ObjectiveAltered serum S100B protein levels have been shown in several psychiatric disorders. Our aim was to investigate whether plasma S100B is different in patients with panic disorder (PD) when compared with controls. Our second aim was to investigate whether treatment with SSRIs have an effect on S100B levels in patients with PD.MethodsThe sample included 32 patients diagnosed with PD (21 women, 11 men) per DSM-IV criteria and 21 healthy controls (11 women, 10 men). S100B levels were measured with BioVendor Human S100B ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit.Results14 patients were not on drug treatment (43.8%) while 18 patients were taking various SSRIs. Median S100B value was 151.7 pg/mL (minimum-maximum: 120.4-164.7 pg/mL) in the control group, 147.4 pg/mL (minimum-maximum: 138.8-154.1 pg/mL) in the drug free group and 153.0 pg/mL (minimum-maximum: 137.9-164.7 pg/mL) in the treatment group. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed a significant diffrerence among the three groups (z=9.9, df=2, p=0.007). Follow up Mann-Whitney-U tests indicated that while the control and the patients with treatment were not significantly different (z=-0.05, p=0.96), there were significant differences between the control group and untreated patients (z=-2.6, p=0.009) and treated and untreated patients (z=-3.0, p=0.003).ConclusionOur results suggested that, serum S100B protein level might be decreased in untreated PD patients and that patients who were treated with SSRIs had similar S100B level to healthy controls.  相似文献

[Purpose] Although oxidative stress is known to be present in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the effects of exercise on oxidative parameters are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of acute aerobic exercise on serum oxidant and antioxidant levels in patients with RA. [Subjects and Methods] Sixteen patients with RA and 10 age-matched healthy volunteers participated in this study. All participants wore polar telemeters and walked on a treadmill for 30 minutes at a speed eliciting 60–75% of maximal heart rates. Blood samples were obtained before, immediately and 24 hours after exercise and malondialdehyde (MDA) and total sulfhydrile group (RSH) levels were measured. [Results] Both groups had similar heart rates during the test but the treadmill speed of the RA patients was significantly lower than that of the healthy volunteers. Serum MDA levels were lower than in both groups immediately after exercise, with greater decrements in the RA patients than controls. MDA levels returned to baseline 24 hours after the exercise only in the controls; they remained low in the RA patients. There was a slight increase in serum RSH levels after exercise compared to baseline in both groups. [Conclusion] Moderate intensity treadmill exercise did not have any adverse effect on the oxidant-antioxidant balance. The results suggest that such an exercise may be safely added to the rehabilitation program of RA for additional antioxidant effects. Blood pressure was measured in 3317 men, aged 40-59, working in H. Cegielski Metal Works in Poznań. The average systolic pressure for the whole population was 130.9 mmHg (SE = 17.90). The average diastolic pressure was 83.7 mmHg (SE = 10.03). The systolic, diastolic and mixed systolic-diastolic hypertension was found in 539 men which makes 16.3% of the study group. The borderline systolic hypertension was found in 327 men i.e. 9.9%, borderline diastolic hypertension in 267 men i.e. 8.0%. Both systolic and diastolic borderline hypertension displayed 339 men i.e. 10.2% of the study group. So, borderline hypertension (systolic, diastolic and systolic-diastolic) was found in 933 men which makes 28.1% of the population under the study.  相似文献

A 19-y-old woman presented with Proteus vulgaris meningitis as a complication of chronic otitis media. Despite treatment with ceftazidime and amikacin no clinical improvement was observed. Cranial MRI revealed right-sided mastoiditis/otitis media and venous sinus thrombosis. After mastoidectomy, repeat cranial MRI demonstrated abscess formation in the venous sinuses. The abscess was drained. Clostridium spp. was isolated from the abscess culture.  相似文献

The major clinical features of myocardial noncompaction are heart failure, arrhythmias, and thromboembolic events. Prominent myocardial trabeculae and deep recesses characteristic of myocardial noncompaction can cause stagnant blood flow and the formation of left ventricular clots. We describe the case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of heart failure secondary to left ventricular noncompaction. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography revealed multiple left ventricular thrombi, which had formed despite the patient's long-term therapy with aspirin.Anticoagulative therapy should be considered for patients with myocardial noncompaction who also have risk factors for thromboembolism, such as atrial fibrillation, a history of systemic embolism, or severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction. However, chronic antiplatelet therapy may not sufficiently prevent clot formation in patients who have myocardial noncompaction and severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction.  相似文献

Introduction and Objective: The present study aims to quantitatively evaluate the right ventricle (RV) function by means of transthoracic echocardiography in normal children and childhood congenital heart disease patients with pulmonary hypertension. Patients and Methods: This study was conducted in a cohort including 40 healthy children and 30 pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension who were diagnosed under close surveillance at the study center between October 2009 and November 2010. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the patient and control groups for the right ventricle myocardial performance index (RVMPI), the left ventricle myocardial performance index (LVMPI), the tricuspid valve systolic flow velocity (Ts), the ratio of systolic pulmonary artery pressure to the right ventricle outflow tract systolic flow velocity time integral (sPAP/RVOT VTI), and the ratio of systolic pulmonary artery pressure to right ventricle outflow tract systolic flow velocity time integral × heart rate (sPAP/[RVOT VTI×HR]). When the children were divided into three groups based on their pulmonary vascular resistance significant differences emerged that predicted an increasing severity of RV dysfunction. Significant differences were also observed for the RVMPI, the LVMPI, and the Ts as well as for echocardiographic pulmonary flow (Qp) and systemic flow (Qs). Discussion: The present study demonstrates that echocardiographic parameters can be used for the quantitative detection of RV dysfunction in childhood congenital heart disease patients with high pulmonary artery pressure (systolic, diastolic, and mean) or pulmonary vascular resistance.  相似文献

Background

A prospective study was performed to evaluate the effect of inguinal hernia repairs on the genitofemoral nerve (GFN), and to compare postoperative electrophysiologic changes in the GFN of patients who had undergone either open or laparoscopic surgery.

Methods

Seventy patients with a mean age of 6.48 ± 3.49 were enrolled in the study. Either open or laparoscopic techniques were used to operate on the patients' inguinal hernias. In all cases, bilateral GFN motor responses were investigated electrophysiologically using surface electrodes on three occasions: preoperatively, in the first month, and third month postoperatively. t-Tests were used to compare changes in the GFN.

Results

Preoperative mean latency of the GFN in all groups was found to be significantly prolonged on the hernia side, compared with the non-hernia side (P = 0.01). Although no difference was observed in the latency levels of the GFN on the operated side at the preoperative and early postoperative stages, GFN latency levels decreased significantly in the late postoperative period in the laparoscopic group (P < 0.05). In the late postoperative period, amplitudes of GFN motor responses were significantly higher in the laparoscopic group than the open repair group (0.91 ± 0.11 mV and 0.57 ± 0.053 mV, respectively; P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Preoperative prolonged latency of GFN on the hernia side is likely to occur due to the pressure on the nerve caused by the hernia mass. By surgically removing the hernia mass, this buildup of pressure is prevented, decreasing the latency of the GFN. The significantly higher motor response amplitudes and decreased latency in the late postoperative stage for the laparoscopic group may be due to the fact that this technique is less invasive.  相似文献

The incidence of bronchiectasis has declined significantly in industrialized countries and its management has also changed because of the progress of antibiotic therapy. However, for some patients, medical treatment is not sufficient to control the disease and the quality of life is affected. Surgical treatment is then a very good alternative, when a gesture of complete resection of the affected areas is feasible in terms of lung function and it allows, with a low morbidity and mortality, for very satisfactory long-term results and slows down the progression of the disease. In cases of diffuse and inhomogeneous bronchiectasis, a gesture of incomplete resection of cystic, non-perfused and suppurative areas improves symptoms and reduces recurrent infections. When the bronchiectasis is diffuse, but homogeneous, associated with severe respiratory failure, lung transplantation should be considered. Therefore, surgery remains important in the management of bronchiectasis. Its indications and the lung resection gesture to achieve should be discussed based on the symptoms, imaging examinations and the lung function of the patient.  相似文献
