Summary Forty-nine out of 54 male workers engaged in the production of an epoxy compound, t-methyl-3-phenylglycidate, showed skin symptoms in varing degrees that may be due to the skin-irritative effect of the compound. The exposed workers were also shown to have subjective symptoms which may be related to the irritative property of the compound on surface tissue. Laboratory examinations on the blood obtained from the exposed workers showed significantly higher values of leukocyte concentration as compared with the non-exposed controls. This was chiefly caused by the increase of neutrophilic granulocytes and T-cell lymphocytes. Serum IgA levels of the exposed workers were shown to be significantly lower than those of the control group. Hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value and red cell count of the exposed workers remained at the same level as those of the control subjects. Liver or kidney damage was not found in biochemical analyses on the sera of exposed workers.  相似文献

Summary We describe two patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who had developed progressive external ophthalmoplegia of a predominantly supranuclear type while they survived on respirators, and displayed histopathological abnormalities both typical and atypical of ALS. Patient 1 was a 43-year-old man with ALS of 5-year duration, who had initially exhibited fulminant ALS, and remained on a respirator for 4 years. Patient 2 was a 51-year-old man with ALS of 13-year duration, who remained on a respirator for 8 years. Both patients died in a totally locked-in state. Autopsy of both patients revealed not only histopathological abnormalities consistent with ALS, but also multisystem degeneration which involved the pontine tegmentum, substantia nigra, Clarke's dorsal nuclei and spinocerebellar tracts. In addition, Patient 2 displayed intracyto-plasmic neuronal basophilic inclusion bodies which exhibited marked immunoreactivity to anti-ubiquitin antibodies. Our case reports indicate that the longer survival which is possible through the use of respirators may make one subgroup of ALS patients prone to develop atypical clinical and neuropathological features which are not observed during the natural cours of ALS.Supported by a Grant-in-Aid from the Research Committee of CNS Degenerative Diseases, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan, and by a Grant from Nihon University School of Medicine, Tokyo  相似文献

Amyloid depositions of pancreatic islets were investigated with electron microscopy in a case of type III glycogenosis.

Beta cells adjoining small amyloid depositions were shown to have cytoplasmic invaginations where closely packed amyloid fibrils were disclosed regularly orientated amyloid bundles. In the cytoplasm of the beta cells, some membrane-bounded vesicles contained amyloid fibrils and a few beta granules directly transformed into the fibrils within the vesicles.

These findings indicate that, at least in this case, the beta cells play a crucial role in the formation of insular amyloid.  相似文献

Senile aortic amyloidosis in 224 autopsy cases over 40 years was investigated comparing cardiac and pancreatic amyloidosis in them. A total of 176 cases of aortic amyloidosis was found for an average incidence of 79%. Under the 5th decade the incidence was 51% and it rose sharply with age and reached 95% in over the 8th decade. The incidence of cardiac amyloidosis also increased with age, but it was always higher in the aorta. Aortic and cardiac amyloid were both positive in the DMAB method for tryptophan. The major part exposed to amyloidosis in the aorta was the media. The medial amyloid consisted of numerous minute deposits and had no relation to atherosclerosis. Some comments about the pathogenesis of senile amyloidosis were also mentioned.  相似文献

Ossification or calcification of the ligamentum flavum (LF) is relatively common in the middle and lower cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine but extremely rare in the upper cervical region. This clinical fact suggests that there exist local factors promoting or preventing ossification or calcification of LF. However, little is known about the differences in the ultrastructure and cellular alterations of the LF between the different spinal levels, even in the cervical spine. With electron microscopy, we examined samples of LF collected surgically from the upper and lower cervical spine regions; we then studied the apoptotic appearance of ligament cells using a preferential labeling method. We found direct evidence of apoptosis of ligament cells in the LF. Apoptosis was more apparent in the upper region samples than in the lower region samples. The spaces around the normal fibroblasts were filled with thick collagen fibrils, but the collagen fibrils disappeared around the apoptotic bodies and thin fibrils were formed. The difference of the level of apoptosis may correlate to the ultrastructual difference of LF, and our data will benefit further investigations seeking to clarify the mechanism of various pathological conditions in the human LF.  相似文献

Summary In order to explore the relationship between the expression of cancer-associated glycolipids such as sialylated Lex (SLEX) and sialylated Lea (SLEA) and the histological subtypes of lung cancers, 30 cases of small cell carcinoma (SCC) and 47 cases of non-small cell carcinoma (non-SCC) were examined immunohistochemically using monoclonal antibodies reacting with SLEX and SLEA. The forty-seven cases of non-SCC included 20 cases of adenocarcinoma, 20 of squamous cell carcinoma and 7 of large cell carcinoma. Tumour cells of most non-SCCs expressed SLEX and SLEA. In adenocarcinomas, the number of tumour cells having SLEX and SLEA was more than that of squamous cell carcinomas, large cell carcinomas and SCC. In SCC, 14 of the 30 cases were found to be positive for both antigens. Although the cancer cells of 11 cases of 17 intermediate cell type SCC had both antigens, the cells of only 3 of 13 oat cell tumours expressed SLEX and SLEA. The present study shows that SLEX and SLEA are useful markers for lung adenocarcinomas, that most cases of intermediate cell type of SCCs have characteristics similar to non-SCC but that many oat cell tumours lack them.  相似文献

We describe the case of a 40-year-old man whose disease was initially diagnosed as acute myelocytic leukemia. The patient achieved remission with chemotherapy, but relapsed shortly afterwards with an acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. He died of intracranial bleeding. Karyotyping analysis showed a del(9p?) as a common abnormality in the leukemic cells at onset and relapse. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis demonstrated allelic loss of the CDKN2A gene in cells from both stages of the disease. At relapse the leukemia cells had additional abnormalities such as add(1)(p36) and del(12)(p11). We postulate that the loss of CDKN2A is involved in leukemogenesis but does not determine the lineage of the leukemic cells. Instead, abnormalities of genes at 1p36, 12p11, or both may be involved in driving a lymphoid phenotype.  相似文献

The gene Bcl11b, which encodes zinc finger proteins, and its paralog, Bcl11a, are associated with immune-system malignancies. We have generated Bcl11b-deficient mice that show a block at the CD4-CD8- double-negative stage of thymocyte development without any impairment in cells of B- or gammadelta T cell lineages. The Bcl11b-/- thymocytes showed unsuccessful recombination of V(beta) to D(beta) and lacked the pre-T cell receptor (TCR) complex on the cell surface, owing to the absence of Tcrb mRNA expression. In addition, we saw profound apoptosis in the thymus of neonatal Bcl11b-/- mice. These results suggest that Bcl11b is a key regulator of both differentiation and survival during thymocyte development.  相似文献
