studies for low birth weight and ill infants will bring major alterations in understanding of nutritional needs and types of feedings to become available.     

Nutritional requirements of infants and children with respect to cholesterol and related compounds

Cholesterol is an enigmatic, essential metabolite. Breast milk contains significant quantities of cholesterol, yet human infants thrive on cholesterol-free diets. Recommendations to lower serum cholesterol are widespread, yet low serum cholesterol is associated with poorly understood morbidity. Serum cholesterol is increased with diets high in fat, yet dietary cholesterol has relatively little effect on serum concentrations. Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, marked with extremely low serum cholesterol, may serve as a human model for the evaluation of absorption and metabolism of dietary cholesterol. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     

MR imaging of the acutely injured patient with cervical traction

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the patient with acute cervical injury is important because of the potential prognostic significance of the appearance of the spinal cord at the time of injury. However, cervical traction may involve equipment incompatible with the magnetic environment, and transferring the patient to the imaging table may make it difficult to maintain traction. The authors describe a simple, inexpensive, and reliable method for providing cervical traction within the magnet room.     

Using Intervention Mapping to develop a programme to prevent sexually transmittable infections,including HIV,among heterosexual migrant men

Background  

There is little experience with carefully developed interventions in the HIV/STI prevention field aimed at adult heterosexual target groups in the Netherlands. The ability to apply intervention development protocols, like Intervention Mapping, in daily practice outside of academia, is a matter of concern. An urgent need also exists for interventions aimed at the prevention of STI in migrant populations in the Netherlands. This article describes the theory and evidence based development of HIV/STI prevention interventions by the Municipal Public Health Service Rotterdam Area (MPHS), the Netherlands, for heterosexual migrant men with Surinamese, Dutch-Caribbean, Cape Verdean, Turkish and Moroccan backgrounds.
