The Covid-19 pandemic caused lockdown of economies, which in turn led to the worsening of the economic situation of many households. During the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic governments undertook various measures to support economies and societies, including jobs protection along with financial support provision to people who suffered financial loss during the economic crisis. We analyse the economic situation of older Europeans, depending on their socio-economic status as well as country of residence characteristics, including economic and labour market changes during the first phase of the pandemic, the strictness of government policies but also the country development level using the Human Development Index. We use the results of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), including the SHARE Corona Telephone Survey, which was conducted during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our results indicate that individual characteristics have a higher impact on individual economic stress, compared to country characteristics. However, country’s response to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, but also the overall level of development influences the economic situation and ability to cope with the economic risks people aged 50 and over face. People in more developed countries have smaller difficulties in making ends meet, while the economic crisis and more stringent policies reduce chances to receive financial support and increase economic risks. 相似文献

Lung cancer is one of the most common neoplasms globally, with about 2.2 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths annually. Although the most important factor in reducing lung cancer risk is lifestyle change, most patients favour the use of supplements, for example, rather than quitting smoking or following a healthy diet. To better understand the efficacy of such interventions, a systematic review was performed of data from randomized controlled trials concerning the influence of beta-carotene supplementation on lung cancer risk in subjects with no lung cancer before the intervention. The search corpus comprised a number of databases and eight studies involving 167,141 participants, published by November 2021. The findings indicate that beta-carotene supplementation was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (RR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.06–1.26). This effect was even more noticeable among smokers and asbestos workers (RR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.08–1.35) and non-medics (RR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.07–1.29). A meta-regression found no relationship between the beta-carotene supplementation dose and the size of the negative effect associated with lung cancer risk. Our findings indicate that beta-carotene supplementation has no effect on lung cancer risk. Moreover, when used as the primary chemoprevention, beta-carotene may, in fact, increase the risk of lung cancer. 相似文献

The development of new chemically resistant anodes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) is urgently required to avoid the costly deep hydrogen purification method. Ba0.95Ca0.05Ce0.9Y0.1O3−δ (5CBCY), which is more chemically resistant than BaCaCe0.9Y0.1O3−δ, was here tested as a component of a composite NiO–5CBCY anode material. A preparation slurry comprising 5CBCY, NiO, graphite, and an organic medium was tape cast, sintered and subjected to thermal treatment in 10 vol.% H2 in Ar at 700 °C. Differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, quadrupole mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, the AC four-probe method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used for the investigation. The electrical conductivity of the Ni–5CBCY in H2–Ar at 700 °C was 1.1 S/cm. In the same gas atmosphere but with an additional 5 vol.% CO2, it was slightly lower, at 0.8 S/cm. The Ni–5CBCY cermet exhibited repeatable electrical conductivity values during Ni-to-NiO oxidation cycles and NiO-to-Ni reduction in the 5CBCY matrix, making it sufficient for preliminary testing in PCFCs. 相似文献

Senescence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) contributes to aging as well as age-related diseases of the cardiovascular system. Senescent VSMCs have been shown to be present in atherosclerotic plaques. Both replicative (RS) and stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) accompany cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to establish the signature of RS and SIPS of VSMCs, induced by a common anticancer drug, doxorubicin, and to discover the so far undisclosed features of senescent cells that are potentially harmful to the organism. Most of the senescence hallmarks were common for both RS and SIPS; however, some differences were observed. 32 % of doxorubicin-treated cells were arrested in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, while 73 % of replicatively senescing cells were arrested in the G1 phase. Moreover, on the basis of alkaline phosphatase activity measurements, we show that a 7-day treatment with doxorubicin (dox), does not cause precocious cell calcification, which is a characteristic feature of RS. We did not observe calcification even though after 7 days of dox-treatment many other markers characteristic for senescent cells were present. It can suggest that dox-induced SIPS does not accelerate the mineralization of vessels. We consider that detailed characterization of the two types of cellular senescence can be useful in in vitro studies of potential anti-aging factors. 相似文献

Aim: To determine whether homocysteine concentrations in umbilical cord plasma of neonates born to mothers with pre-eclampsia are elevated compared to concentrations in neonates born to normotensive women.
Method: Maternal blood from eight women with pre-eclampsia and ten women without pre-eclampsia was collected on admission for labour. Cord blood was collected from these same pregnancies at delivery. Plasma was extracted and stored at −70°C. Samples were batch-analysed for homocysteine.
Result: Maternal plasma homocysteine levels were observed to be significantly higher in the pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia compared to the control pregnancies ( P = 0.043) with median levels of 5.4 µmol/L (interquartile range (IQR) 4.6–7.9; range 3.6–16.7) versus 4.1 µmol/L (IQR 3.4–5.1, range 3.1–6.7). Homocysteine concentrations in umbilical cord plasma in pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia were also significantly higher compared to those in normotensive pregnancies ( P = 0.016) with median concentration levels of 5.3 µmol/L (IQR 4.8–7.2, range 2.5–16.6) versus 3.8 µmol/L (IQR 2.8–4.4, range 0.8–1.6).

Clock drawing has recently been shown to lie useful in differentiating Alzieimer's disease patients from normal controls. Our procedure for clock drawing differed from other published reports in that a copy condition was employed and patients were asked to set clock hands to read "ten after eleven". We found both clock drawing procedures to be correlated with tests related to executive and visuospatial functioning. In both conditions, nondemented controls performed significantly better than demented patients. In the command condition there was no difference between Alzheimer patients and patients with cerebrovascular dementia. In the copy condition, patients with cerebrovascular dementia performed significantly worse than Alzheimer patients. The inclusion of a copy condition appears to greatly expand the utility of this test. Although our scoring system did not differentiate between various dementing disorders in the command condition, if clock drawing is used as a screening instrument, lack of improvement in the copy condition in comparison to the command condition may be a sign of a vascular involvement. 相似文献

Purpose
To compare overall survival and toxicities after yttrium-90 (90Y) radioembolization and chemoembolization with drug-eluting embolics (DEE) in patients with infiltrative hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Materials and Methods
Retrospective review of 50 patients with infiltrative HCC without main portal vein invasion who were treated with 90Y radioembolization (n = 26) or DEE chemoembolization (n = 24) between March 2007 and August 2012 was completed. Infiltrative tumors were defined by cross-sectional imaging as masses that lacked well-demarcated boundaries, and treatment allocations were made by a multidisciplinary tumor board. Median age was 63 years; median tumor diameter was 9.0 cm; and there were no significant differences between groups in performance status, severity of liver disease, or HCC stage. Toxicities were graded by Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v4.03. Overall survival from treatment was assessed by Kaplan-Meier analysis, with analysis of potential predictors of survival with log-rank test.Results
There was no difference in the average number of procedures performed in each treatment group (DEE, 1.5 ± 1.1; 90Y, 1.6 ± 0.5; P = .97), and technical success was achieved in all cases. Abdominal pain (73% vs 33%; P = .004) and fever (38% vs 8%; P = .01) were more frequent after DEE chemoembolization. There was no significant difference in median overall survival between treatment groups after treatment (DEE, 9.9 months; 90Y, 8.1 months; P = .11).Conclusions

Biological ice nucleators (IN) function as catalysts for freezing at relatively warm temperatures (warmer than −10 °C). We examined the concentration (per volume of liquid) and nature of IN in precipitation collected from Montana and Louisiana, the Alps and Pyrenees (France), Ross Island (Antarctica), and Yukon (Canada). The temperature of detectable ice-nucleating activity for more than half of the samples was ≥ −5 °C based on immersion freezing testing. Digestion of the samples with lysozyme (i.e., to hydrolyze bacterial cell walls) led to reductions in the frequency of freezing (0–100%); heat treatment greatly reduced (95% average) or completely eliminated ice nucleation at the measured conditions in every sample. These behaviors were consistent with the activity being bacterial and/or proteinaceous in origin. Statistical analysis revealed seasonal similarities between warm-temperature ice-nucleating activities in snow samples collected over 7 months in Montana. Multiple regression was used to construct models with biogeochemical data [major ions, total organic carbon (TOC), particle, and cell concentration] that were accurate in predicting the concentration of microbial cells and biological IN in precipitation based on the concentration of TOC, Ca2+, and NH4+, or TOC, cells, Ca2+, NH4+, K+, PO43−, SO42−, Cl−, and HCO3−. Our results indicate that biological IN are ubiquitous in precipitation and that for some geographic locations the activity and concentration of these particles is related to the season and precipitation chemistry. The advent of biological therapy has revolutionized inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care. Nonetheless, not all patients require biological therapy. Selection of patients depends on clinical characteristics, previous response to other medical therapy, and comorbid conditions. Availability, reimbursement guidelines, and patient preferences guide the choice of first-line biological therapy for luminal Crohn's disease (CD). Infliximab (IFX) has the most extensive clinical trial data, but other biological agents (adalimumab (ADA), certolizumab pegol (CZP), and natalizumab (NAT)) appear to have similar benefits in CD. Steroid-refractory, steroid-dependent, or complex fistulizing CD are indications for starting biological therapy, after surgical drainage of any sepsis. For fistulizing CD, the efficacy of IFX for inducing fistula closure is best documented. Unique risks of NAT account for its labeling as a second-line biological agent in some countries. Patients who respond to induction therapy benefit from systematic re-treatment. The combination of IFX with azathioprine is better than monotherapy for induction of remission and mucosal healing up to 1 year in patients who are na?ve to both agents. Whether this applies to other agents remains unknown. IFX is also effective for treatment-refractory, moderate, or severely active ulcerative colitis. Patients who have a diminished or loss of response to anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy may respond to dose adjustment of the same agent or switching to another agent. Careful consideration should be given to the reasons for loss of response. There are insufficient data to make recommendations on when to stop anti-TNF therapy. Preliminary evidence suggests that a substantial proportion of patients in clinical remission for >1 year, without signs of active inflammation can remain in remission after stopping treatment. 相似文献
