Conjugate gaze is often defined as the equal angle rotation of the two eyes. For fixation at far distances, the optical axes are parallel and conjugacy is defined irrespective of the coordinate system. For nearby or finite fixation distances, the evaluation of conjugacy for many gaze postures depends on the coordinate system used to measure it. For example, if the eye is elevated or depressed and the eye is rotated about a vertical axis, the intersections of lines of sight with a tangent screen will describe either straight lines for arcs depending on whether the vertical axis is fixed with respect to the head or to the eye. Because of the horizontal separation of the two eyes, the binocular fixation of near targets at tertiary positions of gaze will require a vertical vergence component for head-referenced but not eye-referenced measurements. The vertical gaze alignment of three human subjects was measured as they viewed targets placed at secondary and tertiary eye positions at two different distances. Vertical vergence was either held open or closed-loop. The lines of sight were found lo intersect (i.e. vertical gaze was aligned) regardless of target position or viewing condition. 相似文献

Although natural family planning (NFP) is a form of contraception without ostensible maternal risks (other than pregnancy), potential fetal risks could exist if aging gametes are involved in inadvertent fertilization. In the following report, we first review animal studies firmly establishing that aging sperm and aging oocytes (delayed fertilization) cause chromosomal abnormalities in mammals and other species. We next review human studies associating decreased coital frequency with trisomy and studies of NFP populations that generally show no increased frequency of anomalous offspring or spontaneous abortions. Our rationale for initiating an international cohort study is presented, along with the experimental design selected. Preliminary findings indicate that the experimental design chosen will indeed provide information allowing NFP safety to be assessed definitively.
Resumen Aunque la planificación familiar natural (PFN) es una forma de anticoncepción sin riesgos maternos ostensibles, (fuera del embarzo) podrían existir posibles riesgos fetales di gametos que están envejeciendo son inadvertidamente fertilizados. La primera revisión de estudios en animales establece firmemente que espermatozoides y oocytos en envejecimiento (fertilización tardía), causan anormalidades cromosómicas en mamíferos y otras especies. A continuación revisamos estudios en humanos que asocian la disminución de la frecuencia coital con trisomía, y estudios de poblaciones practicando PFN que generalmente no muestran aumento en la frecuencia de descendientes anormales o de abortos espontáneos. Presentamos nuestras razones para iniciar el estudio de una cohorte internactional ademas del diseño experimental elegido proveerá información alegando que la inocuidad de la PFN sea definitivamente valorada.
Resumé Bien que le planning familial naturel (PFN-NFP) soit une forme de contraception ne présentant pas de risques manifestes pour la mère (autres qu'une grossesse), il pourrait y avoir des risques potentiels pour le foetus si des gamètes âgés sont par inadvertance fécondés. Nous passons en revue tout d'abord des études effectuées sur des animaux, établissant fermement que le sperme veillissant et les oocytes vieillissants (fécondation retardée) provoquent des anomalies chromosomales chez les mammifères et d'autres espèces. Nous examinons ensuite des études sur des humains, qui associent diminution coitale et trisomie, et des études de populations pratiquant le PFN, qui ne révèlent généralement pas de fréquence accrue d'enfants anormaux ou d'avortements spontanés. Cette communication expose la raison pour laquelle nous avons entrepris une étude sur une cohorte internationale, ainsi que le concept d'expérimentation que nous avons choisi. Les constatations préliminaires indiquent que ce concept fournira véritablement des informations qui permettront d'évaluer de façon définitive la sécurité du PFN.相似文献

Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) successfully differentiated homoeologous genomes in the interspecific hybrid Allium cepa × fistulosum, thus allowing the detection of reciprocal crossover events as label exchanges in separating anaphase I chromosomes. Three of the eight chromosome pairs were positively identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to rDNA sequences. There was a general similarity of the GISH-based label exchange frequencies and metaphase I chiasma frequencies, but with a 20% deficit of chiasmata. Reasons for this apparent deficit are discussed. 1. The angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist, losartan (10 mg/kg) was infused intravenously into nine chronically catheterized fetal sheep (125–132 days gestation). Losartan reduced the fetal systolic (P < 0.01) and diastolic (P < 0.01) pressor response to 5 μg angiotensin II (AngII) i.v. from 27.4 ± 1.5 to 7.4 ± 0.9 and from 17.5 ± 1.3 to 5.4 ± 0.6 mmHg, respectively, after 1h and to 6.1 ± 0.5 and 4.4 ± 0.5 mmHg, respectively, after 2h. Maternal pressor responses to 5 μg AngII i.v. were unchanged. Fetal mean arterial pressure decreased (P < 0.05) after losartan administration, but fetal heart rate did not change. 2. Fetal haematocrit increased (P < 0.05), fetal PO2 decreased (P < 0.01), PCO2 did not change and pH decreased (P < 0.01), as did plasma bicarbonate levels (P < 0.01) following administration of losartan. Thus, losartan induced a fetal metabolic acidosis. 3. Fetal placental blood flow did not change following administration of losartan. In the fetal kidney, losartan caused a decrease in vascular resistance (P < 0.01) and an increase in blood flow (P < 0.05). Glomerular filtration rate decreased (P < 0.05); thus, filtration fraction decreased (P < 0.01). There was no change in the fractional reabsorption of sodium and glomerulotubular balance was maintained. Free water clearance decreased (P < 0.01) and became negative. Urine flow decreased (P < 0.01), the excretion rates of sodium, potassium and chloride did not change, but the urinary sodium:potassium ratio decreased (P < 0.05). There was a decrease in lung liquid flow (P < 0.05) following losartan. 4. It is concluded that the fetal renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is important in the maintenance of fetal arterial pressure, the regulation of fetal renal blood flow and is essential in the maintenance of fetal glomerular function. Further, these actions of AngII are mediated via functional AT1 receptors. These effects of losartan on the fetal cardiovascular system, renal blood flow and function are similar to those observed following captopril administration. Thus, the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition in the foetus are due to the blockade of the fetal RAS and are independent of any direct effects on bradykinin or prostaglandin levels. 相似文献

1. Steroid-treated monocyte supernatants cause a dramatic increase in the speed of locomotion of human neutrophils and a significant decrease in their adhesion to protein-coated glass. In contrast, control monocyte supernatants have a smaller effect on the speed of locomotion, but cause a large increase in their adhesiveness. 2. This supernatant activity was produced equally well in the presence or absence of serum after 24 h culture at 37 degrees C with 10(-6) M dexamethasone. 3. The effect of the steroid-treated monocyte supernatants on the speed of locomotion of human peripheral blood neutrophils was not altered by rabbit polyclonal antisera against lipocortins 1-6. 4. Rabbit anti-interleukin-8 antibody which blocked the effect of IL-8 on the speed of locomotion of neutrophils did not antagonize the locomotion stimulating action of steroid-treated monocyte supernatants. 5. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is essential for blood pressure control and water-electrolyte balance. Until the discovery of the renin receptor, renin was believed to be mainly a circulating enzyme with a unique function, the cleavage of angiotensinogen. We report a unique mutation in the renin receptor gene (ATP6AP2) present in patients with X-linked mental retardation and epilepsy (OMIM no. 300423), but absent in 1200 control X-chromosomes. A silent mutation (c.321C>T, p.D107D) residing in a putative exonic splicing enhancer site resulted in inefficient inclusion of exon 4 in 50% of renin receptor mRNA, as demonstrated by quantitative RT-PCR. Analysis of membrane associated-receptor molecular forms showed the presence of full-length and truncated proteins in the patient. Functional analysis demonstrated that the mutated receptor could bind renin and increase renin catalytic activity, similar to the wild-type receptor, but resulted in a modest and reproducible impairment of ERK1/2 activation. Thus, our findings confirm the importance of the RAS in cognitive processes and indicate a novel specific role for the renin receptor in cognitive functions and brain development. 相似文献

Blood transfusion alters the course and outcome of Plasmodium chabaudi AS infection in mice. 下载免费PDF全文
The importance of severe anemia in the mortality of susceptible A/J mice during blood-stage Plasmodium chabaudi AS infection was assessed. Blood transfusion during and 2 to 3 days after peak parasitemia rescued 90% of susceptible mice from severe anemia and death and allowed these mice to clear the infection and acquire immunity to reinfection. However, blood transfusion prolonged the patency of the infection for up to 5 days after peak parasitemia. Blood transfusions in resistant C57BL/6 mice produced an identical effect, that is, prolongation of the patency of parasitemia. In addition, blood transfusion increased the numbers of gametocytes in both mouse strains. In both strains of mice, the rapid reduction in parasitemia, which occurs during crisis, was associated with the development of moderate levels of anemia. The possible mechanisms for the modulation of parasitemia by blood transfusion and the implications of the present observations for our understanding of the events which occur during crisis are discussed. It is proposed that parasitologic crisis is induced and/or maintained by physiological alterations associated with anemia. 相似文献

The National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) recommends, as a quality control for the disk diffusion susceptibility test, the use of three strains from the American Type Culture Collection: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. This study assesses the capacity of these strains to detect errors in the overall method. ATCC strains were tested by comparing testing by the standard NCCLS-recommended procedure (ST) with testing under the following conditions: incubation at 25 degrees C, Mueller-Hinton agar depths of 2 mm (AD2) and 8 mm (AD8), agar pHs of 6.5 and 8, inocula with McFarland standards of 0.25 (0.25M) and 4.0 McFarland (4.0M), direct inoculation without preincubation of inoculum (DI), and a 2-h delay between inoculation and disk application (2HR). The frequency of zone measurements outside the NCCLS-recommended control zone limits were as follows: ST, 0%; AD2, 18%; AD8, 9.6%; pH 6.5, 7.9%; pH 8, 5.3%; 0.25M, 3.5%; 4.0M, 24%; DI, 3.4%; 2HR, 1.8%; 25 degrees C (only E. coli and P. aeruginosa were evaluable), 28%. These results suggest that the quality control strains are only partially effective in detecting single extreme laboratory errors and that careful laboratory supervision is necessary even in the setting of properly monitored quality control strains. 相似文献
