Probiotic bacteria are thought to reduce the risk of disease. Previous studies have suggested that lactobacilli-derived probiotics in dairy products may affect the oral ecology, but the effect of bifidobacteria has not previously been reported. The aim of the present study was to examine whether or not short-term consumption of yogurt containing bifidobacteria would affect the salivary levels of mutans streptococci and lactobacilli in young adults. A double-blind, randomized crossover study was performed and 21 healthy subjects were followed over four periods. During periods 2 and 4 (2 weeks each), they ingested 200 g yogurt containing Bifidobacterium DN-173 010 once daily or a control yogurt without viable bacteria. Periods 1 and 3 were run-in and washout periods, respectively. Salivary mutans streptococci and lactobacilli were enumerated with chair-side kits. A statistically significant reduction (p<0.05) of salivary mutans streptococci was recorded after the probiotic yogurt consumption, which was in contrast to the controls. A similar trend was seen for lactobacilli, but this decrease failed to reach statistical significance. In conclusion, probiotic bifidobacteria in yogurt may reduce the levels of selected caries-associated microorganisms in saliva.  相似文献

Backround/aimCyclophosphamide (CP) is a drug used for treatment of many malignant diseases. However, it can cause serious side effects such as hemorrhagic cystitis and male infertility. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous mediator and is suggested to have antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects. In this study, dose-dependent effects of H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis and testicular dysfunction were investigated in rats.Material and methodsRats were divided into 5 groups (n = 8): control, CP, NaHS25 μmol/kg, NaHS50 μmol/kg, and NaHS100 μmol/ kg. After treatment for 7 days intraperitoneally (ip), a single ip dose of CP 200 mg/kg was given on the 8th day. Then, treatment was continued for 7 days. In bladder and testicular tissues, IL 6, IL 10, cGMP, NO, H2S, FSH, LH, and testosterone levels were measured by ELISA. Histopathological examination with H&E staining, as well as immunohistochemical staining for acrolein in bladder and caspase-3 and APAF-1 in testis were performed.ResultsNaHS prevented the increased IL 6 and IL 10 values induced by CP as well as prevented the decrease in cGMP values associated with CP. There was no significant change in FSH values, but the LH value, which increased with CP, decreased with 25, 50, and 100 μmol/kg NaHS. In contrast, testosterone decreased in the CP group and increased in the treatment groups. NaHS was effective in many biochemical and histopathological parameters at 25 and 50 μmol/kg doses, and this effect decreased at 100 μmol/kg dose.ConclusionH2S has a protective and therapeutic effect on hemorrhagic cystitis and testicular dysfunction induced by cyclophosphamide. It can be suggested that H2S is a promising molecule in facilitating cancer treatment.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the effects of cisplatin on uterine histology and implantation molecules and the possible protective role of recombinant Klotho administration on uterine histology and uterine receptivity in mice exposed to cisplatin.Materials and methodsThis study was conducted using thirty-two adult female mice assigned to four groups with 8 mice in each group. Saline was given to the 1st group, cisplatin to the 2nd group, recombinant mouse Klotho to the 3rd group and recombinant mouse Klotho plus cisplatin to the 4th group. Uterine tissues were examined for damage histologically and immunobiologically for the uterine receptivity markers HOXA13 and alphaVBeta3 integrin.ResultsApoptosis, degeneration, decrease in uterine thickness and uterine absence of gland scores were higher in the cisplatin group (3rd group) compared to the saline group (1st group) (cisplatin vs. saline p < 0.0001 for all parameters). In the recombinant Klotho plus cisplatin group (4th group), scores of apoptosis, degeneration, reduction in uterine thickness and uterine absence of gland were lower than the group receiving only cisplatin (cisplatin plus recombinant Klotho vs cisplatin, p = 0.006 for apoptosis; p = 0.017 for degeneration; p = 0.011 for the reduction in uterine thickness; p = 0.002 for the absence of gland). However, HOXA13 and alphaVBeta3 integrin staining levels were not different between the cisplatin group (group 3) and the cisplatin plus recombinant Klotho group (group 4) (p = 0.980 and p = 0.762, respectively.)ConclusionCisplatin has adverse effects on the uterus. Administration of recombinant Klotho was found to attenuate the cisplatin-induced damage but failed to preserve levels of the implantation molecules HOXA13 and alphaVbeta3. Further studies examining the effect of cisplatin toxicity using other implantation markers along with functional studies are needed.  相似文献

Damaged supraorbital neurovascular bundle during anterior orbital approach, fronto-glabellar reconstruction flap, supraorbital injection, blepharospasm, and Graves disease surgery is an important complication reported with varying frequency. The origin, calibration, and branches of the supraorbital artery and its topographical relations were investigated by injection of the arterial bed with red-dyed latex in 38 forehead regions. The supraorbital artery with the supratrochlear artery arose from the orbit as two separate vessels in 33 out of 38 forehead sides (87%). The supraorbital artery entered the frontalis muscle between 20 and 30 mm in 20 cases (52.6%), and between 30 and 40 mm in 16 cases (42.1%). This artery was located approximately the subcutaneous tissues between 40 and 50 mm in 17 cases (44.7%), between 50 and 60 mm in 18 cases (47.4%). The transverse supraorbital vein coursed at the level of the orbital rim on 22 sides (58%) and between 6.1 and 11.2 mm (mean: 9.4 mm) above the supraorbital rim on 16 sides (42%). All branches of supraorbital nerve were located between 2.0 and 3.2 cm from the midline at the level of the orbital rim. In 23 cases (60%), the lateral branch of the supraorbital nerve exited the bone as two branches, usually one large and one much smaller, which can together run into the scalp without further branching. In the present anatomical study, special attention was paid to morphological details concerning the neurovascular relationship of the supraorbital region. A better understanding of the midline forehead neurovascularity should allow modification of reconstructive techniques, afford better localization of the supraorbital nerve during blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery, and reduce the incidence of postoperative hematomas and nerve injuries.  相似文献

Several transcranial surgical approaches such as frontoorbital, lateral, medial, central, inferolateral, and transmaxillary orbitotomy have been used for exposure of lesions within the orbit. During surgical approaches, detailed anatomic knowledge regarding neural, muscular, and neighboring structures for preservation of the neurovascular structures is important in avoiding traumatic retraction of the nerves of the extraocular muscles. For this study, a total of 22 formalin-fixed cadavers were dissected. Vascular structures were perfused with colored latex to facilitate their definition. In this study, the orbit was investigated in two divisions, superior and inferior. In the superior division, innervation features of the levator palpebrae superioris, the superior rectus, and superior oblique muscles were examined. In the inferior division, innervation features of the medial rectus, the lateral rectus, the inferior rectus, inferior oblique muscles, and ciliary ganglion were investigated. The diameter of the oculomotor nerve (CN3) within the superior orbital fissure was measured as 2.10 mm on the right and 2.09 mm on the left. The diameter of the superior division of the CN3 was on average 1.54 +/- 0.30 mm on the right and 1.65 +/- 0.30 on the left. The mean diameter of the inferior division was measured as 1.85 +/- 0.22 mm on the right and 1.94 +/- 0.20 on the left. In the lower wall of the orbit, different branching types of inferior division of CN3 were observed. The diameter of the trochlear nerve in the superior orbital fissure was on average 1.15 +/- 0.19 mm on the right and 1.21 +/- 0.21 mm on the left. The diameter of the abducens nerve in the superior orbital fissure was on average 1.54 +/- 0.24 mm on the right and 1.54 +/- 0.22 on the left. The number of small branches entering the muscle was on average three branches. Areas nervosa of the nerves were located in the middle one third of the muscles. In this study, detailed knowledge regarding the innervation features of extraocular muscles was attained. An understanding of the innervation features of extraocular muscles is important for the preservation of neural structures during intraorbital procedures.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging on nodal staging for head and neck cancers. This was a retrospectively analyzed single institution study. The study population consisted of 36 patients with head and neck cancers who were evaluated with PET/CT and went on to neck dissection. All of them had clinically and radiographically negative neck (N0) and each patient underwent PET/CT imaging before undergoing selective neck dissection for N0 disease. Tissues were submitted for histopathologic examination and were oriented for the pathologist to permit correlation between the histopathologic findings and the imaging results. The sizes of the lymph nodes and the maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) measured from PET/CT images were compared with the histopathologic findings. All primary tumors were visualized with PET/CT. On histopathological examination, 19 patients had positive and 17 patients had negative lymph nodes. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were used to predict the optimal corrected SUVmax cutoffs; the optimal value was 2.95 for respective outcomes of lymph node involvement. This cutoff value yielded 84.2 % sensitivity and 76.5 % specificity for nodal-level staging. PET/CT proved to be accurate in 27 (75 %) patients and inaccurate in 9 (25 %) patients. PET/CT was a valuable tool to assess nodal stage of head and neck cancers, and should be considered before surgical treatment.  相似文献

Behavioral and emotional problems experienced in early childhood may have a major impact on the development and functioning of a child, leading to a number of psychiatric problems at a later age. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of psychiatric disorders in 3-5-year-old children presenting to the Outpatients Department and in the general population, and the relationship between psychiatric disorders and the sociodemographic characteristics of the children. This was a cross-sectional study carried out in Kocaeli, Turkey. Data were collected from two different groups, one representing the general population and the other based on children presenting to the Pediatric Psychiatry Outpatients Department at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine. Of the 309 children in the study, 187 (60.5%) were boys and 122 (39.5%) were girls. Children aged 3-5 years (n = 81) were assessed by clinical examination. The mean age of the children was 3.94 +/- 0.81 years. No significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of parents' age groups, presence of consanguineous marriage, family structure, and siblings. The mothers were assessed in terms of regular visits to their physicians, major medical conditions, medication use, alcohol or tobacco consumption, and stress factors during their pregnancies. No significant difference was found between the study samples. The presence of a medical problem after birth was significantly more common in the clinical sample. Of the children in the clinical sample, 79% had at least one psychiatric problem, while the ratio for the general population sample was 41.7%.  相似文献
