Lyme disease (or Lyme borreliosis) is caused by a spirochetal bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. Increased recognition of the disease and increased exposure to the vector (ticks) capable of spreading B. burgdorferi from animal hosts have resulted in a rise in the number of cases of Lyme borreliosis reported in the United States. There are three stages of the clinical course of Lyme borreliosis; however, not all those infected will have typical manifestations of each stage, such as the arthritis of the third stage. Routine blood cultures will rarely document bacteremia and serologic testing is not yet reliable. Early treatment can prevent later stages of Lyme borreliosis. There is evidence that transmission of B. burgdorferi by blood transfusion is possible, but, to date, there has been no documentation of transfusion- associated Lyme borreliosis. Thus, no new recommendations for screening donors to identify possible carriers of B. burgdorferi are suggested at this time. 相似文献

We used cultured adult mouse retinae as a model system to follow and quantify the retraction of dendrites using diolistic labelling of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) following explantation. Cell death was monitored in parallel by nuclear staining as ‘labelling’ with RGC and apoptotic markers was inconsistent and exceedingly difficult to quantify reliably. Nuclear staining allowed us to delineate a lengthy time window during which dendrite retraction can be monitored in the absence of RGC death. The addition of brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) produced a marked reduction in dendritic degeneration, even when application was delayed for 3 days after retinal explantation. These results suggest that the delayed addition of trophic factors may be functionally beneficial before the loss of cell bodies in the course of conditions such as glaucoma. 相似文献

Two patients are described in whom clinically significant red blood cell alloantibodies could be demonstrated only by in vivo 51chromium (51Cr) survival studies. The first patient had experienced a severe delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction to four units of crossmatch compatible blood. Serial phenotype studies suggested the presence of a serologically undetectable anti-c (hr') antibody. 51Cr survival of c- positive red blood cells was one per cent at 24 hours, while survival of c-negative red blood cells was 80 per cent at 24 hours. The second patient had multiple red blood cell alloantibodies. An anti-c antibody was suspected but could not be convincingly demonstrated by in vitro techniques. 51Cr survival of c-positive red blood cells, however, was 57 per cent at 24 hours and 17 per cent at 48 hours. 51Chromium red blood cell survival studies should be considered whenever an unexplained hemolytic transfusion reaction occurs, or when an expected red blood cell alloantibody cannot be demonstrated by in vitro laboratory studies. 相似文献

Isofemale lines of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes highly and lowly susceptible to dengue type 2 (DEN-2) virus (DEN(h) and DEN(l), respectively) were established by oral feeding and individual rearing. The susceptibility at F13 generation was found to be 61% and 25% for the DEN(h) and DEN(l) line, respectively. The virus-infected mosquito females were allowed to probe on bovine albumin phosphate saline pH 7.2 (BAPS) through membrane feeders. The presence of virus in the probed BAPS was determined either by ELISA or by intrathoracic (i.t.) inoculation of mosquitoes or by both methods. The rate of oral transmission of virus was found to be 2 times higher in the DEN(h) isofemale line than in the DEN(l) one. Similarly, vertical transmission rate of the virus was found to be 7 times higher in the DEN(h) line. When batches of eggs obtained from infected female mosquitoes were allowed to hatch after two months the vertical transmission rate of the virus was very high. It is possible that, at room temperature, the virus gets an opportunity to multiply and increase its copy number in the quiescent embryos. The progeny obtained from the infected mosquitoes was found to be capable of transmitting the virus horizontally when allowed to probe on BAPS through the membrane feeder. This is the first report demonstrating horizontal transmission of DEN-2 virus by mosquitoes infected through vertical transmission. The higher vertical transmission rate of the virus in the progeny obtained from the eggs dessicated for a longer time and the horizontal transmission of the virus from the progeny is of very high epidemiological significance. 相似文献
