In this paper, we review the psychological burden of SARS-CoV-2 on children and how health care workers can play a role in mitigating its mental health impact during anesthetic procedures. We evaluate the societal changes that have affected children over 2 years of the pandemic and the subsequent soaring rates of anxiety and depression reported. Unfortunately, the perioperative setting is a stressful experience at baseline and the addition of COVID-19 has only exacerbated the situation. Anxiety and depression are often linked to maladaptive behavior post-surgery, including increased rates of emergence delirium. Providers can utilize techniques based on developmental milestones, Certified Child Life Specialists, parental presence during induction, and medications to reduce anxiety. As health care workers, we need to recognize and address these concerns as untreated mental health issues can leave long-term consequences for children. 相似文献

Respiratory and arterial baroreceptor reflex interactions were studied in six healthy young adults. Carotid baroreceptors were stimulated with two intensities of neck suction during early inspiration or expiration at 100 or 150% of each subject's normal tidal volume. Sinus node responses to moderate baroreflex stimuli were inhibited by inspiration, but responses to intense stimuli were not influenced by the phase of respiration. Supranormal tidal volume did not diminish responses to inspiratory baroreflex stimuli, but significantly reduced responses to expiratory stimuli. These results provide evidence for a central respiratory baroreceptor reflex interaction in man whose quality is dependent upon the level of afferent baroreceptor activity and the depth of inspiration. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the lived experience of women who have been diagnosed with idiopathic premature ovarian failure (POF). DESIGN: Phenomenology was used to achieve the purpose. Women were asked to share their experiences in living with premature ovarian failure during an approximately 1-hour interview. The interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for emergent themes. SETTING: Interviews were conducted in the participants' homes and in a conference room in a hospital. PARTICIPANTS: The six participants were drawn from a multicultural sample of women with idiopathic POF. RESULTS: The women in this study expressed anger at their health care providers for their perceived lack of quality care they had experienced and at the insurance industry for its lack of reimbursement for fertility interventions; they expressed depression and sadness at the prospective outcome of the diagnosis, mixed emotions regarding their significant others, and sadness and resignation about their menopausal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Health care providers who create an environment in which women and their significant others will feel supported in asking questions, be assured that their concerns are taken seriously, and be provided with the physical and emotional resources they need can help these women to continue to build and live their lives. 相似文献

This study utilized Pender's Health Promotion Model to investigate through canonical correlation analysis the role that select cognitive-perceptual factors (health self-determinism, learned helplessness, self-esteem, and perceived health) and modifying factors (age, race, marital status, education, and income) play in understanding participation of community-living older adult women (age > or = 65) in the health-promoting behaviors of health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, and stress management. These were measured by the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II in a convenience sample of 107 community-living older adult women (mean age 76.7 years). Gender-specific benefits and barriers to participating in health-promoting behaviors were also explored using open-ended questions. Two significant canonical variates were demonstrated. These indicated that age, marital status, race, education, and self-esteem and the two health-related factors of perceived health and health self-determinism made statistically significant contributions to the health-promoting behaviors of physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, and interpersonal relations. Benefits identified included better psychological well-being, coping with the general issues of aging, social interaction, improved function, and management of existing health problems. Internal barriers focused on perceived physical difficulties with all types of health-promoting behaviors; external barriers included aspects of the activity itself, lack of support from others and structural barriers. Study results suggest that older adult women (age > or = 65) participate in health-promoting behaviors for both health enhancement and health management reasons and that barriers may be a more important determinant of older women's health-promoting lifestyle behaviors than previously described in the model. 相似文献

In this study I explore whether pregnancy status and mainland acculturation can be used to predict perceived social support or self-esteem in 49 nulligravida and 41 primigravida adolescents of Dominican background. Self-administered questionnaires containing the Dominican American version of the Acculturation Rating Scale (DARS), the Personal Resource Questionnaire-85 (PRQ85), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and a pregnancy-specific demographic sheet were completed in the participant's choice of Spanish or English. Neither perceived social support or self-esteem could be predicted from pregnancy status and mainland acculturation. However, mainland acculturation was found to be significantly higher among nulligravida adolescents, while no significant differences were found between the groups in relation to perceived social support or self-esteem. 相似文献
