Increased functional brain response towards alcohol-associated stimuli is a neural hallmark of alcohol dependence and a promising target for pharmacotherapy. For the first time, we assessed the effects of individually titrated high-dose baclofen on cue reactivity and functional connectivity in alcohol-dependent (AD) patients in a randomized controlled trial (RCT).We investigated 23 recently detoxified AD patients and 23 matched healthy controls (HC) with a cue reactivity functional magnetic resonance imaging task. Patients were further scanned at baseline without medication and during treatment with high-dose baclofen/placebo (30–270 mg/d). Analyses were conducted for alcohol cue-elicited brain response, alcohol cue-modulated and stimulus-independent functional connectivity with left ventral tegmental area (VTA) as seed region.At baseline, AD patients (N?=?23) showed increased cue-elicited brain activation in the ventral striatum (VS) compared to HC (N?=?23), which was decreased at the second scanning session compared to baseline. Patients receiving baclofen (N?=?10) showed a significant stronger decrease in cue-elicited brain activation in left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), bilateral amygdala and left VTA than patients receiving placebo (N?=?13). Treatment with baclofen further led to a decrease in alcohol cue-modulated functional connectivity between left VTA and left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as well as left medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). Regarding clinical outcome, significantly more patients of the baclofen group remained abstinent during the high-dose period.Baclofen specifically decreased cue-elicited brain responses in areas known to be involved in the processing of salient (appetitive and aversive) stimuli. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) was used to detect Ti-containing particles in heavily-used bathing areas of a river (Salt River) and five swimming pools. Ti-containing particle concentrations in swimming pools ranged from 2.8?×?103 to 4.4?×?103 particles/mL and were an order of magnitude lower than those detected in the Salt River. Measurements from the Salt River showed an 80% increase in Ti-containing particle concentration over baseline concentration during peak recreational activity (at 16:00 h) in the river. Cloud point extraction followed by transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed presence of aggregated TiO2 particles in river samples, showing morphological similarity to particles present in an over-the-counter sunscreen product. While colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates have been increasing in the general population, rates are considerably lower in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which serve a large proportion of uninsured and medically vulnerable patients. Efforts to screen eligible patients must be accelerated if we are to reach the national screening goal of 80% by 2018 and beyond. To inform this work, we conducted a survey of key informants at FQHCs in eight states to determine which evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to promote CRC screening are currently being used, and which implementation strategies are being employed to ensure that the interventions are executed as intended. One hundred and forty-eight FQHCs were invited to participate in the study, and 56 completed surveys were received for a response rate of 38%. Results demonstrated that provider reminder and recall systems were the most commonly used EBIs (44.6%) while the most commonly used implementation strategy was the identification of barriers (84.0%). The mean number of EBIs that were fully implemented at the centers was 2.4 (range 0–7) out of seven. Almost one-quarter of respondents indicated that their FQHCs were not using any EBIs to increase CRC screening. Full implementation of EBIs was correlated with higher CRC screening rates.
