Allergic rhinitis is one of the most commonly treated disorders seen in otolaryngology office settings. It is often difficult to distinguish the symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis from other causes of rhinitis. Many times these nasal symptoms can be effectively treated using nonspecific pharmacotherapeutic agents in conjunction with general information on ways to reduce exposure to allergens or irritants in the environment. When allergic rhinitis is suspected and a targeted treatment approach is needed, allergy testing can confirm the diagnosis and guide effective treatment for the condition. This paper discusses various methods for diagnosing inhalant allergies with a special focus on a newer approach to skin testing, known as modified quantitative testing or MQT. This paper also presents an overview of the immune response as it occurs in allergic rhinitis, along with a discussion of common inhalant allergens. Finally, this paper offers a general approach to allergy testing and patient preparation.  相似文献

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) research is limited by the lack of small-animal models. We have implanted B16 melanoma into mouse kidneys, which we subsequently operated upon and irradiated with beta rays from a 90Sr ophthalmic applicator. The IORT has effectively prolonged survival and produced some cures. The strategy should be applicable to other murine tumors and to other internal implantation sites.  相似文献

Recent years have witnessed increased antipsychotic treatment of children despite limited long‐term safety data in children. In this study, motor side effects associated with the use of antipsychotic drugs in children were examined in a sample of pediatric psychiatric patients. Child and adolescent psychiatric patients receiving antipsychotics (most were on atypicals) for 6 months or longer (n = 118) were compared with antipsychotic‐naïve patients (n = 80) with similar age, sex ratio, and diagnoses. Only 19% of patients on antipsychotics had ever experienced psychotic symptoms. Eleven children (9%) on antipsychotics exhibited dyskinesia, when compared with 0 in the naïve group (P = 0.003, Fisher's exact test). Nine of 62 African–American children (15%) on antipsychotics exhibited dyskinesia, when compared with only 4% (2 of 52) of European–American children (P = 0.003, Fisher's exact test). Children treated with antipsychotic drugs might experience a significant risk of dyskinesia even when treated only with atypical antipsychotics. Ethnicity might also be a risk factor for dyskinesia in children. Side‐effect profile of the atypical antipsychotic drugs in children may be much different than that in adults. © 2007 Movement Disorder Society  相似文献

The diagnosis of molar pregnancy is a continuing diagnostic problem for many practicing histopathologists who are required to examine specimens of products of conception, particularly since changes in gynecological management in recent years have resulted in uterine evacuation at earlier gestations. The aim of this review is to provide practical, up-to-date, diagnostically useful information regarding the histological diagnosis of molar disease in early pregnancy. Pathophysiological issues relevant to molar pregnancies, such as genetic abnormalities, will be briefly summarized, but nonhistopathological aspects of molar disease will not be covered in detail in this review.  相似文献

The application of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the study of human disease using small animals has steadily evolved over the past two decades and strongly established the fields of "small animal MR imaging" and "MR microscopy." An increasing number of neuroscience related investigations now implement MR microscopy in their experiments. Research areas of growth pertaining to MR microscopy studies are focused on (1). phenotyping of genetically engineered mice models of human neurological diseases and (2). rodent brain atlases. MR microscopy can be performed in vitro on tissue specimens, ex vivo on brain slice preparations and in vivo (typically on rodents). Like most new imaging technologies, MR microscopy is technologically demanding and requires broad expertise. Uniform guidelines or "standards" of a given MR microscopy experiment are non-existent. The main focus therefore of this review will be on biological applications of MR microscopy and the experimental requirements. We also take a critical look at the biological information that small animal (rodent) MR imaging has provided in neuroscience research.  相似文献

HLA Antigens in 16 Families with Xeroderma Pigmentosum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Xeroderma pigmentosum is an autosomal recessive disease. HLA-A and -B typing was performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes and platelets. Sixteen Tunisian families were typed with 37 patients and 108 relatives. Genetic transmission of the disease and of the HLA system seemed to be independent in this study. Comparison of HLA gene frequencies between (unrelated) parents of patients and a control population showed no difference, proving that there is no clear association in populations between deleterious XP genes and a particular HLA gene. However, an excess of identical HLA among pairs of diseased siblings would suggest that the disease is polymorphic and a form of the XP could be linked to HLA.  相似文献

Surface antigen negative hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was evaluated in Venezuela, by molecular characterization of blood samples positive for antibodies to core antigen (anti-HBc) and negative for surface antigen (HBsAg) in blood donors (residual infections). HBV DNA was found in 11/258 samples (4.3%), and was significantly associated with high levels of anti-HBc antibodies (>25 UI/ml, P < 0.05), while no correlation was found between the presence of HBV DNA and the levels of anti-HBs. Synonymous and non-synonymous mutations were found in the HBV surface region (but not vaccine escape mutants) and in the precore/core region (precore mutants in 2/7 samples and 33-45 bp deletions near the N-terminal core region in 4/19 samples). While HBV genotype F prevails among HBsAg positive samples from blood donors in Venezuela, residual infection isolates were mainly genotypes A and D. Phylogenetic analysis of viral surface and core region revealed discrepancies in genotype designation in 6/9 samples, suggesting the presence of mixed infection or recombination. In conclusion, HBV residual infection in Venezuela does not seem to be frequently observed in HBV genotype F. This type of infection is frequently associated with variants exhibiting mutations in the surface gene that might be affecting the correct recognition by commercial tests, with precore mutants and with core internal deletions. These variants do not seem to cause severe liver disease, and on the contrary, were found circulating at low viremia.  相似文献

The amplification of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA sequences in sera for molecular epidemiology of HBV is an important application of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with regard to HBV. To simplify the PCR for this purpose, the optimal concentrations of SDS and detergents for carrying out the proteinase K digestion and the amplification of DNA by Taq polymerase were evaluated. It was found that by using 1% deoxycholic acid as detergent for the proteinase K step and diluting the digest 10 times before carrying out the PCR, the phenol extraction of DNA became superfluous. The sensitivity of this procedure equalled that of PCR after phenol extraction on comparable amounts of serum. Four pairs of oligonucleotide primers were compared for amplification of HBV DNA sequences in 48 sera previously subtyped with respect to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and in eight sera with different genotypes of HBV, representing the subtypes of HBsAg P1 to P8, defined at an international meeting [Couroucé-Pauty et al.: "HBs Antigen Subtypes." Basel: Karger, 1976]. Two primer pairs, selected from conserved regions in the X and S genes of HBV, gave a positive PCR with sera harbouring all the eight different strains of HBV, resulting in DNA fragments consistent with the sizes deduced from genome sequence data. Two other primer pairs were selected in order to discriminate genotypes with regard to differences between d/y and w/r strains.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
