Some cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection presented renal function impairment after the first MERS-CoV patient died of progressive respiratory and renal failure. Thus, MERS-CoV may include kidney tropism. However, reports about the natural courses of MERS-CoV infection in terms of renal complications are scarce. We examined 30 MERS-CoV patients admitted to National Medical Center, Korea. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the serum creatinine (SCr), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urine dipstick tests, urinary protein quantitation (ACR or PCR), and other clinical parameters in all patients. Two consecutive results of more than trace (or 1+) of albumin and blood on dipstick test occurred in 18 (60%) (12 [40%]) and 22 (73.3%) (19 [63.3%]) patients, respectively. Fifteen (50.0%) patients showed a random urine ACR or PCR more than 100 mg/g Cr. Eight (26.7%) patients showed acute kidney injury (AKI), and the mean and median durations to the occurrence of AKI from symptom onset were 18 and 16 days, respectively. Old age was associated with a higher occurrence of AKI in the univariate analysis (HR [95% CI]: 1.069 [1.013-1.128], P = 0.016) and remained a significant predictor of the occurrence of AKI after adjustment for comorbidities and the application of a mechanical ventilator. Diabetes, AKI, and the application of a continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) were risk factors for mortality in the univariate analysis (HR [95% CI]: diabetes; 10.133 [1.692-60.697], AKI; 12.744 [1.418-114.565], CRRT; 10.254 [1.626-64.666], respectively). Ovarian microcystic stromal tumor (MCST) is a very rare neoplasm; hence, its nomenclature was recently designated as “Distinctive morphologic and immunohistochemical features” in 2009. Its exact origin, etiological genetic alterations, and background are not yet clearly known. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant disease that leads to development of colorectal polyps via germ‐line mutations of the APC gene on chromosome 5q21~22. In this study, we report a 40‐year‐old female patient who had ovarian MCST and FAP. On sequencing the APC gene in ovarian MSCT, we detected a novel somatic mutation of the APC gene in exon 11, with a heterozygous deletion at nucleotide position c.1540delG (p.Ala514 Profs*9). Mutations of β‐catenin (CTNNB1) and FOXL2 were not detected. Although one case demonstrating involvement of Wnt/β‐catenin in ovarian MCST associated with FAP has been presented previously, no detailed information was provided. In patients with aortic regurgitation (AR), a precise preoperative assessment of aortic valve (AV) pathology is important if AV repair or sparing operation is an alternative option. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) for evaluating the AR mechanism compared with surgical inspection. 59 patients with AR who underwent AV surgery and preoperative cardiac CT were evaluated. AR mechanism was classified into type 1 (aortic dilatation or cusp perforation), type 2 (prolapsed cusp) and type 3 (cusp retraction). Agreement between CT and surgical inspection was obtained. Correlation between aortic regurgitant orifice (ARO) and imaging parameters were evaluated. On surgical inspection, type 1 AR was noted in 22 patients, type 2 in 16 and type 3 in 21. Agreement regarding the AR mechanism on CT was excellent (intra-class correlation coefficient, 0.81). At the patient level, the Cohen’s κ value for CT findings with surgical inspection was of 0.89. At the cusp level, moderate agreement was noted between CT and surgical inspection. In the per-cusp analysis, CT had a sensitivity of 72.6%, specificity of 85.1%, positive predictive value of 73.8% and negative predictive value of 84.3% for the detection of aortic cusp abnormality. The diameter, perimeter and area of aortic annulus had moderate correlation with ARO (r?=?0.54–0.66, P?<?0.001). Near-infrared (NIR) photoswitching transistors have been fabricated using a hybrid structure of zinc oxide (ZnO) and quantum-dots (QDs). The ZnO active layer was prepared using a solution process, while colloidal QDs were inserted between a silicon dioxide (SiO2) gate insulator and a ZnO active layer. The small band gap QDs (1.59 eV) were used to absorb low-energy NIR photons, generate photo-excited carriers, and inject them into the conduction band of the ZnO film. The device with the interfacial QDs induced photocurrents upon exposure to 780 nm-wavelength light. The photoresponsivity of the ZnO/QD device was 0.06 mA W−1, while that of the device without QDs was 1.7 × 10−5 mA W−1, which indicated that the small band gap QDs enabled a photo-induced current when exposed to NIR light. Furthermore, a photoinverter was prepared which was composed of a ZnO/QDs phototransistor and a load resistor. Photoswitching characteristics indicated that the photoinverter was well modulated by a periodic light signal of 780 nm in wavelength. The results demonstrate a useful way to fabricate NIR optoelectronics based on ZnO and QDs.A near-infrared photoinverter was fabricated based on ZnO and quantum-dots.
