PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to determine the degree of expression of virulence factors such as adherence, cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) and production of proteinase by different morphological forms of Candida albicans causing oral candidiasis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. METHODS: C. albicans 3153A and two strains isolated from oral thrush in HIV infected individuals were induced to undergo phenotypic switching by exposure to UV light and the degree of expression of virulence factors by the different morphological forms was studied. RESULTS: Three different morphological forms of C. albicans were obtained namely, star (S), wrinkled (W) and ring (R) types from the original smooth (O) variety. It was found that proteinase production was greatest with the W type followed by the R type and O type. The S type produced the least proteinase. Expression of cell surface hydrophobicity and adherence was greatest in the O type followed by the R and then the W type and finally the S type. CONCLUSIONS: The differential expression of virulence factors occurs with different phenotypic forms of C. albicans and this may provide a particular morphological type with a distinct advantage over other types in causing candidiasis. 相似文献

The pleura responds to the presence of infecting organisms with a vigorous inflammatory response associated with an exudation of white blood cells and proteins. The development and outcome of pleural infections is a function of a balance between the virulence of the invading microorganism and the immune reaction involving professional immune cells as well as the pleural mesothelial cells. Most commonly, pleural infection occurs after invasion through the lung parenchyma and a breach in the viscera pleura resulting in the formation of a parapneumonic process. Upon infection, the microorganisms are recognized by the pleural mesothelial cell, which remains the first line of defence. Pleural responses to infection include those of innate immunity as well as adaptive or acquired immunity. Innate and acquired immune responses are closely linked. In this review, we discuss the different virulence factors that allow microorganisms to infect the pleura and the role of the pleural mesothelial cells in bridging the innate and acquired immune responses. 相似文献

We have used immunocytochemical techniques to investigate the distribution of serotonin-like immunoreactivity in the nematode Ascaris suum. Antisera raised against serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) labelled a pair of neurons in the pharynx of both sexes and five cells in the ventral cord of the male tail. The labelling was blocked by 5-HT or by 5-HT conjugated to BSA. The 5-HT-immunoreactive cells in the pharynx resemble neurosecretory cells and are probably homologous to the neurosecretory motor neurons (NSM) in Caenorhabditis elegans; the cells in the male tail appear to be motor neurons that are homologous to CP neurons in C. elegans. A wholemount immunocytochemical method was used for the localization of cholecystokinin (CCK8)-like and gastrin-like immunoreactivity in Ascaris. The patterns of specific neuronal staining given by two antisera and four monoclonal antibodies made against CCK8, and one antiserum made against gastrin were investigated. Preabsorption of these antibodies with CCK8 or gastrin 17 resulted in complete loss of immunoreactivity in almost all of the neurons (two antisera also contained nonspecific antibodies), suggesting that all of the antibodies recognize epitopes, in Ascaris neurons, that include some or all of the C-terminal five amino acids that are identical in CCK8 and gastrin 17. However, the seven different antibodies showed immunoreactivity in different subpopulations of neurons, implying that there are at least seven different species of CCK-like molecules in Ascaris. Fractionation of Ascaris peptide extracts by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), monitoring fractions with a CCK8 radioimmunoassay (RIA), also shows heterogeneity of molecules immunologically related to CCK8. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

During 2017–2019, a total of 88/753 (11.7%) of patients 5–90 years of age in hospitals in Saravan Province, Laos, were seropositive for hepatitis C virus antibodies. Viral RNA was found in 44 samples. Sequencing showed high diversity within genotype 6. We recommend exposure-risk investigations and targeted testing and treatment. 相似文献
