Kinetics of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow of hepatectomized mice

Two thirds of the liver was removed from (CBA×C57BL/6j)F₁ female mice. On the 5th day after the operation a significant increase was observed in the number of endogenous colonies in the spleen of the partially hepatectomized animals. This increase was not connected with a change in the number of stem cells in the bone marrow, for partial hepatectomy at different times after the operation did not affect the number of colony-forming units in the bone marrow.Laboratory of Virology, Oncologic Scientific Center, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Effect of Parmidine (pyridinolcarbamate) on platelet aggregation,blood coagulation,and fibrinolysis

The effect of Parmidine (pyridinolcarbamate) on platelet aggregation, blood coagulation, and fibrinolysis was studied in rabbits. After direct addition of Parmidine to platelet-enriched plasma aggregation of the platelets produced by serotonin (5-HT) and adrenalin was reduced. After oral administration of Parmidine to animals, aggregation induced by ADP, 5-HT, and adrenalin was inhibited, blood coagulation was reduced, and fibrinolysis was accelerated.Laboratory of Pharmacology, S. Effect of potassium iodide and perchlorate on the secretion of thyroid hormones

The effect of potassium iodide and perchlorate was studied on parameters characterizing the secretion of thyroid hormones: the cyclic AMP level in the thyroid gland tissue and the number of intracellular colloid drops during stimulation with thyroid hormones. Excess of iodide was shown to depress these indices whereas perchlorate prevented the inhibitory effect of iodide. The results support the view that the adenylate-cyclase system of the thyroid gland is sensitive to the organic iodine concentration. Excess of iodide evidently reduces the ability of perchlorate to affect its concentration in the gland, so that the process of organification of iodine and the secretion of thyroid hormones are maintained at the optimal level.Translated from Byulleten' Éksperimental'noi Biologii i Meditsiny, Vol. 86, No. 12, pp. 653–655, December, 1978.     

Classification of instruments for cryosurgery

Conclusions 1. Cryosurgical instruments can be divided into passive and autonomous cryoprobes and cryoprobes with delivery of the coolant from a separate reservoir. 2. To freeze easily accessible organs and tissues to a depth of 5 mm it is best to use passive cryoprobes with a copper core. 3. Autonomous cryoprobes can be used for freezing organs and tissues having a volume not more than 10–25 cm³. Cryoprobes with delivery of the coolant from a separate reservoir must be used when freezing a larger volume. Role of adrenoreceptors of Ehrlich's ascitic carcinoma in the regulation of proliferative processes by adrenergic ligands

Two categories of specific binding sites for the β-adrenergic ligand³H-dihydroalprenolol have been revealed on the cells of Ehrlich's ascitic carcinoma. The synthesis of DNA in the tumor cell culture possessed different sensitivities to α- and β-adrenergic preparations. Propranolol, a β-adrenoblocker, suppressed DNA synthesis most intensively in concentrations approaching the therapeutic ones. It is hypothesized that β-adrenoreceptors participate predominantly in the regulation of proliferative processes in Ehrlich's ascitic carcinoma by adrenergic ligands. Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers, 4. Study of crystalline and liquid-crystalline comb-like polymers with mesogenic side groups by IR spectroscopy

The IR spectra (in the region of 400–3600 cm^?1) of comb-like polymers in crystalline, liquid-crystalline, and fluid isotropic phases were studied, and the effect of the chemical structure of the long side chains on the crystalline and liquid-crystalline states were examined. The spectroscopic criteria of phase transitions in comb-like polymers were established and the fragments of the side chains involved in the formation of the liquid-crystalline phase, were determined.
