Reversal of diabetes in BB rats by transplantation of encapsulated pancreatic islets

Prolonged survival of pancreatic islet allografts implanted in diabetic BB rats was achieved by encapsulation of individual islets in a protective biocompatible alginate-polylysine-alginate membrane without immunosuppression. Intraperitoneal transplantation of the encapsulated islets reversed the diabetic state of the recipients within 3 days and maintained normoglycemia for 190 days. Normal body weight and urine volume were maintained during this period, and no cataracts were detected in the transplant recipients. In contrast, control rats receiving transplants of unencapsulated islets experienced normoglycemia for less than 2 wk. These results demonstrated that microencapsulation can protect allografted islets from both graft rejection and autoimmune destruction without immunosuppression in an animal model that mimics human insulin-dependent diabetes.     

Fibreoptic bronchoscopy for tracheal and endobronchial intubation with a double-lumen tube

A 68-year-old patient was scheduled for a thoracotomy. A double-lumen endobronchial tube was requested by the surgeon to facilitate operating conditions. Initial attempts at intubation by conventional methods were unsuccessful. The proximal ends of a 37F double-lumen tube were then shortened and a 4-mm fibreoptic bronchoscope was passed through the bronchial lumen. The patient's larynx was easily visualized and the bronchoscope was passed into the trachea. The double lumen tube was then advanced over the bronchoscope and correctly positioned. Shortening a double-lumen tube allows the use of a fibreoptic bronchoscope to aid in tracheal intubation in a patient whose larynx is difficult to visualize by conventional methods.     

Polymères thiocarboxyliques, 5. Synthèse de poly(oxyéthylène)s à fonction dithioester terminale. Application au traitement de cellules d'électrophorèse

Poly(oxyethylene)s with dithioster end groups were obtained from mono- and dihydroxyl terminated commercial polymers by reaction with dimethyl chloroacetamide, subsequent thionation of the amide group, and usual conversion of the thioamides into the dithioesters 14, 15 and 20, 21 . The best results were obtained in the syntheses of the S-carboxymethyl dithioesters ( 15 and 21 ). The resulting reactive poly(oxyethylene)s were grafted upon silica tubes and electrophoresis cells, previously activated by aminopropylsilanization. These graftings result in lowering of the surface potential of the tubes and in suppression of the electro-osmosis flow in an electrophoresis cell tested with a TiO₂ standard sample.     

Weber-Christian syndrome and pancreatic involvement. Apropos of a case with review of the literature

The Weber-Christian syndrome associates generalized nodular inflammatory panniculitis with osteoarticular manifestations. Pathogenesis of this rare affection is still obscure but a pancreatic origin has been reported in the literature. A case is presented having the particular features of being revealed by a subacute episode of chronic pancreatitis, and by the intensity of radiologic bony manifestations.     

Disk hypodensity and disk herniation

The authors report the case of a patient with a herniated lumbar disk and bacterial meningitis. CT scan showed central disk hypodensity at the hernia level, whilst full cytological and bacteriological study of the disk following surgery revealed no evidence of spondylodiscitis. The problem was thus that of consequences of "degenerative" events related to the herniation. Central or peripheral disk hypodensity must in no case be considered as specific of discitis when there is a concomitant disk herniation.

The syntheses and free-radical polymerizations of methyl and carboxymethyl 4-vinyldithiobenzoates are described as well as various copolymers. Copolymerisation parameters were determined for the copolymerizations of the methyl dithioester with styrene and with methyl methacrylate.     

Analysis of the butyrylcholinesterase gene and nearby chromosome 3 markers in Alzheimer disease

The K-variant of butyrylcholinesterase (BCHE-K) recently has been reported to be associated with Alzheimer disease (AD) in carriers of the epsilon4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene. We have re- examined the frequency of the BCHE-K allele in a large data set of both sporadic and familial cases of AD disease, and we have also examined the segregation of three genetic markers on chromosome 3 near BCHE . Our data neither support an association of BCHE-K with sporadic or familial AD, nor do they suggest the existence of another gene nearby on chromosome 3 as a common cause of familial AD.
