We review our studies on the role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-DNA adducts in breast cancer. Additionally we report on analyses of the reliability of the scoring procedures used with immunohistochemical assay for PAH-DNA adducts and of potential bias arising from the use of benign breast disease (BBD) controls. We conducted a case-control study utilizing two control groups: BBD controls who donated tissue and blood samples, and healthy controls who donated blood samples. In comparisons of tumor tissue from cases and benign tissue from BBD controls, increasing adduct levels were significantly associated with case-control status [odds ratio (OR) = 2.40, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-4.92], whereas in comparisons of nontumor tissue from cases and benign tissue from BBD controls the association was nonsignificant (OR = 1.97, 95% CI 0.94-4.17). We also show among cases, but not among BBD controls, that the GSTM1 null genotype is associated with increased adduct levels in breast tissue. Our reliability study found the scoring procedures used with the immunohistochemical assay to have high reliability, 0.93 in nontumor, 0.82 in tumor, and 0.74 in benign tissues. However, we found that the technician significantly contributed to the total variability of a series of data. Finally, we did not find a consistent bias to the null associated with the use of BBD controls; however, BBD controls may overestimate the prevalence of family history of breast cancer compared to that of healthy controls (18% vs.14%). ABSTRACT The study investigated the frequency, themes, and attributions for significant regrets in a random probability sample of 3,917 German and Dutch nationals between the ages of 40 and 85 years. It was found that 14% did not have any regrets in spontaneous memory, and that this increased with the age of the respondents. With respect to mentioned regrets, older people, women, and those living in the former East Germany were more likely to recall externally attributed events; younger participants, men, West Germans, and the Dutch recalled more internally attributed events. Largely, memories related to 4 major themes: (a) mistakes, behavior, and bad decisions in general; (b) hard times; (c) social relationships; and (d) missed educational opportunities. The importance of these themes, however, varied according to age, gender, and regional belonging. Differences in the kind of attribution and in the centrality of themes are discussed in terms of lifespan theory, death preparation, and cultural differences. 相似文献
Although maternal postpartum mental health has been extensively studied, rather little is known regarding the factors that may facilitate psychological growth following childbirth. The present study set forth to examine various pre-birth, birth, and post-birth correlates of overall psychological growth and growth domains in postpartum women, assessed within the first months following childbirth. A sample of 428 women completed self-report measures pertaining to psychological growth, mental health, maternal attachment, and childbirth characteristics. We found that the majority of women reported psychological growth following childbirth, with those experiencing stressors in childbirth reporting the highest levels of appreciation for life. In regression analyses, postpartum factors were significantly associated with overall growth and growth domains, taking into account other factors. The more the childbirth was perceived as central to the mothers’ identity and the better the maternal attachment was to the child, the higher levels of growth. Growth was also negatively related to endorsement of childbirth PTSD. Background factors, such as maternal age, education, and prior mental health, were associated with specific growth domains, although the association was small and there was no association with overall growth. Post-birth factors are important in ensuing psychological growth in the first months following birth. Attention to opportunities of growth following childbirth is warranted in clinical care, in particular following traumatic childbirth.
The distribution of cone photoreceptor subtypes (important for color vision and vision quality) varies widely in different carnivore species, but there have been limited studies on bear (ursid) cone distribution. A previous behavioral study suggests that American black bears (Ursus americanus) are dichromatic, indicating that they possess two cone subtypes, although the retinal distribution of cones is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the subtype and topography of cones in American black bear retinas to further predict the nature of their color vision and image resolution. We studied 10 eyes from seven individual legally hunted black bears in northeastern North Carolina. Cryosections and retinal wholemounts were labeled using antibodies targeting two cone opsin subtypes: long/medium (L/M) wavelength sensitive and short (S) wavelength sensitive. Cones in fluorescent microscopy images were counted and density maps were created for retinal wholemounts. The black bear retina contains both cone subtypes and L/M cones outnumber S cones by at least 3:1, a finding confirmed in retinal frozen sections. There are higher concentrations of S cones present than typically seen in other carnivores with some evidence for co-expression of L/M and S cones. A cone-dense area centralis is present dorsotemporal to the optic nerve, similar to other carnivores. These results confirm that American black bears are predicted to have a dichromatic vision with high acuity indicated by the presence of a dorsotemporally located area centralis. 相似文献
Bisphosphonates are bone antiresorptive agents traditionally used on a relatively large scale for treatment of bone metabolic diseases and on a smaller scale for bone metastasis treatment. A study on the effects of bisphosphonate treatment on healthy instead of diseased animals will give more insight into the basic mechanisms of bisphosphonates and their effects on different bone sites. We aimed to assess the effect of BP on the mouse knee and jaw joint. Three-month old female C57BL/6 mice were used (twenty-four and eighteen control and experimental group, respectively). At baseline and after treatment with zoledronic acid (ZA) for one, three or six months, we combined bone assessment via µCT and additional histology. Our results showed that, in the knee joint, ZA treatment increased TMD, bone volume, trabecular thickness but did not influence cortical thickness. In both control and ZA group, a higher trabecular TMD compared to cortical TMD was seen. Unseen in the knee joint, ZA treatment in the jaw joint resulted in bone-site specific changes in mineralization; a significant time-dependent higher TMD was evident in the subchondral bone compared to the most distal region of the condyle. MicroCT images revealed the presence of mineral in this region and histology showed that this region did not contain mature bone tissue but cartilage-like tissue. Our data indicate the possibility of site-specific negative side effects, i.e., disturbing normal mandibular development under the influence of bisphosphonate therapy. 相似文献
The feathers of tropical birds were one of the most significant symbols of economic, social, and sacred status in the pre-Columbian Americas. In the Andes, finely produced clothing and textiles containing multicolored feathers of tropical parrots materialized power, prestige, and distinction and were particularly prized by political and religious elites. Here we report 27 complete or partial remains of macaws and amazon parrots from five archaeological sites in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile to improve our understanding of their taxonomic identity, chronology, cultural context, and mechanisms of acquisition. We conducted a multiproxy archaeometric study that included zooarchaeological analysis, isotopic dietary reconstruction, accelerated mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating, and paleogenomic analysis. The results reveal that during the Late Intermediate Period (1100 to 1450 CE), Atacama oasis communities acquired scarlet macaws (Ara macao) and at least five additional translocated parrot species through vast exchange networks that extended more than 500 km toward the eastern Amazonian tropics. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes indicate that Atacama aviculturalists sustained these birds on diets rich in marine bird guano-fertilized maize-based foods. The captive rearing of these colorful, exotic, and charismatic birds served to unambiguously signal relational wealth in a context of emergent intercommunity competition.One of the most pervasive and unambiguous material symbols of prestige, wealth, and spiritual status in the pre-Columbian Americas were long, slender, and brightly colored feathers often worn in elaborated headdresses (1–4). Feather use and its representation in iconography is recurrently found as a marker of leadership and association with divinity from incipiently stratified communities to consolidated empires (5, 6). In the Andes, the colorful feathers of tropical parrots were often imported from the eastern Amazonian tropical forests by little-understood mechanisms of exchange and trade (7–9). Although many feathers were transported and maintained in special containers, some tropical birds might have been taken and moved across the Andes alive. The archaeological finding of actual tropical macaws and amazon parrots in specific ritual and funerary contexts provides a unique opportunity to explore the origin of these birds and the management strategies related to their procurement, handling in captivity, and ceremonial interment. Here we reconstructed some of these practices by conducting a multiproxy study involving direct accelerated mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, and paleogenomic sequencing of an assemblage of macaw and amazon parrot remains recovered from archaeological sites located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.The Atacama Desert provides remarkable conditions for the preservation of organic materials such as bone, tendons, muscles, skin, and feathers (10–12). The evidence associated with the preservation and use of tropical bird feathers in this region has been a topic of recurrent discussion regarding the nature of the social interaction between societies located on both sides of the Andes (8, 13). The Andes were not the only place where these birds and their feathers were widely circulated. Scarlet macaws (Ara macao) were transported and held captive for feathers to mark status and for ceremonial purposes by Ancestral Pueblo, Mimbres, Paquimé, and other pre-Hispanic societies across the arid southwestern US and northwestern Mexico (14–16). Moreover, recent technical advances in the study of the pre-Columbian avicultural practices open up a series of possibilities for improving our understanding about ancient social, economic, and religious practices in the Americas, as well as of animal husbandry, procurement strategies, feeding ecology, and biogeography of tropical bird species that are presently threatened (17–19). 相似文献
