Adenine nucleotides in cultured brain cells after exposure to methyl mercury and triethyl lead

To obtain more information on the biochemical background, of methyl mercury (MeHg) and triethyl lead (Et3Pb) toxicity, the doses which were needed to alter the cellular content of adenine nucleotides were compared to doses which induced morphological alterations. Three-week-old cultures of brain cells from new-born rat were incubated for 5-60 min. with 28, 16, and 8 X 10(-6) M MeHg or with 3 X 10(-6) M Et3Pb in the nutrition medium. MeHg at 28 and 16 X 10(-6) M simultaneously changed the cell shape and reduced both the cellular content of adenine nucleotides and the relative level of ATP. In cells treated with 16 X 10(-6) M MeHg, a cellular increase in inosine and hypoxanthine and an unaltered content of adenine nucleotides in the nutrition medium, points to an intracellular degradation of adenine nucleotides. Incubation with 8 X 10(-6) M MeHg during the first hour of incubation, did not change the content of adenine nucleotides, however, MeHg induced a slowly progressing degeneration of cellular extensions. 3 X 10(-6) M Et3Pb induced morphological alterations but no changes in cellular nucleotide levels. The results show that morphological alterations occur in MeHg and Et3Pb treated cultures at concentrations of the compounds which are too low to change the content and composition of cellular adenine nucleotides.     

A clinical study of nasopharyngeal masses

Out of 36511 patients attending the ENT OHD of R. G,. Aur Medical Callege & Hospital. Kolkata, in one year 0.08% patients were found tuning naspharyngeal mass. 30 cases of nasopharyngeal mass were studied. The peak incidence of nasopharyngeal mass was in the age group between II to 20 years (40%). The incidence in males (73%) was more than females(27%). The maximum ineldence was found among students (74%). Commonest ntuopharyngeal nuns teas antrochoanal polyp (30%). Next commlon masses were adenoids (23%)Juvenile angwfibroma(20%) and nasophartngeal carcinoma (13%). Nasal obstruction was the main presenting symptom(83%) followed by epistaxis (40%).     

Carcinogenicity of dextran sulfate sodium in relation to its molecular weight

The carcinogenicity of dextran and 3 kinds of dextran sulfate sodium with different molecular weights and almost the same sulfur content were compared in ACI rats. Dextran sulfate sodium of molecular weight 54,000 showed a strong carcinogenic activity when it was given orally as 2.5% diet, whereas dextran sulfate sodium of molecular weight 520,000 and 9500 and dextran showed no significant carcinogenicity, i.e. the peak of carcinogenic activity of dextran sulfate sodium appeared at molecular weight 54,000, and dextran sulfates with larger or smaller molecular weights had no carcinogenic activity.     

Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT imaging of the central nervous system in tuberous sclerosis

Tc-99m HMPAO was used to evaluate cerebral perfusion in a patient with tuberous sclerosis. The SPECT images demonstrated reduced HMPAO uptake in regions corresponding with MRI-confirmed locations of cortical tubers. These results indicate that the lesions are characterized by vascular perfusion deficits and support the hypothesis that cortical tubers result from developmental abnormalities of the embryonic central nervous system.     

Use of the inferior epigastric artery as a free graft for myocardial revascularization

From March 1990 through January 1991, 47 patients undergoing myocardial revascularization had one (37) or both (10) inferior epigastric arteries (IEA) used as a conduit for bypass with 62 distal anastomoses. The internal thoracic artery (ITA) was used bilaterally in 41 patients and unilaterally in 6 with 100 distal anastomoses. Five patients had a single saphenous vein graft. In total, 167 anastomoses (3.55 per patient) were performed. Single IEA grafts were harvested through a paramedian incision and bilateral grafts, a midline incision. Harvest time was 36.5 minutes for IEA grafts and 29.6 minutes for ITA grafts (p less than 0.0001). Graft length was 11.9 cm for IEA grafts and 16.5 cm for ITA grafts (p less than 0.0001). Distal graft diameter was 2.0 mm for IEA grafts and 2.1 mm for ITA grafts (p less than 0.01). Graft flow was 49.7 mL/min for IEA grafts and 48.7 mL/min for ITA grafts. Microscopic assessment of segments of both the IEA and ITA from 14 patients revealed similar internal elastic laminae and an equal number of fenestrations. Combined intimal and medial thickness was comparable in both conduits. Medial elastic tissue was more prominent in ITA grafts and lacking in eight of the 14 IEA grafts. Gross plaque formation was noted in the proximal 1 to 3 cm of 50% of IEA grafts, but the lumen was not compromised and microscopic thickening was minimal. An unexpected finding was medial calcifications (M?nckeberg's disease) in two of the 14 IEAs without associated atherosclerosis. There was one hospital death, one abdominal wound infection, and one instance of fat necrosis superficial to the sternum.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
