An ethnobotanical survey detected 71 plants used for the treatment of vaginitis by traditional healers, health promoters and midwives. Extracts prepared by maceration of plants in 50% methanol were impregnated on absorbent paper disks and placed over plates with Candida albicans. Eight (11.3%) of these plants showed some degree of inhibition. Solanum nigrescens was chosen for further studies. A cream containing a 50% ethanolic maceration was applied daily to the vagina of female guinea pigs for 15 days and observed for another 15 days. Since no inflammatory changes were observed, this preparation was used for clinical trials. Two groups of 50 non-pregnant women with confirmed C. albicans vaginitis were treated for 15 days, one group with intra-vaginal suppositories containing S. nigrescens maceration and the other with nystatin suppositories. By statistical analysis it was demonstrated that both groups behaved in a similar beneficial way suggesting that this plant may be effective for the treatment of candidal vaginitis.  相似文献

We studied the growth hormone (GH) response to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in four groups of patients with dementia and examined whether GH and TSH secretion is altered in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The four groups included those with Alzheimer's disease (n=28), parkinsonism with dementia (n=10), progressive supranuclear palsy with dementia (n=10), and dementia of vascular origin (n=28). The results showed no differences among the four groups in GH response to GHRH (12.2 ± 2, 10.7 ± 2, 8.9 ±1.1, and 9.9 ± 1.9 g/ml, respectively); there was no correlation between GH response to GHRH and sex, stage of the disease, or cerebral atrophy. The proportion of patients with exaggerated, normal, or lower GH response was similar in the four groups. There were also no differences among the groups in terms of TSH response to TRH (9.2 ±0.9, 11.1 ± 1, 11.1 ± 1, and 10.3 ± 1 mU/ml, respectively), nor was there a correlation between TSH response to TRH and sex, stage of the disease, cerebral atrophy, or GH response to GHRH. The proportion of those with exaggerated, normal, or lower TSH response was similar in the four groups. Cerebrospinal somatostatin levels were similar in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia patients. In 30- and 90-day-old rats, using immunohistochemistry for glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD-67), we have tested whether malnutrition during different periods of hippocampal development produces deleterious effects on the population of GABA neurons in the dentate gyrus (DG) and cornu Ammonis (CA1-3) of the dorsal hippocampus. Animals were under one of four nutritional conditions: well-nourished controls (Con), prenatal protein malnourished (PreM), postnatal protein malnourished (PostM), and chronic protein malnourished (ChroM). We found that the number of GAD-67-positive (GAD-67+) interneurons was higher in the DG than in the CA1-3 areas of both Con and malnourished groups. Regarding the DG, the number of GAD-67+ interneurons was increased in PreM and PostM and decreased in ChroM at 30 days. At 90 days of age the number of GAD-67+ interneurons was increased in PostM and ChroM and remained unchanged in PreM. With respect to CA1-3, the number of labeled interneurons was decreased in PostM and ChroM at 30 days of age, but no change was found in PreM. At 90 days no changes in the number of these interneurons were found in any of the groups. These observations suggest that 1) the cell death program starting point is delayed in DG GAD-67+ interneurons, and 2) protein malnutrition differentially affects GAD-67+ interneuron development throughout the dorsal hippocampus. Thus, these changes in the number of GAD-67+ interneurons may partly explain the alterations in modulation of dentate granule cell excitability, as well as in the emotional, motivational, and memory disturbances commonly observed in malnourished rats.  相似文献

The persistence of proliferative cells, which could correspond to progenitor populations or potential cells of origin for tumors, has been extensively studied in the adult mammalian forebrain, including human and nonhuman primates. Proliferating cells have been found along the entire ventricular system, including around the central canal, of rodents, but little is known about the primate spinal cord. Here we describe the central canal cellular composition of the Old World primate Macaca fascicularis via scanning and transmission electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry and identify central canal proliferating cells with Ki67 and newly generated cells with bromodeoxyuridine incorporation 3 months after the injection. The central canal is composed of uniciliated, biciliated, and multiciliated ependymal cells, astrocytes, and neurons. Multiciliated ependymal cells show morphological characteristics similar to multiciliated ependymal cells from the lateral ventricles, and uniciliated and biciliated ependymal cells display cilia with large, star‐shaped basal bodies, similar to the Ecc cells described for the rodent central canal. Here we show that ependymal cells with one or two cilia, but not multiciliated ependymal cells, proliferate and give rise to new ependymal cells that presumably remain in the macaque central canal. We found that the infant and adult human spinal cord contains ependymal cell types that resemble those present in the macaque. Interestingly, a wide hypocellular layer formed by bundles of intermediate filaments surrounded the central canal both in the monkey and in the human, being more prominent in the stenosed adult human central canal. We propose a new reliable transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) index based on magnetic resonance venography (MRV) for the diagnosis of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Our quantitative semi-automatic measurement analysis based on segmentation and cross-sectional TS diameter from 48 IIH patients and controls matched for age and sex, had a good inter-observer agreement (κ = 0.729) compared to a visual examination (κ = 0.467). A cut-off point  2 discriminate IIH patients from controls, with a sensitivity and specificity of 100%.  相似文献
