This study examined the emotional changes that occur during the trimesters of pregnancy. Two hundred eighty-two women were asked, one day after giving birth, to indicate at what frequency they had experienced various symptoms during each trimester of pregnancy and to fill out the Repression Sensitization scale (Byrne, Barry, & Nelson, 1963). Results showed that while women's feelings during the first trimester are characterized by symptoms related to physiological changes (e.g., nausea, vomiting, dizziness), during the last trimester anxiety and emotional distress become the most significant symptoms. The level at which these symptoms were experienced was affected by the subject's socioeconomic level, number of previous births (primaparae or multiparae), and her personality type (repressor or sensitizer).  相似文献

Multiple studies have documented an increased risk of secondary malignancies in patients receiving alkylating agents. Secondary leukemia following chemotherapy accounts for about 20% of all secondary neoplasms; most are acute nonlymphocytic. Secondary acute lymphoblastic leukemia has rarely been reported in either adult or childhood cancer. We report the development of acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia in a child following successful treatment of a paravertebral embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERS). Southern blot analysis of DNA extracted from the T-cell lymphoblasts, using probes homologous to loci on the short arm of chromosome 11; P-calcitonin, P40.1 and H-ras, did not demonstrate the chromosomal loss of heterozygosity (LOH), a common feature of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. The data presented support the assumption that de novo leukemia emerged following treatment of the primary malignancy.  相似文献

An oscillatory mode of activity is a basic operational mode of the hippocampus. Such activity involves the concurrent expression of several rhythmic processes, of which theta (4-15 Hz) and gamma (20-80 Hz) oscillations are prominent and considered to be important for cognitive processing. In an experimental model that preserves the intrinsic network oscillator, exhibiting the dependency on cholinergic inputs and consequent expression of concurrent theta and gamma oscillations, we investigate the intrinsic mechanisms underlying such integrated hippocampal network responses. This experimental framework is used here to examine the currently prevailing dogma, that interneurons control hippocampal oscillations. The spontaneous response of individual pyramidal cells (in areas CA3 and CA1) and interneurons (area CA3), during oscillatory activity, was monitored intracellularly. Particular attention was given to the initiation of interneuron discharge during oscillations, to the impact of the synaptic output of discharging interneurons on the oscillatory activity, and to the time at which interneurons discharge in relation to the oscillatory cycles. Analysis of the spontaneous patterns of activity in individual interneurons and their outcome, during the oscillatory activity, revealed that interneuron activity is incompatible with initiating, pacing or determining the oscillatory frequencies, although contributing to the apparent rhythmic patterns. Moreover, our results show that non-interneuronal members of the network control interneuron activity. We therefore suggest that the activity of the excitatory cells, i.e., principle cells, is critical toward the initiation, pacing and synchronization of intrinsic hippocampal network oscillations.  相似文献

Methotrexate can influence the central nervous system through several metabolic toxic pathways. These effects can be categorized as immediate, acute to subacute, or chronic neurologic syndromes. The acute to subacute syndrome occurs frequently in acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment protocols, generally manifesting with focal neurologic signs and changes seen on magnetic resonance imaging and single photon emission computed tomography. While in some patients the neurotoxicity is transient and benign and allows for continuation of chemotherapy, in others it can be quite severe and debilitating, leading to permanent neurologic deficits. The need to modify the treatment protocols when neurotoxicity appears is not fully established. It is also unknown whether the use of sufficient amounts of leucovorin can overcome the toxic effects of the drug.  相似文献

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is not eliminated from patients even after years of antiretroviral therapy, apparently due to the presence of latently infected cells. The amygdala is known to regulate neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to a variety of stimuli. Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) is the common cause of viral encephalitis, manifested by hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation, fever, hypermotor activity and aggression. We examined here the role of the central amygdala (cAMG) in regulating the HPA axis function, febrile and behavioral responses to HSV-1 infection in rats. Bilateral electrolytic lesions were performed in the cAMG. HSV-1 encephalitis was induced by intracerebroventricular (ICV) inoculation of purified virions. Motor activity and body temperature were examined by a biotelemetric system. ICV inoculation of HSV-1 caused a marked time-dependent increase in serum corticotropin (ACTH) and corticosterone at 4 and 24 h post-infection. These responses were attenuated in rats with bilateral lesions of the cAMG. HSV-1 infection induced fever, motor hyperactivity and aggressive behavior. These responses were also attenuated in rats with cAMG lesions. The cAMG plays an important role in mediating the neuroendocrine, febrile and behavioral responses to HSV-1 infection.  相似文献
