Social, functional, and neuropsychological determinants of the psychiatric symptoms of stroke patients receiving rehabilitation and living at home

In view of the strong evidence supporting the hypothesis that high Expressed Emotion of a key relative contributes to relapse in psychiatric patients, methods used in Expressed Emotion research were applied in an investigation of psychiatric disorder in stroke patients receiving hospital based rehabilitation and support. Patient mood in 37 stroke patients was related to the critical attitude of a key relative. Patient depression may also have been associated with severity of dysphasia, but no link was found between patient mood and the other measures of cognitive or physical deficit used in this study. Psychiatric distress in the key relative had a rather different causal basis. Relatives' psychiatric disorders were associated with physical burden, cognitive deficit, and severity of dysphasia. This study suggests that, when the patient is dependent for self-care, rehabilitation-assisted recovery may alleviate relative distress more than patient distress.     

The impact of nursing diagnoses in a long-term care setting

Nursing diagnosis as a critical component of the nursing process provides a common taxonomy to describe problems that nurses can treat and is a convenient, logical way to reference nursing standards. Theory is translated into practice with the use of population-specific prototype care guides and a written orders system. Nurses in leadership are responsible for providing the necessary resources to promote professional growth and facilitate desired change. Recommendations to assist with the implementation of nursing diagnosis are identified in Table 1. The system is dependent on staff nurses' professional commitment to learning and willingness to actively participate in change. Involvement of staff nurses continues to be a critical factor in the improvement of nursing practice.     

Alpha-adrenoreceptor reagents. 4. Resolution of some potent selective prejunctional alpha 2-adrenoreceptor antagonists

The resolution of three 2-substituted derivatives of idazoxan is described. The enantiomers show large separations in activity in a variety of in vitro and in vivo tests, and the active isomers are all potent and selective antagonists at the alpha 2-adrenoreceptor. The significance of these results in relation to those published on the enantiomers of idazoxan and to those on optically active alpha 2-adrenoreceptor agonists is discussed.     

Synthesis of estradiol haptens

Synthesis of Estradiol Haptens Two estradiol haptens, 4-(3β,17β-dihydroxyestran-7α-yl)butanoic acid ( 9 ) and 7α-(4-aminobutyl)-3β,17β-estradiols ( 13 ), were prepared from 19-nortestosterone by partial synthesis. The binding activity for the cytosol estrogen receptor was determined by competition against [³H]-estradiol; at a concentration of 2×10^?7mol/l, compound 9 displaces 50% of [³H]-estradiol. Attached to AH-Sepharose 4B compound 9 allows the cytosol estrogen receptor from calf uterus to be concentrated 1800-fold by affinity chromatography.
