Enhanced 3D PET OSEM reconstruction using inter-update Metz filtering

We present an enhancement of the OSEM (ordered set expectation maximization) algorithm for 3D PET reconstruction, which we call the inter-update Metz filtered OSEM (IMF-OSEM). The IMF-OSEM algorithm incorporates filtering action into the image updating process in order to improve the quality of the reconstruction. With this technique, the multiplicative correction image--ordinarily used to update image estimates in plain OSEM--is applied to a Metz-filtered version of the image estimate at certain intervals. In addition, we present a software implementation that employs several high-speed features to accelerate reconstruction. These features include, firstly, forward and back projection functions which make full use of symmetry as well as a fast incremental computation technique. Secondly, the software has the capability of running in parallel mode on several processors. The parallelization approach employed yields a significant speed-up, which is nearly independent of the amount of data. Together, these features lead to reasonable reconstruction times even when using large image arrays and non-axially compressed projection data. The performance of IMF-OSEM was tested on phantom data acquired on the GE Advance scanner. Our results demonstrate that an appropriate choice of Metz filter parameters can improve the contrast-noise balance of certain regions of interest relative to both plain and post-filtered OSEM, and to the GE commercial reprojection algorithm software.     

Polyhalide derivatives of poly[N-(2-aminoethyl)-acrylamido]triethylammonium resins as iodinating reagents

Poly[N-(2-aminoethyl)acrylamido]triethylammonium dichloroiodate, tetrachloroiodate and dibromoiodate resins have been developed as a new class of heterogeneous reagents. The use of the polyhalide derivatives for the selective iodination of aromatic amines and phenols is described. The influence of the various reaction parameters including nature of the solvent, effective molar concentration of the reagent and temperature were investigated to find out the optimum reaction conditions for achiveing selectivity for monoiodination.     

Use of cuprous ion and metallic copper as initiators of aqueous vinyl polymerization

Cuprous chloride and copper powder (in acid media) initiate the aqueous polymerization of certain vinyl monomers such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid and styrene but it fails in case of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, and acrylic acid under identical conditions. Catalyst exponent of this initiator (in acid aqueous media) with respect to methyl methacrylate is 0.38. Quantitative determination of end-groups by dye techniques of the polymers obtained shows that about 2 hydroxyl end-groups per chain are present under acidic conditions in presence of slight traces of oxygen but in rigorous absence of oxygen, very little OH end-groups are found incorporated. The mechanism of initiation under different experimental condition is discussed.

Bile-duct diameter at the porta hepatis and liver biopsies in Indian children with biliary atresia

Fibrous remnants from the porta hepatis and wedge biopsies of the liver were studied in 60 patients with biliary atresia. The patients were divided into three groups on the basis of bile duct diameter — I: no ducts; II: <50 m; III: >50 m. The liver damage was classified into three grades on the basis of ductular and parenchymal histopathologic changes and extent of inflammatory pathology. There was no correlation between severity of hepatic damage and duct diameter, although the levels of serum bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase varied in direct proportion to the degree of hepatic damage. There was an inverse relationship between age and duct diameter, but neither correlated with bile flow at surgery or in the postoperative period. The data suggest that Indian children with biliary atresia follow a different clinical course compared to those from Japan and Western countries. Correspondence to: V. Bhatnagar     

Gunshot wounds to the hand: management and economic impact

Low-velocity firearms represent the majority of civilian gunshot wounds to the hand, yet much of the literature is based on high-velocity injuries. The authors reviewed their treatment regimen for civilian gunshot wounds to the hand and offer a treatment algorithm that emphasizes early debridement and fracture stabilization. They also address the economic impact on society. The authors reviewed 121 fractures in 90 patients with gunshot wounds to the hand treated at an urban trauma center during the last 5 years. All patients were managed with irrigation and debridement, elevation, intravenous antibiotics, and early fracture stabilization. Sixty fractures were managed with rigid internal or external fixation: Kirshner wires (26%), miniplates (16%), and external fixation (8%). Fifty-six fractures were managed with closed reduction. Five fractures required amputation. There was one subsequent infection and two late amputations. The cost of hospitalization and operative care was more than $1.7 million. For gunshot wounds to the hand the authors advocate immediate irrigation and debridement, intravenous antibiotics, early fracture stabilization, and a low threshold for internal fixation. This regimen is supported by their low infection and complication rates.
