The structural evolution of multiblock thermoplastic polyurethane ureas based on two polydiols, poly(1,4-butylene adipate (PBA) and poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL), as soft blocks and two diisocyanites, 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate (TDI) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), as hard blocks is monitored during in situ deformation by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. It was shown that the urethane environment determines the crystal structure of the soft block. Consequently, two populations of crystalline domains of polydiols are formed. Aromatic TDI forms rigid domains and imposes constrains on the crystallization of bounded polydiol. During stretching, the TDI–polydiol domains reveal limited elastic deformation without reorganization of the crystalline phase. The constrained lamellae of polydiol form an additional physical network that contributes to the elastic modulus and strength of the material. In contrast, polydiols connected to the linear semi-flexible HMDI have a higher crystallization rate and exhibit a more regular lamellar morphology. During deformation, the HMDI-PBA domains show a typical thermoplastic behavior with plastic flow and necking because of the high degree of crystallinity of PBA at room temperature. Materials with HMDI-PCL bonding exhibit elastic deformation due to the low degree of crystallinity of the PCL block in the isotropic state. At higher strain, hardening of the material is observed due to the stress-induced crystallization of PCL.  相似文献

The Bcl proteins play a critical role in apoptosis, as mutations in family members interfere with normal programmed cell death. Such events can cause cell transformation, potentially leading to cancer. Recent discoveries indicate that some viral proteins interfere with Bcl proteins either directly or indirectly; however, these data have not been systematically described. Some viruses encode proteins that reprogramme host cellular signalling pathways controlling cell differentiation, proliferation, genomic integrity, cell death, and immune system recognition. This review analyses and summarises the existing data and discusses how viral proteins interfere with normal pro- and anti-apoptotic functions of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. Particularly, this article focuses on how viral proteins, such as Herpesviruses, HTLV-1, HPV and HCV, block apoptosis and how accumulation of such interference predisposes cancer development. Finally, we discuss possible ways to prevent and treat cancers using a combination of traditional therapies and antiviral preparations that are effective against these viruses.  相似文献

To investigate the relationship between thyroid function and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in a relatively large general population with euthyroid status we initially enrolled 1772 Japanese adults (421 men and 1351 women) who participated in a medical screening program for the general population over 40 years old. To evaluate only euthyroid subjects without vascular diseases and/or its major risk factors, 1129 were excluded and 643 participants (175 men and 468 women) were included for further analysis. Simple and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate free thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and other existing parameters, including carotid intima-media thickness. By multivariate linear regression analysis adjusted for age and sex, free thyroxine was significantly correlated with triglycerides (beta=0.07, p=0.015), carotid intima-media thickness (beta=-0.091, p=0.049), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (beta=-0.091, p=0.003). Thyroid-stimulating hormone was significantly correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (beta=-0.001, p=0.015), HbA(1c) (beta=0.038, p=0.045), carotid intima-media thickness (beta=0.27, p=0.001), and free thyroxine (beta=-0.15, p=0.003). When adjusted for confounding factors, free thyroxine was significantly correlated only with carotid intima-media thickness (beta=-0.13, p=0.043) and thyroid-stimulating hormone was significantly correlated with HDL-C (beta=-0.001, p<0.001), HbA(1c) (beta=0.04, p=0.021), and carotid intima-media thickness (beta=0.29, p=0.001). We have demonstrated that carotid intima-media thickness is independently associated with thyroid function within the normal reference range, which suggests an increased cardiovascular risk in subjects with low normal thyroid function.  相似文献

Background

In preparation of vaccines trials to estimate protection against shigellosis and cholera we conducted a two-year community-based surveillance study in an impoverished area of North Jakarta which provided updated information on the disease burden in the area.

Methods

We conducted a two-year community-based surveillance study from August 2001 to July 2003 in an impoverished area of North Jakarta to assess the burden of diarrhoea, shigellosis, and cholera. At participating health care providers, a case report form was completed and stool sample collected from cases presenting with diarrhoea.

Results

Infants had the highest incidences of diarrhoea (759/1 000/year) and cholera (4/1 000/year). Diarrhea incidence was significantly higher in boys under 5 years (387/1 000/year) than girls under 5 years (309/1 000/year; p < 0.001). Children aged 1 to 2 years had the highest incidence of shigellosis (32/1 000/year). Shigella flexneri was the most common Shigella species isolated and 73% to 95% of these isolates were resistant to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol and tetracycline but remain susceptible to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone. We found an overall incidence of cholera of 0.5/1 000/year. Cholera was most common in children, with the highest incidence at 4/1 000/year in those less than 1 year of age. Of the 154 V. cholerae O1 isolates, 89 (58%) were of the El Tor Ogawa serotype and 65 (42%) were El Tor Inaba. Thirty-four percent of patients with cholera were intravenously rehydrated and 22% required hospitalization. V. parahaemolyticus infections were detected sporadically but increased from July 2002 onwards.

Conclusion

Diarrhoea causes a heavy public health burden in Jakarta particularly in young children. The impact of shigellosis is exacerbated by the threat of antimicrobial resistance, whereas that of cholera is aggravated by its severe manifestations.  相似文献

We employ a combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) to investigate the properties of layered PtS2, synthesised via thermally assisted conversion (TAC) of a metallic Pt thin film. STM measurements reveal the 1T crystal structure of PtS2, and the lattice constant is determined to be 3.58 ± 0.03 Å. STS allowed the electronic structure of individual PtS2 crystallites to be directly probed and a bandgap of ∼1.03 eV was determined for a 3.8 nm thick flake at liquid nitrogen temperature. These findings substantially expand understanding of the atomic and electronic structure of PtS2 and indicate that STM is a powerful tool capable of locally probing non-uniform polycrystalline films, such as those produced by TAC. Prior to STM/STS measurements the quality of synthesised TAC PtS2 was analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. These results are of relevance to applications-focussed studies centred on PtS2 and may inform future efforts to optimise the synthesis conditions for thin film PtS2.

Manufacturers of building materials strive to optimize the three basic concrete properties—strength, durability, and shrinkage deformation, of which the focus is generally on the durability in the structure when designing and monitoring the poured concrete. Studying concretes’ structural performance and the change in their characteristics over time enables the solution of many important issues associated with the design of reliable, durable, and cost-effective buildings and structures. This article presents studies aimed at improving the physical, technical, and operational characteristics of cement concrete and reducing cement consumption in heavy concretes through the use of complex modifiers and volumetric fiber reinforcement. Four concrete compositions of widely recognized grades were developed, of which samples were molded and tested for compressive and flexural strength, frost resistance, volumetric water absorption, and density. Test results confirmed the possibility of binder (cement) economy up to 18% and increasing frost resistance up to W300 when using microsilica, reduction in volumetric water absorption of up to 40% when using both microsilica and hyperplasticizer, and increasing flexural strength by over 30% when using polymer fiber. The developed compositions passed the industrial tests, and were successfully introduced in the production process of the operating reinforced concrete products’ manufacturer.  相似文献
