Essentialism and the cultural psychology of gender in extreme son preference communities in India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using a cultural ecological framework, the authors examined key psychological antecedents of a pressing public health problem in Tamilnadu, India: the persistence of extreme forms of female neglect including female infanticide and feticide. Community-based respondents (N = 798) were recruited from Tamilnadu, a south Indian state, from villages with highly male biased sex ratios. Study 1 examined beliefs about behavioral gender transgressions in the villages that are identified as having extremely male-biased sex ratios. Study 2 examined the same participants several weeks later, investigating beliefs about biological gender essentialism and attitudes toward violence. Although behavioral and biological aspects of gender were essentialized differently, a regression analysis controlling for SES and marital status found that the more men essentialized female identity, the more they endorsed violence against women and the less anxiety they felt. The authors conclude by discussing the cultural psychological implications of this asymmetry in the essentialist beliefs about gender. 相似文献

Porcine buccal mucosa has been used as an in vitro model to assess the potential of delivering a molecule via the transbuccal route. However, permeation studies across porcine buccal mucosa show high variability due to various experimental and biological factors. The variability associated with the use of different mucosal regions, tissue storage conditions and tissue processing methods on drug permeation was investigated in this study. The permeability of model diffusants was significantly higher in the region behind the lip when compared to the cheek region because the latter has a thicker epithelium. Porcine buccal mucosa retained its integrity in Kreb's bicarbonate ringer solution at 4°C for 24 h while many other storage conditions resulted in loss of epithelial integrity. Separation of the epithelium from underlying connective tissue either surgically or by heat treatment resulted in an epithelial thickness of approximately 150 µm. Separation of epithelium from the underlying connective tissue by heat treatment did not adversely affect its permeability and integrity characteristics. Oncolytic virotherapy with reovirus has demonstrated anti-cancer activity and minimal toxicity in clinical trials, but the mechanisms underlying these effects have not been fully elucidated. Reolysin, a proprietary formulation of reovirus for cancer therapy, stimulated selective viral replication and apoptosis in multiple myeloma (MM) cells. Reolysin-mediated apoptosis was associated with an induction of endoplasmic reticular (ER) stress-related gene expression, swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum, increases in intracellular calcium levels and a strong induction of the Bcl-2 homology 3 (BH3)-only pro-apoptotic protein NOXA. Knockdown of NOXA expression by short hairpin RNA significantly reduced the pro-apoptotic effects of Reolysin. We next showed that co-administration of Reolysin and bortezomib resulted in the dual accumulation of viral and ubiquitinated proteins, which led to enhanced ER stress, NOXA induction and apoptosis. Importantly, the combination of reovirus infection and proteasomal inhibition significantly decreased tumor burden in a xenograft and syngeneic bone disease model of MM without exhibiting adverse side effects. Our study establishes ER stress stimulation and NOXA induction as novel mediators of reovirus-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, reovirus infection can be used as a promising approach to augment the anti-myeloma activity of bortezomib by promoting additional stress to the endoplasmic reticulum of MM cells. 相似文献

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is typically offered to patients with primary cutaneous melanomas (PCMs) of ≥ 1 mm depth, but not all SLNs are positive using this cutoff. To ascertain whether positivity is genetically regulated, genetic analysis was performed using an augmented enrichment-based next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing assay in SLN-negative (Group 1, n = 8, mean depth 1.3 mm) and SLN-positive PCMs (controls, Group 2, n = 4, mean depth 1.4 mm). In Group 1, the mean number of mutations was 21 (range 3–48) with the most frequent mutations occurring in NF1 (75%) followed by TP53 (63%), CDKN2A and BRAF (38%), and NRAS (25%), while in Group 2, the ean number of mutations was 9.5 (range 5–18) with mutations in NRAS and BRAF being the most frequent (50%) followed by those in ATM, CDKN2A, CDKN2B, and NOTCH1 (25%). Increased frequency of NF1-inactivating mutations in Group 1 provides provocative early data that the presence of NF1 mutations might confer a less aggressive phenotype. 相似文献

The structurally related, low‐molecular weight S100 proteins constitute a family of proteins that possess a common basic structure allowing them to carry out a range of intracellular and extracellular functions. Unifying intracellular functions relate to regulation of proliferation, energy metabolism, calcium homeostasis, enzyme activities, cell growth and differentiation. Extracellular tasks, however, appear somewhat specific to select S100 members and include participation in innate and adaptive immune responses, tissue development and repair, and/or cell migration and chemotaxis. We use a braided polyester suture in place of cerclage wire in tension band fixations. The objective of this study was to test the biomechanical properties of this technique. Sixteen cadaveric patellae were fractured and repaired by modified tension band fixation. Eight were fixed using eighteen gauge stainless steel wire as a tension band and eight using braided polyester. All specimens were subjected to tensile testing. Polyester was 75.0% as strong as wire. For dynamic testing, the patellae of seven cadaveric knees were fractured and then fixed with polyester tension bands. These were mounted in a device capable of extending the knees from 90 degrees to neutral against an applied force. None of the fixations failed. Three of the specimens fixed using 18 gauge stainless steel wire were compared with three fixed using polyester over 2000 cycles of knee flexion and extension. Polyester performed as well as wire. We conclude that polyester is an acceptable alternative to wire in tension band fixation. 相似文献
