The most important prognostic factors for cervical cancer are tumor extent, tumor morphology, and lymph node involvement. Biomarkers may additionally provide an understanding of the individual tumor biology thereby allowing improved patient counseling. Owing to controversial results in various studies, however, most biomarkers failed to be validated and thus to reach the clinic. Reasons include the lack of standardized methods and retrospective analyses of heterogeneous groups. Some of the most promising candidates include the identification of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), and the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosomes 6p21.2 and 18q21.2. Moreover, lymphovascular invasion is a prognostic factor in early stages, indicating unfavorable outcome. In the future, gene expression profiling may provide a more detailed and thus predictive picture of personal cancer biology. 相似文献
The permanent ice cover of Lake Vida (Antarctica) encapsulates an extreme cryogenic brine ecosystem (−13 °C; salinity, 200). This aphotic ecosystem is anoxic and consists of a slightly acidic (pH 6.2) sodium chloride-dominated brine. Expeditions in 2005 and 2010 were conducted to investigate the biogeochemistry of Lake Vida’s brine system. A phylogenetically diverse and metabolically active Bacteria dominated microbial assemblage was observed in the brine. These bacteria live under very high levels of reduced metals, ammonia, molecular hydrogen (H2), and dissolved organic carbon, as well as high concentrations of oxidized species of nitrogen (i.e., supersaturated nitrous oxide and ∼1 mmol⋅L−1 nitrate) and sulfur (as sulfate). The existence of this system, with active biota, and a suite of reduced as well as oxidized compounds, is unusual given the millennial scale of its isolation from external sources of energy. The geochemistry of the brine suggests that abiotic brine-rock reactions may occur in this system and that the rich sources of dissolved electron acceptors prevent sulfate reduction and methanogenesis from being energetically favorable. The discovery of this ecosystem and the in situ biotic and abiotic processes occurring at low temperature provides a tractable system to study habitability of isolated terrestrial cryoenvironments (e.g., permafrost cryopegs and subglacial ecosystems), and is a potential analog for habitats on other icy worlds where water-rock reactions may cooccur with saline deposits and subsurface oceans. 相似文献
Testicular schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni is very rare and more so when associated with primary infertility. A 40 years old man from the Jos Plateau, North Central Nigeria presented with primary infertility after ten years of marriage. Sperm count revealed oligospermia and he also complained of inability to sustain erection. Testicular biopsy revealed several ova of Schistosoma mansoni in the connective tissue of the testes. Cases of infertility in endemic areas especially when there is no supply of potable water should raise suspicion of schistosomiasis among other pathologies and possible hormonal disturbances when the testes are involved. 相似文献
An anonymous online survey was conducted between February 2014 and October 2015 to describe parental perceptions concerning their participation in the care of their neonates hospitalized since birth in a neonatal unit in France. More than 3,300 parents completed the questionnaire. Parents felt very stressed the first time they took part in the caring of their neonates. Most parents reported they felt supported by the caregivers but not enough encouraged by them to do simple caregiving activities for which they felt capable.
