The stem cells involved in renewal of the corneal epithelium are located in the basal region of the limbus, a narrow transition
zone surrounding the cornea. In many ocular surface disorders loss of these stem cells results in partial or complete vision
loss. Conventional corneal transplant in these patients is associated with dismal results. Stem cell transplantation offers
new hope to such patients. The umbilical cord is emerging as an important source of stem cells that may have potential clinical
applications. There are advantages to the use of umbilical cord stem cells as these cells are less immunogenic, non-tumorigenic,
highly proliferative and ethically acceptable. In this study, we have confirmed the expression of several putative limbal
stem cell markers such as HES1, ABCG2, BMI1, CK15 as well as cell adhesion-associated molecules INTEGRIN-α6, -α9, -β1, COLLAGEN-IV
and LAMININ in our recently characterized CLEC-muc population derived from human umbilical cord. Ex vivo expansion of these
cells on a human amniotic membrane substrate formed a stratified cell sheet that similarly expresses some of these molecules
as well as cornea-specific cytokeratins, CK3 and CK12. Transplantation of a bioengineered CLEC-muc sheet in limbal stem cell-deficient
rabbit eyes resulted in regeneration of a smooth, clear corneal surface with phenotypic expression of the normal corneal-specific
epithelial markers CK3, CK12 but not CK4 or CK1/10. Our results suggest that CLEC-muc is a novel stem cell that can be ex

Objective: to assess the outcomes and competencies of medical undergraduates regarding their learning abilities after introducing Clinical Presentation Curriculum (CPC) instead of Traditional Curriculum in Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, Bahawalpur. Design: a cross-sectional comparative study. Place and Duration of Study: 3rd and 4th year MBBS class during session 2004-2005 at Quaid-i-Azam Medical College (QMC), Bahawalpur. Subjects and Methods: Five hundred students of 3rd year and 4th year MBBS who were taught for 176 and 172 hours respectively, appeared in 20 tests during session 2004-2005, were included in the study. Students were taught pathology according to Traditional Curricular model for 88 and 86 hours, respectively during college hours. Ten class tests each of 3rd and 4th year MBBS were taken and scores recorded. In the next step, the same group of students were taught in accordance with CPC model for 88 and 86 hours respectively in college hours. Ten class tests each were taken and scores recorded. A standardized questionnaire was given to all 500 students after finishing with each curricular model and then the results were compared on SPSS 8.0 regarding their study trends, thinking abilities, intellectual skills and liking of CPC. Chi-square test was used to get significance values and percentages were used for the evaluation of differences. Results: This study detected the positive effects of CPC model not only on study trends and thought process but also had the beneficial effects on learning potential of students in QMC where traditional curriculum was being followed for teaching students. When compared with traditional curricula, CPC model significantly ( p =< 0.01) improved the learning methods to improve knowledge and intellectual skills e.g; group discussions, internet use, reading latest and relevant journals and visits to wards and concerned teachers. Academic performances of these students significantly (p =< 0.01) improved regarding their class test attendance, class room attendance and marks obtained in tests when compared with traditional curricula. Similarly, there was significant (p =< 0.01) increase in divergent thinkers. Conclusion: CPC, introduced in 3rd and 4th year MBBS of QMC, Bahawalpur, with traditional curriculum, significantly improved the academic performance, learning behaviour and intellectual skills of students. 相似文献

Oxidative stress is one of the key factors in the pathophysiology of liver disease. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential impact of two antioxidants, namely coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and silymarin, on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced oxidative stress and hepatic damage in ovariectomized rats. Female Long Evans rats were divided into six groups (n = 6): control, CCl4, CCl4 + CoQ10 (200 mg/kg), CCl4 + silymarin (140 mg/kg), Control + CoQ10, and Control + silymarin. Plasma and tissues from liver and kidney were analyzed for oxidative stress parameters and antioxidant enzyme activities using biochemical assays. Infiltration of inflammatory cells and fibrosis were assessed by histological staining of tissue sections. Both CoQ10 and silymarin significantly lowered serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels that were detected to be higher in CCl4 rats compared to controls. Significant reduction in CCl4-induced elevated levels of oxidative stress markers malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and advanced protein oxidation product (APOP) was observed with both antioxidants. However, in control rats, CoQ10 and silymarin did not produce a significant effect. Histological analysis revealed that CCl4 markedly increased the level of inflammatory cells infiltration and fibrosis in liver and kidney tissues, but this was significantly reduced in CCl4 + CoQ10 and CCl4 + silymarin groups. Taken together, our results suggest that CoQ10 and silymarin can protect the liver against oxidative damage through improved antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced lipid peroxidation. Thus, supplementation of the aforementioned antioxidants may be useful as a therapeutic intervention to protect liver health in chronic liver diseases. 相似文献
