Sub-cellular distribution of copper and caeruloplasmin in chemically induced tumour tissue

Copper and caeruloplasmin concentrations were determined in the subcellular fraction of tumour tissue from 15 Strain A mice bearing an induced fibrosarcoma. It was observed that copper concentration was higher in the mitochondrial fraction of tumour tissue when compared to that of tissues of similar site from normal controls. However, the caeruloplasmin concentration was lower in the various fractions of tumour tissue when compared to that of normal control tissue.     

Pre-Asiad '82 injuries in elite Indian athletes

Elite Indian athletes who were undergoing training at the NIS, Patiala for the preparation of IX Asian Games held in Delhi in 1982, suffered 317 injuries during the 14 months of training. Of the injuries 64 per cent were observed in males, while 36 per cent were observed in females. Most of the injuries seen were in the lower limbs (59.2 per cent) and when classified according to the tissues involved, most of the trauma was seen in ligaments (38 per cent). Female sprinters and male throwers contributed most injuries. On average, each athlete sustained three injuries during the total training period by which 50 days of training was lost in nursing various kinds of injuries. Preventive measures of lower limb injuries, vigorous treatment for athletes preparing for a competition and maintenance of cardiorespiratory fitness during treatment is an important task of sports physicians and coaches.     

Rapid spread of the new clone of Vibrio cholerae O1 biotype El Tor in cholera endemic areas in India.

Using molecular techniques, we investigated whether the clone of Vibrio cholerae O1 biotype El Tor which appeared in Calcutta, India, in 1994 has spread to other cholera endemic areas in the country. The ribotype of 31 of the 33 strains isolated from different parts of India during 1996 and 1997 was identical to the ribotype displayed by the new clone of V. cholerae O1 which emerged in Calcutta in 1994. Likewise, 12 of the 15 strains examined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed identical profile to that exhibited by the new clone of O1. The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of CTX genetic element of these strains also matched with the new clone of O1 which emerged after the outbreak of V. cholerae 0139 in Calcutta. However, two strains (AH042 and AH046) isolated from an outbreak in Ahmedabad (western India) showed different CTX RFLP but had the same ribotype and PFGE profile as the new clone, whereas one strain from Goa (G2) showed distinct ribotype and PFGE profile and the CTX RFLP was identical to the O1 strains which prevailed before the genesis of 0139 in Calcutta. The drug resistance pattern of most of the O1 strains examined in this study, except strain G2, was similar to that of the new clone of V. cholerae O1. None of the strains in this study carried plasmids. Molecular studies clearly show that the new expanded drug resistant clone of V. cholerae O1 has spread to all cholera endemic areas in India and also provide evidence for the evolution of new clones of the O1 serogroup.     

Immunological memory induced by genetically transduced tumor cells

Background: Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of gene-modified tumor cells for immunotherapy. Using the tumorigenic murine fibrosarcoma, MCA 106, we investigated the effects of localized interferon-γ (IFNg) secretion on tumorigenicity and on long-term memory. Methods: The murine IFNg (MuIFNg) gene was introduced into tumor cells. High and low IFNg-secreting clones were isolated. C57BL/6 mice were injected subcutaneously (s.c.) with either parental (P), high or low IFNg-secreting (H- or L-IFNg) cells, and tumor growth was assessed weekly. Spleens were harvested on different days postinjection (p.i.) to assess in vitro cytolytic activity. In parallel, tissues from injection sites were stained with macrophage-, CD4-, and CD8-detecting antibodies. Mice were injected s.c. with H-IFNg MCA106 tumor. After 150 days the animals were rechallenged s.c. with MCA106P in one leg and with irrelevant syngeneic tumor in the other. Results: Both P- and L-IFNg cells had similar growth, whereas the H-IFNg cells never grew. Only splenocytes from the H-IFNg animals showed in vitro CTL activity persisting until day 30 p.i. Histological data revealed a macrophage and CD4⁺ infiltrate much earlier in the H-IFNg group compared with the P group. Only the irrelevant, syngeneic tumor grew in animals previously injected with H-IFNg cells, whereas both P and irrelevant syngeneic tumors grew in controls. Conclusions: Transduction of MCA106 cells with the MuIFNg gene diminished in vivo tumorigenicity in proportion to the amount of IFNg secreted. Immunization with H-IFNg cells elicited a host response characterized by macrophages and CD4⁺ cells. Long-term tumor-specific memory was seen after immunization with H-IFNg cells.     

Incidence of Australia antigen in leprosy

Ninety seven male patients attending the Leprosy clinic of the Dermatology Out-patients' Department were studied for the detection of Australia antigen. There was a 20% antigen positivity in patients suffering from Lepromatous Leprosy and 5.7% in the cases with Tuberculoid Leprosy. SGPT level was found to be significant in patients with Lepromatous Leprosy having Australia antigen as compared to other groups.     

Influence of cannabis and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the biochemistry of the male reproductive organs

Studies have been made on the effect of repeated subcutaneous administration of cannabis extract and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the fructose and citric acid contents of male reproductive organs of prepubertal as well as adult albino rats. Results indicate that both the fructose and the citric acid contents of the male reproductive organs are reduced significantly by cannabis. The reduction further appears to be dose-related to the amount of THC being administered, in case of both young and adult rats. Thus the study corroborates the previously reported antitestosteronic action of the drug.     

Stapedius reflexometry: A diagnostic test of myasthenia gravis

Contraction of the stapedius muscle can be measured by electroacoustic impedance bridge. Muscle weakness and easy fatiguability which are cardinal features of myasthenia gravis (MG) are manifested by increased threshold and early decay of the stapedius reflex. This can be used as an objective test in the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis. Stapedius reflex was measured using Madsen Zo72 electroacoustic impedance bridge in 10 patients with myasthenia gravis and in an equal number of controls. The test was done before and 30 min after intramuscular injection of neostigmin.All patients with myasthenia gravis showed an elevated reflex threshold and 5 patients showed reflex decay. These findings reverted to normal after neostigmin injection. Stapedius reflexometry is a simple objective test for the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.     

Characterization of the phage-specific transfer RNA molecules coded by cholera phage phi 149

Aminoacylation of tRNA isolated from choleraphage phi 149-infected cells with individual 3H-labeled L-amino acids followed by hybridization with phage DNA revealed that the phage encodes tRNAs specific for arginine, proline, glycine, isoleucine, serine, valine, tyrosine, histidine, lysine, leucine, tryptophan, and aspartic acid. Aminoacylation of phage-coded tRNAs isolated from phage DNA-RNA hybrids also confirmed this observation except for tryptophan.
