A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) can provide atomic-resolution images of solids covered with a variety of liquids, including cryogenic fluids, both polar and nonpolar solvents, conductive aqueous solutions, oils, and even greases. This short overview includes images of solids covered with liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, paraffin oil, silicone oil, microscope immersion oil, silicone vacuum grease, fluorocarbon grease, glycerol, and salt water. These images show atoms, charge-density waves, grains in an evaporated metal film, and even corrosion processes as they occur in real time. The future includes not only basic research in surface science but also applied research in lithography, lubrication, catalysis, corrosion, electrochemistry, and perhaps even biology. 相似文献

Synthesis and biological evaluation of technetium-99m MAG3 as a hippuran replacement 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new technetium-chelating agent based on a triamide monomercaptide tetradentate set of donor groups, mercaptoacetylglycylglycylglycine (MAG3), was synthesized and evaluated. Chelation with 99mTc resulted in a single radiochemical product as expected. Studies in mice of [99mTc]MAG3 indicated excretion rates faster than omicron-iodohippurate (OIH) both in normal and in probenecid treated animals. Specificity for renal excretion was essentially complete. Clearance studies in rats resulted in 2.84 ml/min/100 g for [99mTc]MAG3, 2.17 for OIH, and 1.29 for [125I]iothalamate. Extraction efficiencies were 85% for [99mTc]MAG3, 69% for OIH and 39% for [125I]iothalamate. Probenicid depressed the clearance both of [99mTc]MAG3 and OIH at 25 and 50 mg/kg/hr, but to a greater extent with [99mTc]MAG3. The greater effect is offset, however, by the larger fraction secreted by the renal tubular cells. The animal results suggest that [99mTc]MAG3 may be a useful alternative to [131I]OIH. 相似文献

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the effect of loss of breast cancer metastasis suppressor 1 (BRMS1) protein expression on disease-free survival in breast cancer patients stratified by estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), or HER2 status, and to determine whether loss of BRMS1 protein expression correlated with genomic copy number changes. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A tissue microarray immunohistochemical analysis was done on tumors of 238 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients who underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 1996, and a comparison was made with 5-year clinical follow-up data. Genomic copy number changes were determined by array-based comparative genomic hybridization in 47 breast cancer cases from this population and compared with BRMS1 staining. RESULTS: BRMS1 protein expression was lost in nearly 25% of cases. Patients with tumors that were PR negative (P=0.006) or HER2 positive (P=0.039) and <50 years old at diagnosis (P=0.02) were more likely to be BRMS1 negative. No overall correlation between BRMS1 staining and disease-free survival was observed. A significant correlation, however, was seen between loss of BRMS1 protein expression and reduced disease-free survival when stratified by either loss of ER (P=0.008) or PR (P=0.029) or HER2 overexpression (P=0.026). Overall, there was poor correlation between BRMS1 protein staining and copy number status. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest a mechanistic relationship between BRMS1 expression, hormone receptor status, and HER2 growth factor. BRMS1 staining could potentially be used in patient stratification in conjunction with other prognostic markers. BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of small defects of the alar groove can be a unique challenge owing to the importance of maintaining its concave structure. OBJECTIVE: To present a report of a patient with a small alar groove defect that was repaired using a combination of partial primary closure and second-intention healing. METHODS: A 73-year-old female was referred for the treatment of a basal cell carcinoma of the right nasal ala and underwent Mohs micrographic surgery with clearance of the lesion. The final defect, less than 1 cm, extended to the subcutaneous fat. Two absorbable subcutaneous sutures were placed in the defect, and the wound was then allowed to heal by second intention. RESULTS. This closure yielded a good cosmetic result, with preservation of the alar groove. CONCLUSION: A combination of primary closure and second-intention healing is a time-efficient, low-risk option for nonperforating, small alar groove defects. 相似文献

Arterial complications occurring in association with knee replacement surgery are rare, even though most patients having this operation are elderly and therefore more likely to have peripheral vascular disease. We report a patient who developed an arterial complication during the course of a knee replacement operation, as well as the results of a survey of Fellows of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. A previously reported paradigm in which rats run down a runway for food reward followed by morphine injection was analyzed to assess the utility of the paradigm in studies of opiate reinforcement. One experiment replicated the original report that post-trial morphine caused both an increase in runway speed and a decrease in food consumption (taste aversion) over successive trials, and showed in addition that the increase in runway speed did not occur as a result of food deprivation alone, but required the animals to have consumed food in the goal box. A second study using the quaternary opiate antagonist methyl naltrexone to block the peripheral effects of morphine suggested that the increase in runway speed has a peripheral locus while the taste aversion has a central one. A third experiment in which morphine was microinjected into either the lateral ventricle or the ventral tegmental area supported these observations, in that intracranial morphine failed to result in an increased runway speed, but did produce taste aversion after microinjection into either site. These findings also suggest that the increase in runway speed caused by post-trial morphine in this experiment has a peripheral locus of effect, which is probably distinct from the central effect that supports morphine self-administration and conditioned place preference.

Intervention studies aimed at promoting increased physical activity have been trialled in many different settings including primary care, worksites and the community. Churches are also potential settings for physical activity promotion. However, little is known about the effectiveness of this setting for promoting physical activity, particularly in Australia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mind, body and spiritually based health promotion program in increasing physical activity and promoting mental and spiritual health. Nineteen women completed the 8-week intervention, and 30 women in a non-health related 8-week program at the same church comprised a comparison group. Pre- and post-program surveys assessed outcome measures. Between-group differences over time were examined using one-way MANOVA's. Physical activity was higher in the intervention group than the comparison group. In contrast to the comparison group, both mental health (depression symptoms) and spiritual health improved significantly more among intervention participants. The data highlight the potential for a church-based setting and holistic approach to health promotion as a successful means of increasing physical activity and promoting mental and spiritual health among Australian women. 相似文献

Systemic anticancer therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is limited by intrinsic drug resistance and accompanying liver
dysfunction. However, recent advances in molecular targeted therapy (MTT) have shed light on the treatment of advanced HCC.
A recent randomized, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that sorafenib, a multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor, prolonged
overall survival and time-to-progression in patients with advanced HCC. This breakthrough highlights the potential of MTT
targeting hepatocarcinogenic pathways, such as the Raf/MAPK/ERK pathway, angiogenic pathways and the EGFR signaling pathway.
