OBJECTIVES: To develop an immune-competent animal model for mucosally derived squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA). STUDY DESIGN: Fifteen Fischer 344 rats were inoculated with 1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 x 10(6) FAT7 cells in their flanks. The animals were observed for tumor growth and metastasis. RESULTS: All animals developed tumors that grew exponentially. Pulmonary metastases developed in all animals and 13% developed lymph node metastases. CONCLUSION: The FAT7 flank tumor in Fischer 344 rats is a new animal model that closely resembles the behavior of human mucosal head and neck cancer. SIGNIFICANCE: The existence of an immune-competent, mucosally derived, and reliable animal model of SCCA that somewhat resembles human head and neck SCCA gives the opportunity to perform immune-modulating experiments on head and neck cancer in these animals. The effect of dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) electrical stimulation on response properties of layers IV and V barrel cortical neurons was studied. To assess the receptive field characteristics of cortical neurons, responses of neurons were recorded following the displacement of principal and adjacent whiskers individually or in a condition test paradigm. Then neuronal responses to the displacement of whiskers were analyzed following DRN stimulation at 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 ms inter-stimulation intervals. Considering On responses, DRN stimulation suppressed the response magnitude of layer V neurons to principal whisker deflection, while it slightly increased that of layer IV neurons (not statistically significant). The response latency of layer IV neurons increased when DRN was stimulated 200 or 400 ms before principal whisker deflection, while the response latency of layer V was not changed. DRN stimulation had no effect on either magnitude or latency of neuronal response to the adjacent whisker deflections. We observed a decrease in the inhibitory effect of the adjacent whisker deflection on the magnitude of neuronal response to the principal whisker deflection in layer IV when DRN was stimulated 200 ms before the principal whisker deflection. Off responses did not show any significant effect of DRN stimulation. Our results suggest a modulating role for DRN in processing of the incoming information into barrel cortex. Our objectives were to assess sperm alteration and adipose tissue (AT) genes expression related to steroid metabolism subsequent to fatty acids consumption. Twenty‐nine mature male mice were divided into: fat diet (FD; n = 15) and the control group (n = 14). FD group was fed with low level of trans and saturated fatty acids source for 60 days. Sperm parameters, levels of hormones and the mRNA abundance of the target genes in AT were assessed. The sperm concentration, total and progressive motilities were lower in FD group compared to that of control (p < 0.01). Blood estradiol levels increased in FD (p < 0.001), whereas no significant difference was observed in testosterone. The mRNA levels of StAR, CYP11A1, CYP17A1, 17βHSD7 and 17βHSD12 in AT of FD were higher than those of the control (p < 0.05). In contrast, mRNA level of Cyp19a1 in FD was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that of control. 17βHSD12 and 17βHSD7 (as oestrogenic genes) increased, while 17βHSD5 and 17βHSD3 (as androgenic genes) remained unchanged, indicating that dietary trans/saturated fatty acids affect AT genes expression. Probably, sperm parameters were altered by increment of expression level of genes involved in oestrogenic metabolism rather than those engaged in androgenic metabolism after fatty acids consumption. 相似文献

Fabrication of nanofibrous biomaterials composed of natural and synthetic materials that incorporated with antibiotic and growth factors with controlled release manner is an attractive topic in wound healing. The purpose of this study was to prepare optimal composite of materials as biomimetic nanofibrous mats for application in wound healing. The mat was prepared of polycaprolactone (PCL) in the bottom, chitosan/poly ethylene oxide (Cs/PEO) in the middle, and PCL/collagen (PCL/Coll) in the top layer. A panel of standard characterization tests of nanofibrous mat was performed and its compatibilities in strength and integration were confirmed. Middle layer was loaded with epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and silver sulfadiazine (SSD) was incorporated in the bottom layer as an anti‐infection factor. Then, on the dorsum of rats, a 400‐mm2 wound was created and surrounded by a silicone ring to control the usual tissue contractions. Nanofibrous mats with or without growth factors were applied as wound dressings and at day 14, the healing process was evaluated. At day 14, the treated group by designed mat showed faster epithelialization and angiogenesis. Silicone ring in the test group was desirable in wound closure compared to the control group. Reformation of skin tissue was manifested in a shorter time. This composite nanofibrous mat could be introduced as a dynamic and effective candidate for wound dressing. 相似文献

Introduction
Thrombosis is frequently observed in Galen malformation, but propagation of thrombosis resulting in the disappearance of the aneurysmal malformation is a very rare clinical condition.Case report
A rare case of spontaneous regression and disappearance of the vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VoGAM) in a pediatric patient with repeated generalized seizure, increased head circumference, and congestive heart failure is recorded. The course of regression from infancy to 8 years of age has been depicted. Radiological studies initially demonstrated VoGAM complicated by an intra-cerebral hemorrhage and hydrocephalus, which later underwent spontaneous regression. Long-term clinical and radiological follow-up is presented.Discussion
Different conditions including hemodynamic alteration, compression of adjacent hematoma, and narrowing of related vascular structures have been described to cause thrombosis of VoGAM. The relevant literature to address possible mechanism is reviewed.9.

Introduction Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is one of the most common tumors to occur in kidney recipients, especially in the Middle East countries.
Limited data with adequate sample size exist about the development of KS in living kidney recipients.
Methods Therefore, we made a plan for a multicenter study, accounting for up to 36% (n = 7,939) of all kidney transplantation in Iran, to determine the incidence of KS after kidney transplantation between 1984
and 2007.
Results Fifty-five (0.69%) recipients who developed KS after kidney transplantation were retrospectively evaluated with a median follow-up
of 24 (1–180) months. KS occurred more often in older age when compared to patients without KS (49 ± 12 vs. 38 ± 15 years,
P = 0.000). KS was frequently found during the first 2 years after transplantation (72.7%). Skin involvement was universal.
Furthermore, overall mortality rate was 18%, and it was higher in patients with visceral involvement compared to those with
mucocutaneous lesions (P = 0.01). However, KS had no adverse affect on patient and graft survival rates compared to those without KS. Forty-four patients
with limited mucocutaneous disease and four with visceral disease responded to withdrawal or reduction of immunosuppression
with or without other treatment modalities. Renal function was preserved when immunosuppression was reduced instead of withdrawn
in patients with and without visceral involvement (P = 0.001 and 0.008, respectively).
Conclusion The high incidence of KS in this large population studied, as compared to that reported in other transplant patient groups,
suggests that genetic predisposition may play a pathogenetic role. 相似文献
