BACKGROUND: Serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several psychiatric disorders including major depression (MD). Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of serotonin (5-HT), and might be related to the pathogenesis of MD. Two isoforms are known, TPH-1 and TPH-2. Their association with MD is still debated. METHODS: A case-control design was used for candidate gene-disease association in 194 patients with stress-induced MD, and 246 healthy controls, all North European Caucasians. Five TPH-2 polymorphisms were analyzed in terms of genotype, allele, and haplotype-based associations. RESULTS: Neither single marker nor haplotype-based analyses showed significant associations between TPH-2 and MD. LIMITATIONS: The interpretations are limited by the restricted population size. CONCLUSIONS: There was no association between TPH-2 gene variants and MD in the same population that had shown a strong association with TPH-1. Hence, the results suggest that in this particular group of stress-induced depression patients TPH-1 appears to be more relevant to MD pathogenesis than TPH-2.  相似文献

Background and ObjectivesImmunocompromised patients are a high-risk group for developing mycobacterial infections with either pulmonary and/or extrapulmonary diseases. Low-cost/density DNA-microarray is considered an easy and efficient method for the detection of typical and atypical mycobacterial species.Materials and MethodsThirty immunocompromised patients were recruited to provide their clinical specimens (sputum, serum, urine, and lymph node aspirates). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA-microarray techniques were performed and compared to the conventional methods of Ziehl-Neelsen staining and Lowenstein Jensen culturing.ResultsMycobacterium tuberculosis complex was detected in all 30 clinical specimens (100% sensitivity) by real-time PCR and DNA-microarray. Additionally, coinfection with 4 atypical species belonging to nontuberculous mycobacteria was identified in 7 sputum specimens. These atypical mycobacterial species were identified as M. kansasii 10% (n = 3), M. avium complex 6.6% (n = 2), M. gordanae 3.3% (n = 1), and M. peregrinum 3.3% (n = 1).ConclusionThis study documents the presence of certain species of atypical mycobacteria among immunocompromised patients in Egypt.  相似文献

Coronavirus 2019 infection (COVID-19) has a broad spectrum of clinical complications, some unrecognized. Herein, a case of a diabetic patient with multiple episodes of hemoptysis 2 months following her recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection is reported. The initial computed tomography (CT scan) revealed the left lower lobe collapsed secondary to bronchial narrowing and obliteration. Bronchoscopy was performed, indicating necrotic endobronchial tissue, which was confirmed histopathologically as invasive mucormycosis. Bronchial necrosis due to mucormycosis is an unusual presentation of COVID-19-associated pulmonary mucormycosis. The accurate diagnosis could be challenging as it can resemble other pathologies such as malignancies. Therefore, it is crucial to identify this fatal complication in patients with prolonged COVID-19 and lung collapse.  相似文献

Background

There is limited knowledge regarding the association between oral health and mental health in terms of depressive symptoms and particularly anxiety symptoms. Therefore, our aim was to close this gap in knowledge.

Methods

Cross-sectional data were used from wave 5 of the pan-European Survey of Health Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (n = 62 358 observations). The Beck Anxiety Inventory was used to quantify anxiety symptoms and the Euro-D was used to measure depressive symptoms. Oral health was quantified based on the presence of missing natural teeth, the number of missing natural teeth and the extent of replaced teeth. It was adjusted for several covariates in regression analysis.

Results

Multiple linear regressions revealed that the presence of missing natural teeth was associated with higher anxiety symptoms (β = 0.11, P < 0.001) and higher depressive symptoms (β = 0.22, P < 0.001) among the total sample. Among individuals with at least one missing natural tooth, the number of missing natural teeth was positively associated with higher anxiety symptoms (β = 0.02, P < 0.001) and higher depressive symptoms (β = 0.02, P < 0.001) – and fully replaced teeth (compared to not at all replaced teeth) were associated with lower anxiety symptoms (β = −0.35, P < 0.001) and lower depressive symptoms (β = −0.36, P < 0.001).

Conclusion

Our study stresses the association between lower oral health and lower mental health among older adults in Europe. Future studies based on longitudinal data are required.  相似文献
