In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of inflammatory markers to diagnose and monitor the treatment of osteomyelitis in the diabetic foot. We evaluated 35 consecutive patients admitted to our hospital with infected foot ulcers. Patients were divided in two groups based on the results of bone culture and histopathology: osteomyelitis and no osteomyelitis. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C‐reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), interleukin‐8 (IL‐8), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), monocyte chemotactic protein‐1 (MCP‐1) and macrophage inflammatory protein‐1 alpha (MIP1α) were measured at baseline after 3 and 6 weeks of standard therapy. PCT levels in the osteomyelitis group were significantly higher at baseline than in the group with no osteomyelitis (P = 0·049). There were no significant differences between the two groups in the levels of the other markers. CRP, ESR, PCT and IL‐6 levels significantly declined in the group with osteomyelitis after starting therapy, while MCP‐1 increased (P = 0·002). TNFα and MIP1α levels were below range in 80 out of 97 samples and therefore not reported. Our results suggest that PCT might be useful to distinguish osteomyelitis in infected foot ulcers. CRP, ESR, PCT and IL‐6 are valuable when monitoring the effect of therapy.  相似文献

No systematic study of antioxidant containing coatings and their anti-biofilm action has been reported so far. The utilization of antioxidants in protective coatings to inhibit marine biofilm formation is a current challenge. The aim of this preliminary study was to prepare, characterize and compare the efficiency of low adhesive siloxane composite coatings equally loaded with different antioxidants against mono-species biofilms formation. Most often participating in the marine biofilms formation, Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus was the test bacterium. Both the biofilm covered surface area (BCSA) and corrected total cell fluorescence (CTCF) (by fluorescent microscopy) were selected as the parameters for quantification of the biofilm after 1 h and 4 h incubation. Differing extents of altered surface characteristics (physical-chemical; physical-mechanical) and the specific affection of M. hydrocarbonoclasticus biofilm formation in both reduction and stimulation, were found in the studied antioxidant containing coatings, depending on the chemical nature of the used antioxidant. It was concluded that not all antioxidants reduce mono-species biofilm formation; antioxidant chemical reactivity stipulates the formation of an altered vulcanization network of the siloxane composites and thus microbial adhesion which influences the surface characteristics of the vulcanized coatings; and low surface energy combined with a low indentation elastic modulus are probably pre-requisites of low microbial adhesion.  相似文献

The morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@C nanoparticles, as well their effectiveness for organic dye adsorption and targeted destruction of carcinoma cells, were studied. The nanoparticles exhibited a high magnetic saturation value (79.4 and 63.8 emu/g, correspondingly) to facilitate magnetic separation. It has been shown that surface properties play a key role in the adsorption process. Both types of organic dyes—cationic (Rhodomine C) and anionic (Congo Red and Eosine)—were well adsorbed by the Fe3O4 nanoparticles’ surface, and the adsorption process was described by the polymolecular adsorption model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 58, 22, and 14 mg/g for Congo Red, Eosine, and Rhodomine C, correspondingly. In this case, the kinetic data were described well by the pseudo-first-order model. Carbon-coated particles selectively adsorbed only cationic dyes, and the adsorption process for Methylene Blue was described by the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 14 mg/g. For the case of Rhodomine C, the adsorption isotherm has a polymolecular character with a maximum adsorption capacity of 34 mg/g. To realize the targeted destruction of the carcinoma cells, the Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were functionalized with aptamers, and an experiment on the Ehrlich ascetic carcinoma cells’ destruction was carried out successively using a low-frequency alternating magnetic field. The number of cells destroyed as a result of their interaction with Fe3O4@C nanoparticles in an alternating magnetic field was 27%, compared with the number of naturally dead control cells of 6%.  相似文献
