Visuospatial impairments in aged canines (Canis familiaris): the role of cognitive-behavioral flexibility

This study used a novel delayed nonmatching-to-position task to compare visuospatial learning and memory in young and aged beagle dogs (Canis familiaris). The task used 3, rather than 2, spatial locations, which markedly increased difficulty. There were striking age differences in acquisition. Most of the aged canines did not learn the task, and those that did showed impaired learning when compared with the young canines. The aged canines also showed reduced maximal working memory capacity compared with the young canines. Analysis of the response patterns of individual canines indicated that the deficits were related to the use of ineffective strategies and inflexibility in strategy modification.     

Tissue polypeptide antigen: significance and prospective use in the clinical laboratory

Sequential determination of tissue polypeptide antigen were carried out in patients with neoplastic diseases. Blood specimens were taken before surgery and one week, one month and every months after the operation. The values obtained were compared with those of a control group of blood donors and those of a control group of healthy persons. The values obtained in control groups suggest that alcohol could cause significant increase of tissue polypeptide antigen values.     

Giant true saphenous vein graft aneurysm causing cardiac compression: a rare cause of atrial flutter

A 67 year old man presented with new-onset atrial flutter. He had a history of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery on two occasions. Subsequent investigation revealed the presence of a large saphenous vein graft (SVG) aneurysm compressing the right heart. We postulate that the SVG aneurysm was the precipitating cause for the atrial flutter. This case is the first in the literature to document an atrial arrhythmia as the presenting feature of a SVG aneurysm.     

Atherogenesis and serum levels of apolipoprotein E]

Serum apolipoprotein (apo) E levels and their relationship with age were examined in different age groups of healthy individuals of both sexes in a Lithuanian population. The serum concentrations of apo E in patients after coronary bypass were measured and patients suffered from diabetes mellitus were also examined. The mean levels of apo E were found to be higher in healthy males than those in healthy females only in young age. Serum apo E levels were inversely associated with age (P < 0.05). Apo E levels were significantly higher in males over 45 years of age who suffered from coronary atherosclerosis and in males under 45 who had diabetes mellitus (types I and II) than those in healthy individuals (P < 0.05). There was an insignificant difference in apo E levels among healthy and diabetic females (P < 0.05). The findings demonstrated the association of increased apo E levels with atherogenesis.
