Isolation and characterization of colon cancer mucin from xenografts of LS174T cells

The structure of colonic mucin, which is thought to be important in several diseases, including ulcerative colitis and colon cancer, is poorly understood. Mucin was isolated from nude mouse xenografts of the LS174T colonic adenocarcinoma cell line by gel filtration and CsCl density gradient centrifugation. The isolated mucin had a high content of threonine, serine, and proline, with 28% of the total amino acids O-glycosylated. The carbohydrates present were fucose, sialic acid, galactose, N-acetyl-glucosamine, and N-acetyl-galactosamine in the ratio of 0.4:1.5:1.0:0.9:1.4. Rabbit antibodies were prepared that recognized primarily protein-dependent determinants. By DEAE-cellulose chromatography, the purified mucin was found to be heterogeneous, with three major components that had small differences in carbohydrate composition. LS174T was antigenically and chromatographically similar to mucins in colon cancer tissue specimens and in nonmalignant colonic mucosae.     

An evaluation of cefoxitin in the prevention of postoperative infections following orthopedic surgical procedures

An open, nonrandomized study of 25 patients was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of cefoxitin in the prevention of postoperative infection following orthopedic surgical procedures. Cefoxitin was administered in a 2 g dose preoperatively and continued postoperatively at a dose of 2 g every six hours for 72 hours. The mean peak serum level achieved ten minutes after the preoperative dose was 153.7 mcg/ml. The mean bone level in samples taken during the procedure was 10.14 mcg/ml. All patients were monitored postoperatively and at intervals of six weeks, four months and six months for signs of early or late morbidity. No signs of major morbidity were observed in the study group.     

Erectile impotence treated with an implantable, inflatable prosthesis. Five years of clinical experience.

Erectile impotence can now be treated with a device that mimics a natural erection. Between 1973 and 1977, we implanted an inflatable prosthesis in 245 men (235 with organic impotence and ten with psychogenic impotence). Of these, 234 are able to use the device to their satisfaction; no failures have occurred in the 152 cases treated in 1976 and 1977. The success of this treatment rests in part on the careful selection of patients by a team--a urologist, a sleep researcher, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist--each evaluating the patient independently. Our experience suggest that erectile impotence may be more common than generally believed and that impotence from organic causes may account for a greater percentage of cases than formerly thought.     

Unrecognized atypical tuberous sclerosis diagnosed with CT

Summary Past experience in this hospital has shown that the neuroradiological diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis is often made before the diagnosis is clinically suspected. We present a child in such a circumstance in whom axial and coronal CT demonstrated significant neoplastic progression of this disease. The presenting symptom was merely that of increased intracranial pressure.
