Where lies the boundary between common sensation and taste perception in electrogustometry (author's transl)]

The shift of the electrogustatory threshold following section of the corda tympani has been investigated in 14 patients. Postoperatively the anterior half of the tongue showed complete ageusia. Two thirds of the patients were able to recognize stimulations of 50-127 muA as a burning, and not a sour metallic, sensation for at least 1-2 weeks. Probably the trigeminal nerve endings perceive this burning sensation during the period of taste bud degeneration. A similar situation exists in cases where the gustatory fibres are interrupted proximal to the gustatory ganglion, because the tasts buds do not degenerate. It is therefore important to ask the patient to describe the sensation experienced. Only a sour metallic taste during electrogustometry should be regarded as a true gustatory sensation.     

NATRIURETIC EFFECT OF CHRONICALLY ADMINISTERED α-HUMAN ATRIAL NATRIURETIC POLYPEPTIDE IN SODIUM DEPLETED OR REPLETED CONSCIOUS SPONTANEOUSLY HYPERTENSIVE RATS

Hypotensive and natriuretic effects of chronically administered alpha-human atrial natriuretic polypeptide (alpha-hANP) were investigated in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) in both sodium depletion and repletion. Systolic blood pressure was significantly reduced in SHR and WKY in both sodium deplete and replete states. Urinary sodium excretion was significantly increased in SHR and tended to be increased in WKY on sodium repletion, but remained unchanged on sodium depletion. It is suggested that extracellular fluid volume may be an important determinant factor of the natriuretic action of ANP but may not affect the hypotensive effect.     

Peritumoral oedema and lipid content

Summary The authors analyzed the water and lipid contents of oedematous tissues of white matter obtained during the operation, comparing with the absorption value in the CT scan. As the absorption value lowered its level, the water content increased, while the lipid decreased. However, after subtracting these two components, the content of protein also showed a significant decrement parallel to the absorption value despite the existence of extravasated protein. The decrement of lipid content was considered to be due to a dilution effect by an expanded volume of extravasated oedema fluid, as well as the decrease in protein, rather than the actual loss of tissue component; that is demyelination. It is the relative decrease in protein content which contributes to the low absorption value of oedematous tissue.     

Growth of avian and human influenza viruses in organ cultures of duck and chicken colons

Summary Colons from ducks and chicken 1, 7, 14 and 28 days old maintained near-normal morphology up to 48 and 96 hours respectively in a system using NCTC 135 medium (1 part)+Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (9 parts), at 37° C and 95 per cent 0₂/5 per cent CO₂. In the colon of 1 and 28 day-old ducks, duck influenza virus (Hav7N2) and budgerigar influenza virus (Hav4Nav1) grew to peak titer by hour 72, whereas human influenza virus (H3N2) did not grow. In the colon of 1 day-old chicken, the three viruses grew in the order of first duck virus, then budgerigar virus and then human virus, but in the colon of 28 day-old chicken, the growth of human virus was much less. Specific fluorescence was demonstrated in the mucosal epithelium of the colon of ducks and chicken, and intensity of fluorescence correlated with virus yield. The fact that the avian and not the human influenza viruses showed good growth in the duck clons coincided with the fact that influenza viruses possessing avian hemagglutinin subtypes have frequently been isolated in nature from duck intestines.With 3 Figures     

Accumulation of Technetium-99m MDP in pseudomyxoma peritonei

An ovarian mucinous cystadenocarcinoma which moderately accumulated Tc-99m MDP was imaged during a whole body bone scan. The primary tumor and its implants in the peritoneal cavity were both visualized and correlated with US and TCT scan findings. As a result, the radiopharmaceutical distribution accurately delineated the primary tumor and the region of tumor involvement within the peritoneal cavity. Therefore, a whole body bone scan offers a potential method for assessing neoplastic size and spread.     

The effect of furosemide on glucose oxidation of the cochlea and other tissues

We tested the hypothesis that furosemide interferes with energy generation in the cochlea, and determined its effect on CO2 formation from glucose and glyceroaldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) activity by examining biochemical and histochemical changes in the cochlea, the kidney, and the liver. We found that furosemide suppressed CO2 formation in vitro at relatively low concentrations in all tissues examined. GAPDH was inhibited as soon as 2 min after its administration (80 mg/kg, i.v.). Recovery of this enzyme activity was most rapid in the liver. We concluded that furosemide does interfere with energy generation in the cochlea, kidney, and liver as a result of its inhibition of GAPDH.
