Subcortical structural changes have been reported to occur in some elderly subjects with late age onset depression. Given the association between diseases affecting subcortical structures and affective disorders, this suggests that these structural changes may be involved in the etiology of late age onset depression in some patients. With the advent of Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), "in vivo" analysis of these subcortical structures is now possible. The authors report a higher occurrence of caudate (60% vs. 11%) and large deep white matter hyperintensities (60% vs. 11%) in late age onset elderly depressed subjects compared with early onset elderly depressed subjects. These results suggest that late age onset depression may be mediated by caudate and white matter structural changes in some patients.  相似文献

Studies on the lymphocyte proliferative activity of the sera from growth hormone (GH) deficient patients have resulted in contradictory observations. The ability of lymphocytes to synthesize somatomedin-C (Sm-C) and thus account for a normal proliferative activity (previously observed by us) of the GH-deficient sera was studied, by measuring Sm-C concentration in the culture medium using a standard radioimmunoassay for Sm-C. The response of lymphocytes to the mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA), as determined by the incorporation of 3H thymidine into DNA, was also studied. The Sm-C concentrations in the cultures reflected the Sm-C concentrations of the respective serum added and did not alter with significant increases in the cell number induced by PHA. The lymphocytes from GH-deficient children and normal children were indistinguishable in their ability to respond to PHA. We conclude that lymphocyte proliferation in short-term culture, was not associated with an increase in Sm-C and that in the lymphocyte proliferation assay the sera and the lymphocytes from GH-deficient children respond similarly to the sera and lymphocytes from normal children.  相似文献

We report the cytogenetic findings in nine hemangiopericytomas studied after short-term culture. Clonal chromosome abnormalities were present in four cases. One case had a simple translocation (12;19)(q13;q13.3) as the sole abnormality whereas complex and multiple chromosomal abnormalities involving almost all chromosomes in the complement characterized tumors from the three other cases.  相似文献

Forebrain heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) immunohistochemical reactivity was investigated in rats subjected to gamma knife irradiation focusing on the right caudate putamen nucleus. The forebrain sections of all experimental animals were processed with anti-HSP70 antiserum and then by avidin-biotin peroxidase complex immunohistochemistry after gamma ray irradiation with a dose of 100Gy and they each survived for different times (from 30 min to 30 days). Some neurons, glial cells, and endothelial cells were HSP70-like immunoreactivity (HSP70-LI) positive. HSP70-LI was mainly distributed in the target area of irradiation, as well as in non-target regions, e.g. the cortex, hippocampus, and hypothalamus, etc. The expression and change of HSP70-LI from 3 h to 30 days after irradiation followed the following rules: (1) Within 3 to 24 h, the dilated vessels with HSP70-LI endothelial cells were found at first, and a few lightly stained HSP70-LI neurons and glias were observed in the target and non-target regions; (2) In 3-7 days, darkly stained HSP70-LI neurons and glias were apparently increased and formed an expression peak. From 14 to 30 days, HSP70-LI cells were distinctly decreased and became weakly stained or negative. These results suggested that although the irradiation target of the gamma knife was localized, the response to irradiation occurred extensively.  相似文献

Considerable attention has been paid to the protection against x and gamma radiation but comparatively less stress has been given to the possible hazard due to external radiation from high-energy beta rays. In order to evaluate the magnitude of this hazard, central-axis depth doses at different source-to-skin distances for 90Sr-90Y and 32P sources were measured. Isodose curves in a testicular phantom for a 90Sr-90Y source were measured. The data of Haybittle for 144Ce for 10 cm SSD has been included. From the measured data, the eye-lens epithelium dose may be as high as 51%, 21.5%, and 82%, respectively, for the three sources instead of 15% as has been conventionally assumed. The isodose curves obtained in the testicular phantom indicate that an appreciable amount of testicular tissue can be subjected to radiation exposures. The radiation hazards due to high-energy beta rays are not negligible and considerable care should be exercised while using these sources.  相似文献

Serum Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) enzyme levels were estimated in 61 patients with symptoms and signs suggestive of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and correlated with "Gold standards" such as smear positivity of sputum for Acid Fast bacilli, Tuberculin skin testing and Radiological evidence. The mean ADA levels in smear and Tuberculin negative patients was 13.13 +/- 5.97 u/L, while in those with smear and/or strongly positive Tuberculin reaction, the mean levels of ADA were 33.52 +/- 15.22 u/L. The mean serum ADA levels in 25 healthy voluntary donors with no evidence of active or old Tuberculous lesion, were found to be 16.5 +/- 3.18 u/L. The specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the test was found to be 87%, 71%, 90% and 66.5% respectively. The results conclude that the serum ADA value is sufficiently useful in identifying those patients in whom the diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis should be actively considered.  相似文献
