Layer 6 (L6) of primary sensory cortices is distinct from other layers in that it provides a major cortical input to primary sensory thalamic nuclei. L6 pyramidal neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) send projections to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), as well as to the thalamic reticular nucleus and higher order thalamic nuclei. Although L6 neurons are proposed to modulate the activity of thalamic relay neurons, how sensory experience regulates L6 neurons is largely unknown. Several days of visual deprivation homeostatically adjusts excitatory synapses in L4 and L2/3 of V1 depending on the developmental age. For instance, L4 exhibits an early critical period during which visual deprivation homeostatically scales up excitatory synaptic transmission. On the other hand, homeostatic changes in L2/3 excitatory synapses are delayed and persist into adulthood. In the present study we examined how visual deprivation affects excitatory synapses on L6 pyramidal neurons. We found that L6 pyramidal neurons homeostatically increase the strength of excitatory synapses following 2 days of dark exposure (DE), which was readily reversed by 1 day of light exposure. This effect was restricted to an early critical period, similar to that reported for L4 neurons. However, at a later developmental age, a longer duration of DE (1 wk) decreased the strength of excitatory synapses, which reversed to normal levels with light exposure. These changes are opposite to what is predicted from the homeostatic plasticity theory. Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of CT to assess the relative difference of degree of bone mineralization (grey level) parameters in a human mandible.Methods:
Ten mandibular sections from cadavers (81.5 ± 12.1 years) were scanned using micro-CT with 27.2 μm voxel size and cone beam CT (CBCT) with 200 μm, 300 μm, and 400 μm voxel sizes. In addition, 15 clinical CBCT images from young patients (mean age 18.9 ± 3.3 years) were identified. After segmentation of bone voxels, alveolar bone and basal cortical bone regions were digitally isolated. A histogram of grey level, which is equivalent to degree of bone mineralization, was obtained from each region of the CT images. Mean, standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (COV), fifth percentile low (Low5) and high (High5) of alveolar bone and basal cortical bone regions were obtained. Percentage differences of grey level parameters between alveolar and basal cortical bones were computed.Results:
The alveolar bone region had significantly lower Mean, Low5 and High5 values but significantly higher SD and COV than the basal cortical bone region for all CT images (p < 0.05). All parameters were significantly lower for the old cadaver group than for the young patient group (p < 0.05).Conclusions:
CBCT and micro-CT provide comparable results in the assessment of relative difference in grey level distribution between alveolar and basal cortical bone regions in the human mandible. We reviewed the MR imaging features of ankle tuberculosis and determined the role of MR in its diagnosis. A retrospective analysis of 14 cases of ankle tuberculosis imaged with MRI was performed. Plain radiographs were also reviewed where available, and the imaging characteristics were noted. We also reviewed the medical records in order to assess the impact of the imaging findings on management of these patients. Magnetic resonance imaging is extremely helpful for detection, mapping the extent and resolution of the disease.
