The 14-carbon in animal tissues records the time that the tissues are formed; since the 1960s, using the “bomb curve” for 14C, the age of animal death can be determined accurately. Using animal tissue samples of known collection and formation dates for calibration, we determine the age of ivory samples from four ivory seizures made by law enforcement agencies between 2017 and 2019. The 14C measurements from these seizures show that most ivory in the illegal wildlife trade is from animals from recent poaching activities. However, one seizure has a large fraction of ivory that is more than 30 y old, consistent with markings on the tusks indicating they were derived from a government stockpile.  相似文献

ObjectivesMusculoskeletal disorders (MSD) represent a major public health issue, affecting more then 40 million European workers in 2017. The overall aging of the working population is expected to increase the burden of disease, but temporal changes in exposures or diagnosis may also drive the global trends in MSD. We therefore conducted a systematic review to summarize the evidence on the role of demographic and temporal changes in the occurrence of MSD.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review of articles reporting temporal trends in MSD in the general working-age population. Only articles controlling for age in the analysis were included. The risk of bias was assessed. The main indicators extracted were age-controlled time trends in MSD incidence or prevalence.ResultsAmong 966 articles, 16 fulfilled the inclusion criteria, representing 23 results according to the indicators extracted. No study was found with a high risk of bias. Results presenting time trends in prevalence were found in 12 studies and incidence in 11. After controlling for age, the reported temporal trends varied, mostly between non-monotonic changes (N=12/23) and increases (N=10/23). One article also highlighted an increase among women and non-monotonic changes among men (N=1/23). Several factors other than aging were suggested to explain temporal trends in MSD, mainly trends in obesity, changing occupational exposures, and cultural factors regarding pain tolerance.ConclusionThis review shows that different kind of factors in addition to aging may contribute to varying or increasing trends in MSD. This review also highlighted the scarcity of evidence regarding time trends in the burden of MSD and their underlying causes.  相似文献

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns modified work environments, lifestyles, and food consumption. Eating habits and mood changes in a French population during the first lockdown were examined using an online self-reported questionnaire with REDCap software through the COVISTRESS.ORG website. In 671 French participants, the main changes during lockdown were increased stress levels (64 [23; 86] vs. 3 [0; 18]) and sedentary behavior (7 [4; 9] vs. 5 [3; 8] hours per day), a deterioration in sleep quality (50 [27; 83] vs. 70 [48; 94]) and mood (50 [30; 76] vs. 78 [50; 92]), and less physical activity (2.0 [0.5; 5.0] vs. 3.5 [2.0; 6.0]). Mood was modified, with more anger (56 [39; 76] vs. 31 [16; 50]), more sadness (50 [34; 72] vs. 28 [16; 50]), more agitation (50 [25; 66] vs. 43 [20; 50]), and more boredom (32 [7; 60] vs. 14 [3; 29]). A total of 25% of the participants increased their consumption of alcoholic beverages, 29% their consumption of sugary foods, and 26% their consumption of cocktail snacks. A multiple-correspondence analysis highlights four different profiles according to changes in eating habits, food consumption, lifestyle, and mood. In conclusion, eating habits and lifestyle changes during lockdown periods should be carefully monitored to promote healthy behaviors.  相似文献

Health-related concerns about cyanobacteria-laden sludge of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) have been raised in the past few years. Microscopic taxonomy, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and microcystin (MC) measurement were applied to study the fate of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins after controlled sludge storage (stagnation) in the dark in a full-scale drinking water treatment plant within 7 to 38 days. For four out of eight dates, cyanobacterial cell growth was observed by total taxonomic cell counts during sludge stagnation. The highest observed cell growth was 96% after 16 days of stagnation. Cell growth was dominated by potential MC producers such as Microcystis, Aphanocapsa, Chroococcus, and Dolichospermum. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing unveiled that stagnation stress shifts the cyanobacterial communities from the stress-sensitive Nostocales (e.g., Dolichospermum) order towards less compromised orders and potential MC producers such as Chroococcales (e.g., Microcystis) and Synechococcales (e.g., Synechococcus). The relative increase of cyanotoxin producers presents a health challenge when the supernatant of the stored sludge is recycled to the head of the DWTP or discharged into the source. These findings emphasize the importance of a strategy to manage cyanobacteria-laden sludge and suggest practical approaches should be adopted to control health/environmental impacts of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in sludge.  相似文献

Pasireotide is a novel, multireceptor-targeted somatostatin analogue with high affinity for sst(1,2,3) and sst(5) under clinical evaluation in tumors of neuroendocrine origin, including Cushing's disease, acromegaly, and neuroendocrine tumors. In this phase I, open-label, multicenter study, the pharmacokinetics and safety of a single subcutaneous (SC) injection of pasireotide 600 μg were evaluated in adults with normal hepatic function (n = 15) and mild (n = 6), moderate (n = 7), or severe hepatic impairment (n = 6). Following a single dose of pasireotide SC 600 μg, there were no significant differences in the plasma exposure of pasireotide between participants with normal hepatic function or mild hepatic impairment. Subjects with moderate and severe hepatic impairment showed an increase in AUC(∞) by 56% and 42%, respectively; this increase was 60% and 79% respectively, after adjusting for differences in age, BMI, and baseline serum albumin level between treatment groups. The incidence and severity of adverse events were similar across cohorts, with no clinically relevant differences in type or frequency of adverse events between cohorts. In conclusion, a single dose of pasireotide SC 600 μg was well tolerated in subjects with hepatic impairment. Drug exposure in subjects with mild hepatic impairment was similar to that seen in healthy volunteers, whereas subjects with moderate and severe hepatic impairment experienced higher exposure to pasireotide. Adjustment of the pasireotide dose may be required for patients with moderate and severe hepatic impairment.  相似文献

Summary Citalopram (CIT), is a selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake blocker and a clinically effective antidepressant. The present electrophysiological studies were undertaken to investigate in vivo the acute and long-term effects of CIT administration on 5-HT neurotransmission. In a first series of experiments, a single dose of CIT (0.05–0.5 mg/kg) was administered intravenously to naive rats while recording the activity of a 5-HT-containing neuron in the nucleus raphe dorsalis. A dose-response relationship of the inhibitory effect of CIT on the firing activity of 5-HT neurons was obtained with an ED50 of 0.23±0.03 mg/kg. In a second series of experiments, rats were treated with CIT (20 mg/kg/day, i.p.) for 2, 7 and 14 days. In rats treated for 2 days, there was a marked reduction in the firing activity of 5-HT neurons in the nucleus raphe dorsalis; there was a partial recovery after 7 days and a complete recovery after 14 days of treatment. The response of 5-HT neurons to intravenously administered LSD was decreased in rats treated for 14 days with CIT, indicating a desensitization of the somatodendritic 5-HT autoreceptor. In a third series of experiments, carried out in rats treated with CIT (20 mg/kg/day, i.p.) for 14 days, the suppression of firing activity of CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons produced by microiontophoretically-applied 5-HT and by the electrical activation of the ascending 5-HT pathway was measured. Long-term treatment with CIT did not modify the responsiveness of these neurons to microiontophoretically-applied 5-HT; however, the effect of the electrical activation of the ascending 5-HT pathway on these same neurons was enhanced. To determine if 5-HT reuptake blockade could be responsible for this enhancement, CIT (1 mg/kg) was injected intravenously in naive rats while stimulating the ascending 5-HT pathway; it failed to modify the effectiveness of the stimulation. To assess the involvement of the 5-HT terminal autoreceptor, methiothepin, a 5-HT autoreceptor antagonist, was injected intravenously (1 mg/kg) in naive rats and in rats treated for 14 days with CIT while stimulating the ascending 5-HT pathway. Methiothepin enhanced the effect of the stimulation in naive rats but failed to do so in the CIT-treated rats. It is concluded that long-term CIT treatment enhances 5-HT neurotransmission by desensitizing both the somatodendritic and terminal 5-HT autoreceptors.  相似文献
