Multidimensional approach to the differences between muscular and articular temporomandibular patients: coping, distress, and pain characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes the differences in psychological variables and symptomatology between temporomandibular disorder diagnosis subgroups. STUDY DESIGN: The sample included 114 temporomandibular disorder patients that were evaluated in coping, distress, and temporomandibular characteristics. Diagnostic muscular (n = 58) and articular (n = 56) subgroups were compared in these variables through a MANCOVA. RESULTS: Muscular patients show a higher level of general distress, specifically in the anxiety and somatization subscales and a more active coping style, with a tendency of a minor use of humor and a higher number of parafunctional habits, specifically, biting nails, hangnails, and lips. CONCLUSION: We discuss the differences found in order to design the targets of the psychological intervention of temporomandibular patients.     

Locally aggressive central odontogenic fibroma associated to an inflammatory cyst: a clinical, histological and immunohistochemical study

The case describes a 38-year-old woman presenting a multilocular radiolucency affecting the entire right half of the lower jaw, with an unerupted third molar displaced to the region of the coronoid process. The histological study showed the presence of fibroblasts, focally with pleomorphic nuclei, dense collagen and an odontogenic epithelium with dystrophic calcifications. A cyst with an important inflammatory infiltrate was, moreover, observed.     

Knee-ankle-foot orthosis in children with duchenne muscular dystrophy: user views and adjustment.

BACKGROUND: The use of knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs) to prolong independent mobility is a widely used rehabilitation strategy for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). AIMS: To explore views and adjustment of families with a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy to the use of KAFOs. METHODS: interviews with families of children aged 8-18 years with DMD; questionnaires on psychiatric adjustment (SDQ for children; GHQ for parents). RESULTS: In total, 17 parents and 9 children took part. Families experienced the introduction of KAFOs as a signal for illness deterioration and a re-awakening of the feelings experienced at diagnosis. Nevertheless, the majority expressed a positive attitude and over two-thirds satisfaction with KAFOs use. High psychiatric risk was found in 2/17 children (12%; expected 10%) and 7/17 main carers (41%; expected 20-30%). CONCLUSION: Most families were satisfied with KAFOs use, and its implementation was well tolerated especially by the children. However, mental distress was high in main carers who emphasized the importance of full preparation and support in this rehabilitation technique.     

Hydrophobicity of β-adrenoceptor blocking agents: Study of correlations between retention in reversed-phase HPLC systems and octanol-water partition constants

The capacity factors (k′) of seven β-adrenoceptor blocking agents in six different reversed-phase HPLC systems have been determined. Octanol-aqueous buffer (pH 7.4) partition constants (P) for these blocking agents were also obtained. By using target factor analysis (TFA), good empirical correlations between the log k′ and log P were derived. The resulting hydrophobicity order agrees well with the metabolic elimination pathways of these drugs.
