An Integrated Vector Management (IVM) strategy was implemented from 1981 to 1985 in one part of Pondicherry, South India, for the control of the bancroftian filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus (the IVM area). The rest of the town (the comparison area) received the conventional larvicidal input. After 1985 both the areas were managed conventionally. The switch to conventional strategy resulted in an increase of vector density in both areas. The microfilaraemia prevalence in humans showed a general decline (P less than 0.05) from 1986 to 1989 only in the IVM area whereas its intensity did not change significantly in either area. While the age-specific rate of gain of infection was generally unchanged in the IVM area, an increase in all age classes was observed after 1985 in the comparison area, where the Annual Transmission Index was high during the previous years. In both areas the rate of loss of infection increased during 1986-9 compared to 1981-6. The results suggest that 3 years is too short a period to relate the changes in entomological parameters to those in the microfilaraemia status of the population. 相似文献

The placenta is a vital, multi-functional organ that acts as an interface between maternal and fetal circulation during pregnancy. Nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy alter placental development and function, leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as pre-eclampsia, infants with small for gestational age and low birthweight, preterm birth, stillbirths and maternal mortality. Maternal nutritional supplementation may help to mitigate the risks, but the evidence base is difficult to navigate. The primary purpose of this umbrella review is to map the evidence on the effects of maternal nutritional supplements and dietary interventions on pregnancy outcomes related to placental disorders and maternal mortality. A systematic search was performed on seven electronic databases, the PROSPERO register and references lists of identified papers. The results were screened in a three-stage process based on title, abstract and full-text by two independent reviewers. Randomized controlled trial meta-analyses on the efficacy of maternal nutritional supplements or dietary interventions were included. There were 91 meta-analyses included, covering 23 types of supplements and three types of dietary interventions. We found evidence that supports supplementary vitamin D and/or calcium, omega-3, multiple micronutrients, lipid-based nutrients, and balanced protein energy in reducing the risks of adverse maternal and fetal health outcomes. However, these findings are limited by poor quality of evidence. Nutrient combinations show promise and support a paradigm shift to maternal dietary balance, rather than single micronutrient deficiencies, to improve maternal and fetal health. A cDNA clone representing the mRNA coding sequence of the fusion glycoprotein (F) gene of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was constructed and inserted into the thymidine kinase gene of vaccinia virus (WR strain) under the control of a vaccinia virus promoter. The resulting recombinant vaccinia virus, vaccinia F, expressed the F1 and F2 cleavage products (48 and 20 kDa, respectively) of the F glycoprotein in cell culture. F1 and F2 were indistinguishable from their authentic RSV counterparts with respect to glycosylation, disulfide linkage, electrophoretic mobility, cell-surface expression, and antigenic specificity. Cotton rats infected intradermally with vaccinia F developed a high titer of serum F-specific antibodies, which neutralized infectivity of RSV. This neutralizing antibody response exceeded that induced by infection of the respiratory tract with RSV and was 6-fold higher than that induced by vaccinia G, a recombinant vaccinia virus that expressed the RSV G glycoprotein gene. Immunization with vaccinia F stimulated almost complete resistance to replication of RSV in the lower respiratory tract as well as significant resistance in the upper respiratory tract. We studied the chemoprevention property of hesperetin on H522 cells using MTT, an apoptosis assay, an analysis of cell cycle progression, and the mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptotic marker gene expression was determined using quantitative PCR. Hesperetin enhanced apoptotic cell death and mitochondrial membrane potential loss in H522 cells. Hesperetin up-regulated the levels of Fas, FADD, and caspase-8 expression and downregulted the levels of caspase-3 and caspase-9, p53, and Bax expression in H522 cells. This study shows that hesperetin induces apoptosis in H522 cells via a pathway independentof p53 and Bax but triggers the death-receptor Fas-initiated FADD/ caspase-8-dependent apoptotic pathway. 相似文献

Insecticides of botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative biocontrol techniques in the future. The leaf acetone,
ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Aegle marmelos (Linn.) Correa ex Roxb, Andrographis lineata Wallich ex Nees, and Cocculus hirsutus (L.) Diels were tested for oviposition-deterrent, ovicidal, and repellent activities against Anopheles subpictus Grassi (Diptera: Culicidae). The percentage of effective oviposition repellency of 92.60 , 93.04, 95.20, 88.26, 92.80, 94.01,
95.77, 96.93, and 92.54 at 500 ppm and the lowest repellency of 47.14, 58.00, 56.52, 64.93, 71.09, 66.42, 50.62, 57.62, and
65.73 at 31.25 ppm in acetone, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, and Cocculus hirsutus, respectively. The oviposition activity index (OAI) value of acetone, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, and Cocculus hirsutus at 500 ppm were −0.86, −0.87, −0.90, −0.78, −0.87, −0.86, −0.91, −0.94, and −0.86 respectively. The OAI values revealed that
the solvent plant extracts have deterrent effect, and they caused a remarkable negative response resulting in oviposition
of very few eggs. Mean percent hatchability of the ovicidal activity was observed 24 h after treatment. The percent hatchability
was inversely proportional to the concentration of extract and directly proportional to the eggs. Mortality of 100% with ethyl
acetate extract of Aegle marmelos, methanol extracts Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, and Cocculus hirsutus were exerted at 1,000 ppm. The maximum repellent activity was observed at 500 ppm in methanol extracts of Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, and ethyl acetate extract of Cocculus hirsutus, and the mean complete protection time ranged from 90 to 120 min with the different extracts tested. that the leaf extracts of Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, and Cocculus hirsutus have the potential to be used as an ideal ecofriendly approach for the control of the Anopheles subpictus. In recent years, use of environment friendly and biodegradable natural insecticides of plant origin have received renewed
attention as agents for vector control because they are rich in bioactive chemicals, active against a limited number of species
including specific target insects, and biodegradable. The present study was carried out to evaluate the adulticidal, repellent,
and larvicidal activity of crude hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of eight plants, viz. Aristolochia indica L., Cassia angustifolia Vahl, Diospyros melanoxylon Roxb., Dolichos biflorus L., Gymnema sylvestre (Retz) Schult, Justicia procumbens L., Mimosa pudica L., and Zingiber zerumbet L., were tested against adult and early fourth instar larvae of Culex gelidus Theobald and Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae). The effective adult mortality was observed in methanol extract of A. indica, ethyl acetate extract of D. biflorus, and ethyl acetate and hexane extract of Z. zerumbet against C. gelidus and C. quinquefasciatus (LD50 = 37.75, 78.56, 129.44, 86.13, 80.06, 112.42, 53.83, and 46.61; LD90 = 166.83, 379.14, 521.50, 289.83, 328.18, 455.72, 181.15, and 354.50 ppm, respectively). Complete protections for 150 min
were found in hexane and methanol extract of A. indica and Z. zerumbet at 1,000 ppm against mosquito bites. The highest larval mortality was found in the hexane extract of Z. zerumbet, ethyl acetate extract of D. biflorus, and methanol extracts of A. indica against C. gelidus (LC50 = 26.48, 33.02, and 12.47 ppm; LC90 = 127.73, 128.79, and 62.33 ppm) and against C. quinquefasciatus (LC50 = 69.18, 34.76, and 25.60 ppm; LC90 = 324.40, 172.78, and 105.52 ppm), respectively, after 24 h. Pseudomonas pseudomallei, a gram negative organism causing melioidosis, is found in tropical and subtropical regions. It may manifest as a pulmonary lesion, osteomyelitis, soft tissue abscesses, abscesses in various organs or in septicaemic form. Melioidosis of the parapharyngeal space has not been reported so far. A case of melioidosis of the parapharyngeal space which was successfully treated by drainage and prolonged antibiotic therapy is reported here. A checklist of mosquito species for Pondicherry, India, is presented based on collections made from November 1995 to September 1997. Mosquitoes of 64 species were found belonging to 23 subgenera and 14 genera, Aedeomyia, Aedes, Anopheles, Armigeres, Coquillettidia, Culex, Ficalbia, Malaya, Mansonia, Mimomyia, Ochlerotatus, Toxorhynchites, Uranotaenia, and Verrallina.
