Reduced-intensity unrelated cord blood transplantation for patients with advanced malignant lymphoma.

We report the results of reduced-intensity unrelated cord blood transplantation (RI-UCBT) in patients with advanced malignant lymphoma. Twenty patients (median age, 46.5 years; range, 27-66 years) underwent RI-UCBT with a preparative regimen consisting of fludarabine 125 mg/m2 , melphalan 80 mg/m 2 , and 4 Gy of total body irradiation. The median infused total cell dose was 2.75 x 10(7)/kg (range, 2.3-3.4 x 10(7)/kg). Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis was composed of cyclosporine or tacrolimus alone. Fifteen patients achieved primary neutrophil engraftment after a median of 20 days. Eight patients developed grade II to IV acute GVHD, and 2 developed chronic GVHD. Of the 16 patients with evaluable disease, 10 achieved a complete response. Primary disease recurred in 1 patient, and transplant-related mortality within 100 days occurred in 8 of 20 patients. The estimated 1-year probability of progression-free survival was 50%. These data suggest that RI-UCBT is a feasible option for patients with refractory lymphoma who lack an HLA-matched donor.     

Rapid development of renal lesions in diabetic DBA mice infected with the D-variant of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC-D).

Marked hyperglycaemia and renal lesions developed rapidly in DBA mice infected with 10 plaque-forming units of the D-variant of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC-D). Renal alterations were demonstrated in the glomeruli, tubular epithelium and small vessels 2 months after infection. Glomerular changes were characterized by mesangial thickening due to an increase of basement membrane-like material in the mesangial matrix. Nodular glomerular lesions were commonly observed 3 months after infection, whereas distinct thickening of the glomerular basement membrane was rarely seen. Besides these glomerular changes, glycogen inclusions in the distal tubular epithelium and medial degeneration in the arterioles were also noticed. The EMC-D-infected DBA mouse appears to be a useful experimental model for the study of human diabetic nephropathy.     

Encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus-induced orchitis in Syrian hamsters.

Testes of 8-week-old male Syrian hamsters which were inoculated intraperitoneally with 10(5) plaque-forming units of the D variant of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC-D) were examined virologically and histologically. Viral replication was detected from 1 day post inoculation (1 DPI), became more prominent 3 DPI, and was no longer demonstrated 7 DPI. The weight of testis decreased in course of time and it was about 2% of that of control 6 weeks post inoculation (6 WPI). Histopathologically, degeneration and/or necrosis of germinal cells and spermatogonia were observed in many seminiferous tubules of all hamsters 3 DPI. At 7 DPI, luminal obstruction by cellular debris and subsequent replacement of them by mesenchymal cells were common in mildly atrophic tubules surrounded with inflammatory cells. Thereafter, atrophy of seminiferous tubules became severer with the lapse of time and, in addition to plasma cell infiltration, apparent increase in the number of Leydig cells was found in the interstices. No regenerative signs of germinal epithelia were detected by 6 WPI. This is the first report of EMC virus-induced orchitis.     

Endomyometriosis arising in the uterosacral ligament: a case report including a literature review and immunohistochemical analysis

We report a case of endomyometriosis arising in the left uterosacral ligament of a 29-year-old woman. The central cavity of the uterine-like mass was lined by pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium and endometrial stroma. The wall of the cyst consisted of bundles of smooth muscle cells. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated both alpha-estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor immunoreactivities in the epithelial, stromal and smooth muscle cells. A relatively high proliferating activity was also demonstrated in these cells by Ki-67 immunostaining. These findings suggest that the mass was hormone dependent and had a relatively rapid evolution.     

Trends in studies of prosocial behavior

The present article provides an analysis of past trends and recent developments in studies of prosocial behavior which began in the latter half of the 1960s. Particular emphasis is placed on studies relating to the subsequent bystander effect, the development of decision-making models incorporating interactions of various factors, empathy, perspective-taking, and prosocial moral judgment as an important mediating factor in motivation, including the viewpoint of self-perception. The article concludes by considering the relevance of studies of prosocial behavior to psychology at large and the directions such studies might take in the future.     

Effects of suramin on metastatic ability,proliferation, and production of urokinase-type plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 2 in human renal cell carcinoma cell line SN12C-PM6

Effects of suramin, a polysulfonated naphthylurea compound, on metastatic ability, proliferation, and production of plasminogen activators and plasminogen activator inhibitors were studied using the highly metastatic human renal cell carcinoma cell line, SN12C-PM6. After renal subscapular implantation of tumor cells in nude mice, suramin significantly inhibited metastasis of tumor cells to the lungs and liver. In vitro growth of tumour cells was inhibited by suramin in a dose-dependent manner, at relatively low doses (ID₅₀ = 105 µg/ml). Plasminogen activator inhibitor type 2 (PAI-2) production by tumor cells was enhanced by suramin (100 µg/ml), whereas urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) production was suppressed. Thus, the increase in PAI-2 and the decrease in uPA production correlated with the inhibitory effects on tumour growth and metastasis by suramin. Therefore suramin may be beneficial for the treatment of patients with an early stage of renal cancer with potential risk of metastasis.     

Frequent importation of enterovirus 71 from surrounding countries into the local community of Yamagata, Japan, between 1998 and 2003

Phylogenetic analysis of 45 enterovirus 71 (EV71) isolates for 6 years in Yamagata, Japan, clarified that the annual outbreak of hand-foot-and-mouth disease was due to four genetically distinct subgenogroups, including a novel "B5." Our results suggest that the importation of EV71 from surrounding countries has had a major epidemiological impact on the local community used in our study.
