Although there is a recent increase in the use of the isolated pancreatic islets of the rat in the transplantation and functional studies, there has been no detailed quantitative assessment on the size and cellular constituents of islets after the isolation procedure. The present work was undertaken to study the size classes of the isolated islets and the morphometry of their cellular populations. Islets of the rat pancreas were isolated by using the intraductal collagenase digestion technique, the most commonly used procedure for the isolation of pancreatic islets. Different endocrine cells of the isolated islets were stained by immunoperoxidase staining techniques. The distribution of the cellular constituents of the isolated islets was similar to that of the intact islets of the normal pancreas; A, D, and PP cells were peripherally arranged around the centrally located B cells. However, morphometric quantitative study showed that the percent volume and percent number of A, D, and PP cells of the isolated islets were lower than those of the corresponding intact ones. Further, the mean true diameter of the isolated islets was lower than that of the intact ones. These data indicate loss of islet cells during the process of isolation. Most of the lost cells were from the periphery of islets. This may provide an explanation for the incomplete metabolic control and recurrence of hyperglycemia encountered after isolated islet transplantation in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It seems that further refinements of the isolation techniques are necessary to obtain islet tissue with total cellular integrity, before a complete success in transplantation could be achieved. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Aggressive fibromatosis is proliferation of well‐differentiated fibroblasts. Submandibular region is rare location for fibromatosis. We report a case of a rapidly growing mass in submandibular region of 5‐year‐old girl, excised surgically and ascertained to be aggressive fibromatosis on histological examination. Recovery was uneventful, and she was disease‐free in 6‐month follow‐up.  相似文献

We report a case of a 71-year-old man with a long coronary artery disease history and two sets of coronary artery bypass grafts. He developed large aortocoronary saphenous vein graft aneurysms in the two grafts from the first set of aortocoronary saphenous venous 20 years later. During the previous 3 years, the aneurysms grew in diameter from 22 to 50 mm. Because of severe renal insufficiency, and in order to avoid jeopardizing the late normal coronary artery bypass grafts by further thoracic surgery, we excluded successfully these altered grafts percutaneously by using 13 coils during the same procedure.  相似文献

In this study, a high-density ZrN/ZrSi2 composite reinforced with ZrO2 as an inert phase was synthesized under vacuum starting with a Zr-Si4N3-ZrO2 blend using combustion-synthesis methodology accompanied by compaction. The effects of ZrO2 additions (10–30 wt%) and compression loads (117–327 MPa) on the microstructure, porosity and hardness of the samples were studied. The process was monitored using XRD, SEM, EDS, porosity, density and hardness measurements. Thermodynamic calculations of the effect of ZrO2 addition on the combustion reaction were performed including the calculation of the adiabatic temperatures and the estimation of the fractions of the liquid phase. The addition of up to 20 wt% ZrO2 improved the hardness and reduced the porosity of the samples. Using 20 wt% ZrO2, the sample porosity was reduced to 1.66 vol%, and the sample hardness was improved to 1165 ± 40.5 HV at 234 MPa.  相似文献

IntroductionTooth segmentation on cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging is a labor-intensive task considering the limited contrast resolution and potential disturbance by various artifacts. Fully automated tooth segmentation cannot be achieved by merely relying on CBCT intensity variations. This study aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tool for automated tooth segmentation on CBCT imaging.MethodsA total of 433 Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine images of single- and double-rooted teeth randomly selected from 314 anonymized CBCT scans were imported and manually segmented. An AI-driven tooth segmentation algorithm based on a feature pyramid network was developed to automatically detect and segment teeth, replacing manual user contour placement. The AI-driven tool was evaluated based on volume comparison, intersection over union, the Dice score coefficient, morphologic surface deviation, and total segmentation time.ResultsOverall, AI-driven and clinical reference segmentations resulted in very similar segmentation volumes. The mean intersection over union for full-tooth segmentation was 0.87 (±0.03) and 0.88 (±0.03) for semiautomated (SA) (clinical reference) versus fully automated AI-driven (F-AI) and refined AI-driven (R-AI) tooth segmentation, respectively. R-AI and F-AI segmentation showed an average median surface deviation from SA segmentation of 9.96 μm (±59.33 μm) and 7.85 μm (±69.55 μm), respectively. SA segmentations of single- and double-rooted teeth had a mean total time of 6.6 minutes (±76.15 seconds), F-AI segmentation of 0.5 minutes (±8.64 seconds, 12 times faster), and R-AI segmentation of 1.2 minutes (±33.02 seconds, 6 times faster).ConclusionsThis study showed a unique fast and accurate approach for AI-driven automated tooth segmentation on CBCT imaging. These results may open doors for AI-driven applications in surgical and treatment planning in oral health care.  相似文献

International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2012; 22: 280–285 Background. Based on measurements on dental casts, smaller permanent teeth in children with cleft palate have previously been reported in the literature; however, the early maturation of teeth and the size of the follicles and crowns have not been investigated. Hypothesis. The maturation of the mandibular permanent first molar (M1inf) is delayed, and the mesiodistal diameters of the follicle and crown of M1inf, respectively, are reduced in children with isolated cleft palate (ICP). Design. Retrospective, longitudinal. Cephalometric X‐rays were available for 2 and 22 months old children with clefts (64 children with ICP, and a control group of 38 children with unilateral incomplete cleft lip). The width of the follicle and the crown of M1inf, and the maturation of M1inf were assessed. Intra‐observer error was acceptable. Results. M1inf maturation was delayed in children with ICP at both 2 and 22 months of age. The mesiodistal diameter of the crown of M1inf in the ICP group was reduced. Thus, the two hypotheses could not be refuted. Conclusions. Children with ICP showed smaller dimensions of the M1inf, and in addition, the maturation of M1inf was delayed.  相似文献
