Our aim was to investigate whether fish consumption is associated with the consumption of other healthy foods. The study population consisted of 2605 men and 3199 women from the nationally representative Health 2000 survey and 114 professional fishermen and 114 fishermen's wives (the Fishermen substudy) in Finland. Dietary data were collected using a calibrated (i.e. determined to have relative validity) FFQ. Model-adjusted means for food consumption and P values for linear trend were calculated across fish consumption tertiles. Those with the highest fish consumption had the highest consumption of vegetables, fruit and berries, potatoes, oil and wine even after adjusting for other food groups. The consumption of red meat and sausages had a tendency to decrease across fish consumption tertiles but the associations were inconsistent in the study populations. In conclusion, fish consumption had a positive linear association with the consumption of some other healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, berries, and oil both in the general population of Finland and in a population with high fish consumption. Additional adjustment for other food groups had a clear effect on some of the studied associations. Therefore, when evaluating the health effects of fish consumption, confounding by other foods characterising a healthy diet needs to be considered.  相似文献

Hypobaric hypoxia is encountered at high altitude. It has a deleterious effect on cognitive functions. An important cause of memory impairment at high altitude is the impairment of neurotransmission. The present study investigates the role of cholinergic markers in hypobaric hypoxia-induced memory impairment. Rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia at 6,100 m for 7 days in a simulated-decompression chamber. Memory performance was assessed using the Morris water maze task. Cholinergic markers such as acetylcholine, acetylcholinesterase, choline acetyltransferase, α-7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and M(1) muscarinic acetylcholine receptor were also evaluated along with neuronal morphology and DNA fragmentation. We found impairment in memory function along with a decrease in acetylcholine levels, increase in acetylcholinesterase activity, down regulation of choline acetyltransferase, α-7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and M(1) muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. We also found that cellular damage is associated with a significant increase in DNA fragmentation. However, administration of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, such as physostigmine and galantamine, resulted in amelioration of the hypobaric hypoxia induced deleterious effects. It improved acetylcholine level, decreased acetylcholinesterase activity and increased the synthesis of acetylcholine by increasing choline acetyltransferase activity. Also, the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors improved neuronal morphology, perhaps by increasing the expression of α-7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and by reducing the acetylcholinesterase level in the cortex and the hippocampus. Therefore, our results suggest cholinergic dysfunction is one of the mechanisms involved in hypobaric hypoxia-induced memory impairment and that acetylcholinesterase inhibitors were able to restore cholinergic function and thus improve memory function.  相似文献

Eosinophils have been associated with the pathophysiology of various allergic diseases and asthma. Eosinophils secrete a number of granule proteins that have been identified as effector molecules responsible for many of the actions of eosinophils. The four major eosinophil granule proteins, major basic protein (MBP), eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), eosinophil derived neurotoxin (EDN) and eosinophil peroxidase have been shown to be involved in a number of eosinophil associated functions. EDN possesses antiviral activity against single stranded RNA viruses like respiratory syncytial virus, Hepatitis and HIV, whereas ECP and MBP have antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. This review summarizes the studies on antipathogenic activities of eosinophil granule proteins against bacteria, viruses, protozoans and helminths.  相似文献

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses constitute the most common group of childhood neurodegenerative disorders. These devastating disorders still remain without effective treatment. The use of animal models has provided significant information about NCL pathogenesis, highlighting early glial activation and neuron loss in specific brain regions of affected animals. Here, we have characterized the timing and regional-specificity of the pathological events of CLN8 disease utilizing the Cln8 deficient mouse model, Cln8(mnd). We have studied the progression of neuron loss, astrocytosis and microglial activation from early to moderately symptomatic (1, 3 and 5 months) and late symptomatic (8 months) mice. In Cln8 deficiency, the somatosensory pathway comprising the thalamic ventral posterior nucleus (VPM/VPL) and the primary somatosensory cortex (S1BF) was found to be the most affected relay system. Scattered microglia that appeared partially activated were already present at 3 months of age, followed by astrocytosis and the loss of thalamic relay neurons at 5 months of age, with all these phenotypes and glial activation becoming more pronounced with disease progression. Reactive changes followed a similar pattern in the corresponding cortical target regions, but only moderate neuron loss was detected. Compared to the somatosensory system, in the visual thalamocortical pathway, neuron loss appeared relatively late in the disease, at 8 months. Neuron loss was preceded by glial activation in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) and in the primary visual cortex (V1). Taken together these data highlight the pathological targeting of the somatosensory thalamocortical pathway in Cln8 deficiency, in common with other forms of NCL. However, in contrast to other previously characterized NCL models, the Cln8(mnd) mouse shows relatively mild and late appearing pathology within the thalamocortical visual pathway.  相似文献

In this review, we present a transdiagnostic emotion dysregulation model of mood and anxiety disorders. This model posits that a triggering event, in conjunction with an existing diathesis, leads to negative or positive affect, depending on the person's affective style. Mood and anxiety disorders are the result of emotion dysregulation of negative affect, coupled with deficiencies in positive affect. The theoretical background of the model is discussed and a range of clinical applications of the model is described.  相似文献
