Diagnostic problems of salivary gland tumors

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of salivary gland is a popular technique with high sensitivity and specificity. However, the interpretation of FNAC smear of salivary gland lesions is a great challenge to the cytologists. The cytological features of the various tumors of the salivary gland have overlapping cytological features and many other lesions in the head neck region may mimic salivary lesions. Moreover, at times it may be difficult to differentiate benign from malignant tumor of the tumor with same cell of origin. Leishmania-induced biphasic ceramide generation in macrophages is crucial for uptake and survival of the parasite

The initial macrophage-Leishmania donovani interaction results in the formation of membrane platforms, termed lipid rafts, that help in the entry of the parasite. Therefore, it is imperative that the parasite designs a strategy to modulate its uptake and survival within the macrophages. Herein, we report Leishmania-triggered biphasic ceramide generation. In the first phase, L. donovani promastigotes induce activation of acid sphingomyelinase (ASMase), which catalyzes the formation of ceramide from sphingomyelin. Inhibition of ASMase resulted in reduced uptake and infection with the parasite. In the second phase, de novo synthesis generates ceramide that reduces the cellular cholesterol level and displaces the cholesterol from the membrane, leading to enhanced membrane fluidity, disruption of rafts, and impaired antigen-presentation to the T cells. The results reveal a novel role for ceramide in the perspective of L. donovani infection and help formulate an antileishmanial strategy that can possibly be applied to other intracellular infections as well.     

The effect of systemically administrated zoledronic acid on the osseointegration of dental implants

Oral Diseases (2012) 18 , 802–808 Objective: The aim of conducting this study was to evaluate the effect of zoledronic acid (ZA) on the new bone formation (NBF) after the insertion of a titanium dental implant, which is very popular treatment in dentistry. Study Design: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were used in this study. The rabbits were divided in two groups. ZA was systemically administered to the study group. Titanium implants were placed to the left and right tibias of the rabbits. Results: The data from the ZA group revealed a statistically significant increase in the bone mineral content and the bone mineral density. A non‐decalcified histomorphometric examination conducted on the study group revealed a significant increase of NBF and bone‐implant contact (BIC) at 2 and 4 weeks. Conclusion: A single dose of systemic ZA administration increases the rate of NBF and augments the quality of the bone.
