Dummy- and finger-sucking habits in young Swedish and Norwegian children.

The prevalence of dummy- and finger-sucking habits in 3-yr-old children was registered in four different areas of Sweden and Norway. In Norway 245 children were examined and in Sweden 171 children. The Swedish children were more prone to develop a dummy-sucking habit as well as to prolong it. About 10-19% of the children in the different groups become finger-suckers. Very few of these finger-suckers had stopped sucking at 3 yr of age. The highest rate of non-suckers was found among the children from Karasjok/Kautokeino in northern Norway, who were mainly of Lappish origin.     

High levels of Lp(a) lipoprotein in a family ith cases of severe pre-eclampsia

We report a family with two cases of severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia in which very high levels of Lp(a) lipoprotein were found. The serum level of Lp(a) lipoprotein is genetically determined and the Lp(a) apolipoprotein has a close homology to plasminogen. Very high levels of Lp(a) lipoprotein might interfere with the fibrinolytic/thrombolytic process in man. A previous report suggested that a high maternal serum Lp(a) lipoprotein level can cause fetal growth retardation, and it is proposed that very high levels might lead to increased deposition of fibrin in the uterine spiral arteries in pregnancy, which is central in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. If confirmed, a very high Lp(a) lipoprotein level could be one risk factor for pre-eclampsia that is genetically determined.     

Oral Disodium Cromoglycate Treatment of A topic Dermatitis

Fourteen adults and 10 children with active atopic dermatitis entered this double blind cross-over study of oral disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) (adults 200 mg qid, children 100 mg qid) compared with placebo. Oral DSCG and placebo were given for 6 weeks in random order. According to the investigators' assessments of eczema, significant differences between active and placebo were found after 6 weeks' treatment, DSCG being favoured (P less than 0.05). No differences were detected in the investigators' assessment of lichenization and overall disease. No significant differences between the two treatments were demonstrated in the patients' assessments. Results from food allergic patients were similar to those from non-food allergic patients. Two patients reported possible side effects of arthralgia and urticaria respectively. There were no treatment effects on serum IgE values or any other laboratory data.     

Genetic and environmental determinants for lipoprotein concentrations in blood

Path and segregation analyses have been performed on cholesterol and triglyceride contents of serum as well as on very low, low and high density lipoproteins in 78 Swedish nuclear families. The effect of environmental variables like alcohol and smoking on the concentrations of the different lipoproteins has been studied. Genetic heritability was 0.16-0.68 for the cholesterol fractions and 0-0.56 for the triglyceride fractions. No major gene was evident for any of the variables studied.     

Alpha fetoprotein levels in maternal serum and in amniotic fluid from early normal pregnancies

Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) was determined in serum from 241 women in the 8th to 43rd week of gestation by quantitative radioimmunoelectrophoresis, and in 103 amniotic fluid samples from the first half of pregnancy by rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Both serum and amniotic fluid samples were obtained from a larger material, but samples were included only from pregnant women whose infants were normal at birth. The 90% normal AFP range was calculated both for maternal serum and for amniotic fluid.
