Studies on Ectopic ACTH-Producing Tumors: III. An Ectopic Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone: Gel Chromatographic Finding and Time-Lapse Color Change of Frog Skin

On isolation of the main melanocyte-stimulating factor fromthe metastatic liver tumor of islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas,it was found to be a peptide resembling human ß-MSHin the time-lapse skin darkening response of Xenopus frogs,but different in the volume of elution on Sephadex gel chromatography.     

Daytime sleepiness and automobile accidents in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Abstract We evaluated the rate of automobile accidents and daytime sleepiness using the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) in 44 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We defined the automobile accident score as a sum of two points for every one automobile accident and one point for every near-miss accident. Automobile accidents and near-misses were found in 54.5% and 50.0% in patients with OSAS. Automobile accident score was significantly correlated with the ESS score ( r = 0.56, P < 0.01). Our findings suggest that ESS score may be useful in detecting patients with the potential risk of automobile accidents associated with daytime sleepiness.     

板栗总苞中的抗糖尿病活性成分

目的分离鉴定板栗(Castanea mollissima Blume)总苞中抗糖尿病活性化合物。方法采用正-反相硅胶柱色谱和制备型HPLC进行分离,经理化常数测定、核磁共振技术分析等方法鉴定化合物的结构;对分离得到的单体化合物进行醛糖还原酶(aldose reductase,AR)抑制活性实验。结果从活性部位中分离得到9个化合物,分别为山柰酚(kaempferol,1)、没食子酸(gallic acid,2)、3,4-二羟基苯甲酸(3,4-dihydroxy-benzoic acid,3)、鞣花酸(ellagic acid,4)、苯甲基-6-O-β-D-吡喃葡萄糖苷(benzyl-O-β-D-glucopyranoside,5)、没食子酸正丁酯(n-butyl gallate,6)、2,4,6-三羟基苯甲酸(2,4,6-trihydroxy-benzoic acid,7)、没食子酸甲酯(methyl-gallate,8)、豆甾烷-4-烯-3,6-二酮(stig-mast-4-en-3,6-dione,9)。结论化合物5-7为首次从该属植物中分离得到,活性结果显示9个化合物均显示不同程度抑制活性,其中化合物4、5最为显著。     

Low levels of apoptosis and proliferative activity in colorectal villous tumors: Comparison with tubular tumors

In order to clarlfy the cell kinetics of colorectal villous tumors (VT), 21 villous adenomatous areas and 12 carcinomatous areas within villous adenomas were investigated for proliferative activity and apoptosis and compared with a series of 41 tubular tumors (TT), demonstrating elements of intramucosal carcinomas as well as tubular adenomas (so-called carcinoma in tubular adenoma). Proliferation was estimated in terms of KI-67 labeling indices and mitotic indices, and apoptosis was assessed by DNA nick-end labeling to give apoptotic Indices. Apoptotic indices of villous adenomatous and carcinomatous regions were significantly lower than the values for their tubular counterparts. Kl-67 labeling indices were also significantly lower for adenoma components. Apoptotic indices, Ki-67 labeling indices and mitotic Indices increased with atypia raised in tubular adenoma components. Correlations of mitotic indices with apoptotic indices, Ki-67 labeling Indices with apoptotic indices and mitotic Indices with Ki-67 labeling indices were found for each villous tumor group and tubular tumor group, and the apoptosis and proliferation ratios for villous tumors were relatively low, suggesting a tendency for greater growth due to less cell deletion. Although this is only one of the biological features of villous tumor groups, it might play a major role in generation of malignancy.
