Between June 1981 and June 1983 the delayed hypersensitivity response (DHR) was studied in 401 patients considered for major surgical procedure: 320 of these patients underwent surgery. The incidence of sepsis and postoperative mortality was higher in anergic and relative anergic patients than in normal responders (p<0.001). To evaluate whether DHR depression in cancer patients was due to the direct effect of cancer or to tumour-linked malnutrition, the 401 patients were divided into 4 groups: 1) 140 malnourished cancer patients, 2) 51 malnourished non-cancer patients, 3) 120 well-nourished cancer patients and 4) 90 well-nourished non-cancer patients. The mean age was not significantly different for the 4 groups. The results showed a relationship between DHR and nutritional status (p<0.001). The tumour-related DHR impairment disappeared when the cancer and non-cancer patient groups were homogeneous with regard to their nutritional status. Therefore, the tumour was able to determine the DHR depression because of the cancer-linked malnutrition. We did not observe any relationship between local extension of the tumour and lymph node involvement and DHR depression. In 90 well-nourished non-cancer patients the relation between DHR and age was investigated. The incidence of anergy and relative anergy was higher in patients over 59 years than in patients under 60 years (p<0.001).  相似文献

This study aimed to determine whether pupils who have breakfast just before a cognitive demand, do not regularly skip breakfast, and consume a high-quality breakfast present higher cognitive performance than those who do not; furthermore, to establish differences according to their nutritional status. In this study, 1181 Chilean adolescents aged 10–14 years participated. A global cognitive score was computed through eight tasks, and the body mass index z-score (BMIz) was calculated using a growth reference for school-aged adolescents. The characteristics of breakfast were self-reported. Analyses of covariance were performed to determine differences in cognitive performance according to BMIz groups adjusted to sex, peak height velocity, physical fitness global score, and their schools. A positive association was found in adolescents’ cognitive performance when they had breakfast just before cognitive tasks, did not regularly skip breakfast, presented at least two breakfast quality components, and included dairy products. No significant differences were found between breakfast components, including cereal/bread and fruits/fruit juice. Finally, pupils who were overweight/obese who declared that they skipped breakfast regularly presented a lower cognitive performance than their normal-BMIz peers. These findings suggest that adolescents who have breakfast just prior to a cognitive demand and regularly have a high quality breakfast have better cognitive performance than those who do not. Educative nutritional strategies should be prioritized, especially in “breakfast skippers” adolescents living with overweight/obesity.  相似文献

During aging, changes in endosteal and periosteal boundaries of cortical bone occur that differ between men and women. We here develop a new procedure that uses high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT) imaging and 3D registration to identify such changes within the timescale of longitudinal studies. A first goal was to test the sensitivity of the approach. A second goal was to assess differences in periosteal/endosteal expansion over time between men and women. Rigid 3D registration was used to transform baseline and all follow-up (FU) images to a common reference configuration for which the region consisting of complete slices (largest common height) was determined. Periosteal and endosteal contours were transformed to the reference position to determine the net periosteal and endosteal expansion distances. To test the sensitivity, images from a short-term reproducibility study were used (15 female, aged 21 to 47 years, scanned three times). To test differences between men and women, images from a subset of the Geneva Retirees Cohort were used (248 female, 61 male, average age 65 years, 3.5 and 7 years FU). The sensitivity study indicated a least significant change for detecting periosteal/endosteal expansion of 41/31 microns for the radius and 17/26 microns for the tibia. Results of the cohort study showed significant net endosteal retraction only in females at the radius and tibia after 3.5 years (38.0 and 38.4 microns, respectively) that further increased at 7 years FU (70.4 and 70.8 microns, respectively). No significant net periosteal changes were found for males or females at 7 years. The results demonstrate that it is possible to measure changes in endosteal contours in longitudinal studies within several years. For the investigated cohort, significant endosteal retraction was found in females but not in males. Whether these changes in cortical geometry are related to fracture risk remains to be investigated in larger cohorts © 2021 The Authors. Two pig cell lines derived from kidney and trachea tissues and referred to as newborn swine kidney (NSK) and newborn pig trachea (NPTr) were established following serial culture of primary cells. They were characterized by an epithelial-like morphology, high capacity to replicate and stability of the cell monolayer for several days after seeding. Their modal chromosome number was modified in comparison to that of primary swine cells and they both displayed a transforming potential in vitro and displayed oncogenicity in nude mice. Infection with pig endogenous retroviruses was detected. Almost all the swine viruses tested, i.e., pseudorabies virus, pig parvovirus, hog cholera virus, transmissible gastroenteritis virus of swine, encephalomyocarditis virus, swine vesicular disease virus and the enteroviruses, except pig reproductive respiratory syndrome virus, were capable of replicating in the new cell lines with titres similar to the ones detected in the reference culture systems. Furthermore, all the selected influenza virus sub-types isolated from human, swine and avian species replicated with cytopathic effect in NSK and NPTr cells, whereas, of all the equine influenza viruses tested only the Miami and Suffolk sub-types replicated.  相似文献

The margination of a particle circulating in the blood stream has been analyzed. The contribution of buoyancy, hemodynamic forces, van der Waals, electrostatic and steric interactions between the circulating particle and the endothelium lining the vasculature has been considered. For practical applications, the contribution of buoyancy, hemodynamic forces and van der Waals interactions should be only taken into account, whilst the effect of electrostatic and steric repulsion becomes important only at very short distances from the endothelium (1–10 nm). The margination speed and the time for margination ts have been estimated as a function of the density of the particle relative to blood , the Hamaker constant A and radius R of the particle. A critical radius Rc exists for which the margination time ts has a maximum, which is influenced by both and A: the critical radius decreases as the relative density increases and the Hamaker constant decreases. Therefore, particles used for drug delivery should have a radius smaller than the critical value (in the range of 100 nm) to facilitate margination and interaction with the endothelium. While particles used as nanoharvesting agents in proteomics or genomics analysis should have a radius close to the critical value to minimize margination and increase their circulation time.  相似文献

Disorders of lipid metabolism during chronic renal failure (CRF) play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of early cardiovascular complication of this syndrome. In addition, some experimental evidence suggests that hyperlipidemia may accelerate progression of renal disease. We have studied 65 patients with CRF (S-creatinine 1.5-9.0 mg/dl), 52.3% of whom were hypertensive. Patients were divided in 2 groups matched for age, sex and degree of renal failure: group 1 was kept for 36 +/- 8 months on a free diet; group 2 was kept for 39 +/- 6 months on a low-protein diet with an elevated polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid (PUFA/SFA) ratio. We found significantly higher levels of triglycerides (TG) and lower levels of esterified cholesterol in high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) in group 1 than in group 2. Patients on the diet had a lower percentage of membrane SFA and a higher percentage of PUFA than patients on free diet. Only in group 1 a direct correlation between cholesterol/phospholipid (Chol/P) ratio and age was observed; in group 2, a negative correlation between levels of PUFA and TG and between linoleic/oleic (Lin/Ol) ratio and serum Chol was shown. S-creatinine levels were directly correlated with Chol/P ratio in group 1 and indirectly with Lin/Ol ratio and PUFA in group 2. These data show that a low-protein diet, containing an elevated PUFA/SFA ratio, is able to counteract lipid abnormalities in patients with CRF and the normalization of this pattern is associated with significant improvement of membrane lipid composition and, presumably, of "functional" activity of cell membranes with a better control of supposed "renal lipoprotein toxicity".  相似文献

Summary To delineate a possible interaction of atrial natriuretic peptide ANF-(99–126) with autonomic nervous system function in humans, a spectrum of indices were assessed in 10 healthy young men during a 90 min iv administration of a) synthetic ANF-(99–126) 50 g bolus followed by 0.025 g·kg–1·min–1, b) the potent vasodilator sodium nitroprusside (SNP) 0.35 g·kg–1·min–1, or c) vehicle 0.9% NaCl 40 ml and 20% albumin 5 ml, in random sequence.Plasma immunoreactive ANF (irANF) rose from 32 to 1700 pg·ml–1 during the ANF-(99–126) infusion and was stable during SNP or vehicle. Infusion of ANF-(99–126) and SNP, but not vehicle, decreased diastolic blood pressure (BP) on average by –9 and –7.5%, respectively; systolic BP was largely unchanged. Heart rate (HR, +15 and 12%) or plasma norepinephrine (NE) rose similarly during ANF-(99–126) and SNP infusions, and the systolic BP response to orthostasis was similar (–18 mm Hg). The following autonomic indices did not differ significantly after the 3 infusions: responses of HR and NE to orthrostasis; reflex bradycardic response to phenylephrine (PE)-induced rise in systolic BP (+20 mm Hg); responses of BP to hyperventilation, PE, or 3 min of sustained handgrip; and beat-to-beat variation (R-R interval) during deep breathing. The immediate orthostatic HR response (30/15 R-R interval ratio) fell similarly during infusion of ANF-(99–126) or nitroprusside.The findings indicate that in healthy men the function of the autonomic nervous system is not notably impaired by high circulating ANF levels. ANF-(99–126) infused in moderate dosage seems to lower BP largely by non-autonomic mechanisms.The study was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation  相似文献
