How long does 'memory consolidation' take? New compounds can improve retention performance, even if administered up to 24 hours after the learning experience

The 'nootropics' are a new class of psychoactive substances that improve learning and memory. Their almost exclusive effect on memory may indicate that they act on processes specifically involved in information storage. When administered after the learning trial, these substances improve subsequent retention performance in mice, even if an interval of 8 h has elapsed between learning and treatment. CGS 5649B, a highly active new substance, is effective even after an interval of 24 h. Although consonant with the 'consolidation' hypothesis, the results may challenge prevailing notions about the formation of memory traces.     

Late results of surgical treatment of renal clear-cell carcinoma

Late results of surgical treatment are reported in a group of 140 patients operated for clear-cell renal carcinoma in the years 1960–1974. The mean survival time was 5.61 years for males and 6.59 years for femals which is, respectively, 14.19 years and 15.39 years shorter than the mean life expectancy of their peers in the general population. The survival time of males depended in 15.7% on the age at the time of operation and in 68.7% on the tumour progression grade (T). The respective data of females were 13% and 17.6%. The 5-year survival rate was 40% and the 10-years survival rate was 28.6%.     

Synthesis of L-cysteine derivatives of immunotropic activity

The new immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory agents have been searched in a group of the synthetic L-cysteine and 3-acetyl-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid derivatives. Synthesis of 17 compounds is reported.

本文应用气相色谱技术直接测定三种生物膜(人红细胞膜,人血小板膜和鼠肝线粒体膜)多不饱和脂肪酸的含量变化,检测脂质过氧化程度。实验证实几种多羟酚类化合物(儿茶精,阿魏酸钠和没食子酸及其衍生物)不同程度地抑制(OH)诱导的脂质过氧化反应,并呈量效和构效关系。这类抗氧化剂对保护生物膜的结构与功能是有益的。
