Septum formation of the lateral ventricles

In an MRI study examining anomalies of the septum pellucidum in 505 cases, we detected bilateral septum formation of the lateral ventricles in a 17-month-old baby. In this study, we evaluate 505 (242 males and 263 females) patients referred to the Emaray Imaging Center, Ankara, Turkey with various prediagnoses. We specially selected all the cases from a non-psychotic population. We obtained MRI scans on a 1-Tesla imager (Picker International, Highland Heights, Ohio, USA), with slices of 5 and 6 mm thickness. In axial and coronal sections, we observed septum formation laterally between the anterior horn and the ventricular body of the lateral ventricles. Radio opaque septum formations started from the caudate nucleus and stretched to the genu of the corpus callosum. There was a second septum formation between the posterior horn and the ventricular body of the right lateral ventricle. It started from the caudate nucleus and stretched to the cavum vergae.     

A Case of Tubulointerstitial Nephritis and Uveitis in an Adult Male

We report a case of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome in an adult male. A 40-year-old man was found to have bilateral anterior uveitis and mild renal insufficiency with high urinary β-2 microglobulin. Work up for connective tissue and infectious diseases were negative. His kidney function normalized spontaneously and remained normal at 1 year without intervention. Uveitis responded completely to local corticosteroid treatment and has not recurred.     

Post-transplant IVC occlusion and thrombosis treated with tPA, heparin, and sharp recanalization

Complete inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis can be a lethal complication in a liver transplant recipient. The case of a 52-year-old liver transplant recipient, who developed complete IVC as well as left iliofemoral thrombosis, is reported. After treatment with combined tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and heparin, the IVC was successfully recanalized with sharp dissection, balloon dilatation, and stent placement.     

Maternal treatment with propofol attenuates lipid peroxidation after transient intrauterine ischemia in the neonatal rat brain

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether propofol has a neuroprotective effect on the fetal brain after intrauterine ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in the rat fetus. Fetal brain ischemia was induced by clamping the utero-ovarian artery bilaterally for 30 min and reperfusion was achieved by removing the clamps for 2 h. A 40-mg/kg single dose of propofol was administered intraperitoneally 15 min before I/R injury. Lipid peroxidation in the brain tissue was determined as the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) for each fetal rat. Results showed that lipid peroxidation byproducts increased after I/R injury. Maternal treatment with propofol reduced TBARS compared to the I/R group. Propofol has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in intrauterine I/R-induced fetal brain damage in rats.     

Splenic rupture in a parental donor undergoing peripheral blood progenitor cell mobilization

Peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPCs) are now widely used as a source of progenitor cells for allogeneic transplantation. Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor is used to mobilize PBPCs for collection by leukapheresis. Although side effects of mobilization are generally benign, adverse effects have been reported. The authors present a case of spontaneous splenic rupture, without splenomegaly, in a parental donor undergoing PBPC mobilization, review the literature regarding this adverse event, and explore issues regarding donor safety.     

Pseudomass of the sternal manubrium in osteogenesis imperfecta

Skeletal abnormalities such as hypertrophic callus formation and "popcorn" calcifications are rare radiological findings of osteogenesis imperfecta, causing tumor-like appearances on imaging. We report on a 7-year-old girl with osteogenesis imperfecta presenting with hepatomegaly and palpable lymphadenopathy in the left inguinal region on physical examination. Computed tomography examination revealed a high-density mass-like lesion of the manubrium sterni. Ultrasonography and a lateral roentgenogram of the chest verified that this was a pseudomass caused by a bowed sternal manubrium.
