Clinical significance of quantitative studies of cell nucleus in lymphocytes of the cerebrospinal fluid in leukemia]

The nuclear content, area and perimeter of the nucleus of lymphocytes in the C.S.F. were determined quantitatively by means of image analysis technique. 26 cases of central nervous system lymphocytic leukemia (CNLL), and 8 suspected cases were studied, other 56 cases who did not have leukemic and neoplastic diseases and had normal C.S.F. lymphocytes were taken as a control. Our data showed that all the mean nuclear content (MNC), mean nuclear area (MNA), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP), and the maximum and minimum nuclear contents of the 2 groups of former patients were obviously higher than those of the contral (P less than 0.01). These results presented suggestion that the image analysis technique can be used for differentiating the leukemic lymphocyte from normal one especially in suspected cases, and thus the diagnosis of CNLL might be improved.     

Immigrants et tuberculose : données épidémiologiques récentes

Immigrants, and especially those recently arrived in host countries, are a high-risk group for tuberculosis. In 2006 in France, nearly half of the new cases of tuberculosis were reported in this group. The incidence rate among people born abroad was about seven times higher than that observed in people born in France (38.9/10⁵ vs 5.2/10⁵). The incidence was also the highest in districts with a high proportion of socioeconomically vulnerable population, such as Paris and greater Paris area. The characteristics of French born and non-French born cases differed. Patients born abroad were less likely to have pulmonary tuberculosis (68.2% vs 78.2; p < 0.001) and were more likely to live in institutions (such as migrant shelters) and to harbor multiresistant tuberculosis strains. A national tuberculosis control program was launched in France in 2007, to decrease the prevalence of tuberculosis in targeted populations.     

骨巨细胞瘤的MRI诊断价值

目的探讨骨巨细胞瘤的MRI表现特点及其病理基础。资料与方法搜集经手术病理证实的12例骨巨细胞瘤患者资料，分析其MRI征象并与病理结果对照。结果T1WI上肿瘤实体表现为低、等信号，T2WI上为不均匀高信号，Gd-DTPA增强扫描呈中度到明显强化。此外，MRI还可显示肿瘤内坏死、出血、含铁血黄素沉着等。结论MRI能够提供比较全面的影像学信息，可提高对骨巨细胞瘤诊断的准确性。     

Monocrotaline-induced structural remodeling of the intra-acinar pulmonary arteries and pulmonary hypertension

Summary The monocrofaline-induced structural changes of small pulmonary arteries in rat and their relationship with pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy were observed by determining the right ventricular systolic pressure, and by light and electron microscope and morphometry. One to 38 days after last injection of monocrotaline (MCT), a medial thickening and lumen marrrowing of the circular muscular arteries (CMA), accompanying terminal (TB) and respiratory bronchioles (RB), were found. And there after the lumen of CMA, accompanying TB, became dilated, and its medial thickness (MT) decreased, whereas the histopathologic changes of the partially muscular arteries (PMA), accompanying RB, became severe, their MT increased continuously, and finally reached the peak value on Day 50. At the first day after last MCT treatment, inflammation and muscularization were found in PMA and nonmuscular arteries (NMA), and became more severe with the cause of disease. Therefore, the intra-acinar pulmonary arteries, both CMA and PMA, increased in number while the NMA decreased in number significantly because of the structural remodeling. Four days after MCT treatment, the right ventricular systolic pressure began to rise, and reached its peak value on Day 50. Eight days after MCT injection, right ventricular hypertrophy developed, and became most significant from Day 23 to Day 30. The results suggest that structural remodeling, i.e. muscularization, of intra-acinar pulmonary arteries plays an important role in the development of pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy.

In vivo and in vitro anti-tumour response of selenium-protein polysaccharide extracted from rich selenium Agaricus blazei

In this study, the anti-tumour activity of selenium-protein polysaccharide (SPP), a water extract of the rich selenium Agaricus blazei, was tested both in vivo and in vitro. The results of in vivo experiments show that SPP at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg inhibits proliferation of implanted Sarcoma 180 by 22 and 37.69%, respectively, and promotes lymphocyte transformation and natural killer (NK) cells activity in tumour bearing mice. During the in vitro experiment, we treated the tumour and non-tumour bearing mice with SPP, and prepared serum treated with SPP (Serum_SPP). The results show that Serum_SPP, whether from tumour or non-tumour bearing mice, significantly inhibits K562 cells proliferation and induces their apoptosis, and also significantly increases caspase-3 activity of K562 cells. However, the difference in anti-tumour activity of Serum_SPP between tumour and non-tumour bearing mice is significantly different (p<0.01). The results, according to the studies both in vivo and in vitro, imply that SPP extracted from rich selenium A. blazei can inhibit growth of implanted Sarcoma 180 and promote lymphocyte transformation and NK cells activity in vivo. Additionally, Serum_SPP can inhibit proliferation and cause apoptotic morphological changes and the fragmentation of internucleosomal DNA, and increase caspase-3 activity of K562 cells in vitro, which indicates that apoptosis of K562 cells induced by Serum_SPP may be related to up-regulation of caspase-3.     

Fibrinogen, factor VII, antithrombin III, cholesterol and triglycerides in young men with myocardial infarction and in their sons

The concentrations of fibrinogen (Fb) and the activities of factor VII (F VIIC) and antithrombin III (AT III) both in men less than 55 years old with a history of myocardial infarction (MI) and with normolipemia (MI-NLP) or hyperlipoproteinemia (MI-HLP) and in their sons have been measured. A significantly higher levels of Fb were found in both MI groups. Significantly higher levels of F VIIC and AT III were found only in the MI-NLP group. No lipid or haemostatic disorders were noted in sons. Furthermore, a positive correlation between the level of F VIIC and triglycerides (TG) or total cholesterol (TCh) in the patients and sons was revealed. A positive correlation was found between: (a) Fb levels in MI-HLP patients and in their sons; (b) TG levels in MI-HLP patients and in their sons; and (c) AT III activity in MI patients and in their sons. Fibrinogen appears to be associated with ischemic heart disease more closely than factor VII, the latter being strongly linked with hypertriglyceridemia. Elevated activities of AT III may reflect the haemostatic response to the prothrombotic state in IHD on the one hand whereas they may contribute to the development of IHD on the other.     

A new sesquiterpene lactone from Elephantopus mollis

A methanolic extract of the whole plant of Elephantopus mollis was found to contain lupeol, lupeol acetate, epifriedelinol, molephantin, and 2-de-ethoxy-2-methoxyphantomolin, as well as a new sesquiterpene lactone determined to be 2-de-ethoxy-2-hydroxyphantomolin.
