OBJECTIVE: To assess role of systolic hypertension during pregnancy in long-term mortality. METHOD: A total of 4,090 Finnish women who delivered in the period from 1954 to 1963 were followed up for an average of 44 years. Mortality data were obtained from the Finnish cause-of-death registry. Cox-proportional hazard models were used for analysis. RESULTS: Cardiovascular mortality was significantly higher among women with systolic hypertension in early or late pregnancy. Women with systolic hypertension in early pregnancy without proteinuria had a significantly increased risk for cardiovascular death. Primiparas with systolic hypertension and proteinuria had a higher risk for cardiovascular death. CONCLUSION: By considering women with systolic hypertension in pregnancy as being at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases, there may be an opportunity to prevent untimely mortality. 相似文献

The effects of fructose and glucose on the metabolic changes induced by ethanol and on the intensity of alcohol intoxication and hangover were studied in 109 healthy male volunteers. After 10 hours of fasting, the subjects were given 1.75 g of ethanol per kg body wt during 3 hours under controlled laboratory conditions. Fructose or glucose were adminstered either simultaneously with ethanol or 12 hours later during the hangover period. The intensity of alcohol intoxication and hangover were estimated 10 times during the experimental period of 20 hours using subjective and objective rating scales. Sequential determinations of blood ethanol, acetaldehyde, glucose, lactate, free fatty acids, triglycerides, ketone bodies and capillary blood acid-base balance were also made during the experiment. Under these experimental conditions neither fructose nor glucose had any significant effect on the intensity of alcohol intoxication and hangover. The sugars also had no significant effect on the rate of ethanol elimination or on the blood acetaldehyde concentration during the course of the experiment. Blood glucose concentration was decreased and blood lactate, free fatty acid and ketone body concentrations were increased during the hangover period in the subjects who had been given only ethanol. These subjects also had a marked metabolic acidosis during hangover. Glucose and fructose significantly inhibited the metabolic alterations induced by ethanol. In this respect fructose was more effective than glucose. The results indicate that both fructose and glucose effectively inhibit the metabolic disturbances induced by ethanol but they do not affect the symptoms or signs of alcohol intoxication and hangover. The results support the view that hangover is not directly related to the metabolic effects of ethanol or to its metabolic products. 相似文献

Adult guinea-pigs were treated with ethanol (2.5 g/kg, IP) or acetaldehyde (100 mg/kg, IP) and exposed to moderate cold (+4 degrees C) for 50 minutes. Controls were given 0.9% NaCl solution. The hypothalamic catecholamines norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) and also norepinephrine and epinephrine (E) in the serum were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with an electrochemical detector. Blood glucose, free fatty acids and glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscle were also measured. Acetaldehyde caused a similar drop in colon temperature as did ethanol, but neither could prevent cold-induced vasoconstriction in the ear lobe. Ethanol significantly reduced the concentration of NE in the hypothalamus compared to the controls. Acetaldehyde had a tendency to lower hypothalamic NE. There was no significant difference between drug-treated groups in NE concentration. Neither ethanol nor acetaldehyde had any effect on hypothalamic DA. In the ethanol group serum E and glucose were significantly elevated compared to the acetaldehyde group. Serum glucose was also higher compared to the controls, and the difference in serum E concentration near the level of significance. No significant differences were found between the groups in serum NE, FFA or skeletal muscle and liver glycogen concentration. The results point to a possible central effect of ethanol during a short-term moderate cold exposure. The effects of acetaldehyde on neuronal tissue remain speculative, but a possible effect on noradrenergic neurons cannot be ruled out. Although the hypothermic effect of acetaldehyde corresponded that of ethanol, further experiments are required to elucidate the role of acetaldehyde in ethanol-induced hypothermia. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the background of drug-taking among three different age groups (17, 15 and 14 years old) of schoolchildren in Helsinki. The method used was a questionnaire. 25% of all the schoolchildren had taken drugs, hashish being used most frequently. The social background of drug-takers and non-takers did not differ greatly. On the other hand, the emotional stability of the home was of importance. The drug-takers did worse at school, they were more extrovert, more impulsive and they had more friends. They were also more rebellious and more alienated. In neuroticism controversial results were found. The most important reason leading to drug-taking reported by the schoolchildren was curiosity. The microbial exposure associated with health complaints in moldy houses consists of a heterogeneous group of components, including both living and dead bacteria, fungi, and their metabolites and active compounds. However, little is known about the interactions between different microbes and their metabolites, although the cytotoxicity and inflammatory potential of certain individual microbes have been reported. In this study, we investigated the inflammatory responses of mouse RAW264.7 macrophages after exposure to six indoor air microbes (Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium spinulosum, Stachybotrys chartarum, Bacillus cereus, Mycobacterium terrae, and Pseudomonas fluorescens) alone and together with the actinomycete Streptomyces californicus. The production of nitric oxide, levels of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and cytotoxicity were measured. The coexposure to Sta. chartarum and Str. californicus caused a synergistic increase in the production of IL-6 but not other cytokines. In further experiments, the metabolites from Sta. chartarum or from closely related fungi (atranones B and E, satratoxin G, trichodermin, 7-alpha-hydroxytrichodermol, staplabin, and SMTP-7) and the known fungal toxins sterigmatocystin, citrinin, and ochratoxin A were each tested with Str. californicus. The testing revealed a synergistic response in TNF-alpha and IL-6 production after coexposure to Str. californicus with both trichodermin and 7-alpha-hydroxytrichodermol. Finally, the synergistic inflammatory response caused by Str. californicus and trichodermin together was studied by analyzing for the presence of nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-kappa-B) in nuclear extracts of the exposed cells. The exposure to Str. californicus induced the binding of NF-kappa-B proteins to the NF-kappa-B consensus sequence as well as to the natural NF-kappa-B site of the IL-6 promoter. Adding trichodermin to the exposure did not increase the DNA binding. 相似文献
